BACKGROUND: Involving mental healthcare patients in nursing handover practices seems a promising method for increasing patient participation, empowerment, and shared decision-making but is hardly found in practice.
METHODS: An explorative review on bedside handovers in mental health care was conducted. Searched databases included CINHAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, and Embase. The search strategy yielded 3126 articles. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review.
RESULTS: Pre- and post-implementation perspectives were described, as well as strategies for implementation. After the implementation of bedside handover, nurses and patients experienced more time spent together and a greater sense of involvement with the care plans could be noticed.
CONCLUSIONS: Being involved in bedside handovers facilitates active participation and open dialogue between nurses and patients. This accelerates the opportunities for patients to take part in shared decision-making and feel recognised as experts in their illness experience. More research on possible differences in effectiveness across different patient diagnoses is recommended.
CONCLUSIONS: Involving patients in mental health care in handover practices seems a promising method but limited research has been done to explore the meaning it has to mental healthcare nurses and patients.

BACKGROUND: Mental health nurses work in potentially unpredictable, stressful and complex environments that can lead to burn-out and high staff turnover. Clinical supervision is a formal and professional agreement between two or more people that aims to strengthen individuals\' competencies and organisational strengths. Effective clinical supervision has been noted as a method of reducing workplace issues within mental health nursing, but there is not currently a synthesis of evidence in this area. The key objective of this scoping review is to identify, map and analyse the available evidence reporting on the impact of clinical supervision on workforce outcomes for mental health nurses.
METHODS: A scoping review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-Scoping Review Extension method will be conducted exploring clinical supervision for mental health nurses. A search for academic literature from Medline, CINAHL, Embase and PsycINFO will be combined with grey literature sourced through Google to identify potentially relevant studies. Studies identified by the search strategy will be managed using Covidence, and two authors will screen all identified articles. Reference lists of included studies will be handsearched to identify any potentially relevant studies missed by the search strategy.
METHODS: A summary tool including predefined categories (such as author, date published, workforce outcome measured) will be used to summarise the included studies in this scoping review. Additionally, a narrative synthesis approach will be used to report the outcomes of included studies and provide further analysis.
BACKGROUND: This scoping review protocol described research that will use secondary analysis of publicly available information, and therefore, does not require ethics approval. The findings of this research will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal and relevant conference presentations.

Nursing staff engage readily with patients and associates in mental health/forensic inpatient settings. These settings are known to have instances of workplace violence directed towards staff and such violence includes racism. Racism is a form of workplace violence that must be better understood and supported within this complex setting. Completing a systematic review to coalesce preexisting research and suggested interventions can be beneficial to supporting nurses. Systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. CINAHL, PsycInfo, Medline, British Nursing Database and Web of Science databases were searched. Reviewers screened the papers for inclusion (29 articles out of 7146 were selected for inclusion) and completed the quality appraisal using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Subsequently, data extraction was completed, and findings were summarised through narrative synthesis. The way racism was conceptualised impacted how data was collected, reported and interpreted; racism was silenced or exposed depending on how studies were undertaken. If exposed, evidence indicates racism is a problem but is not always acknowledged or acted upon. Some evidence determined racism led to negative work-related outcomes. The literature provided limited examples of interventions. These included changing education/orientation for staff, openly discussing racist events and better planning for patients among colleagues and management. Increasing diversity within the workforce requires more research exploring and addressing issues related to racism towards nurses. Narratives of racism being normalised and embedded in mental health/forensic settings need to be challenged.

Developing competency in the use of EHRs is essential for entry-level professional nurses. Although nursing education has been encouraged to integrate this technology into nursing curriculum, many students still graduate feeling unprepared in this area. As a result, nursing graduates lack the skills necessary to effectively use EHRs, which may have negative consequences for safe patient care. Use of academic EMRs provides students the opportunity to integrate informatics education, develop critical thinking, and incorporate problem-solving skills in the clinical area. An academic EMR was introduced to students in the second semester of a baccalaureate degree nursing program. Students completed documentation on one patient from the mental health clinical rotation. A retrospective chart review was conducted, using a rubric to determine charting efficacy. Data analysis indicated that students struggled with documentation of the mental health assessment, care plan development, and nursing notes. Student documentation was strongest in vital signs and basic information. Students need practice documenting on the critical aspects of nursing care. Utilization of an academic EMR for clinical charting provides an opportunity for students to practice documentation and develop necessary skills for clinical practice.

UNASSIGNED: Patient handover (handoff in America) is the transfer of information and accountability among nurses assigned to patient care. Introduction, Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (ISBAR) is currently the most popular framework for framing handovers. However, research shows that incomplete handovers and information transfers among healthcare providers and nurses exist and are responsible for adverse patient events.
UNASSIGNED: The current systematic review aims to view contemporary literature on handover, especially but not exclusively in psychiatric settings, and to extract current conditions from Electronic Patient Records (EPRs) using the ISBAR framework. A total of fifty-five scientific papers were selected to support the scoping review. Eligibility criteria included structured research to analyze outcomes, completed by reviewing policy papers and professional organization guidelines on I/SBAR handovers.
UNASSIGNED: Our systematic review shows that the application of ISBAR increases interprofessional communication skills and confidence and the quality of the transfer of clinical information about patients, resulting in increased patient safety and quality of care.
UNASSIGNED: Implementing the knowledge and application of structured patient handover will respond to current recommendations for service improvement and quality of care. Furthermore, nurses who use ISBAR also reported its benefits as they feel they can deliver what is required for patient care information in a structured, fast, and efficient way. A further increase in the efficacy of handovers is reported by using EPR.
