    Corneal calcification typically progresses slowly but can occasionally advance rapidly. This report details severe stromal calcification following repeat Descemet\'s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in a 75-year-old patient with diabetes, hypertension, and prior ocular surgeries, including cataract surgery, intraocular lens extraction with suturing, and trabeculectomy. Persistent epithelial defects after the surgery led to rapid central stromal calcification within four weeks, significantly reducing visual acuity. Management included switching from betamethasone sodium phosphate to fluorometholone, facilitating complete epithelial recovery within two months. However, persistent stromal opacity necessitated a subsequent penetrating keratoplasty. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry identified calcium phosphate as the primary component of the calcification. This case highlights the importance of vigilant monitoring and proactive management of epithelial defects to prevent rapid calcification following endothelial keratoplasty.

    To date, insufficient investigation has been carried out on the biocompatibility of synthetic bioactive bone substitute materials after traumatically induced bone fractures in clinical conditions. This study encompasses the safety, resorption, healing process, and complications of surgical treatment. Our current hypothesis posits that calcium phosphate-based bone substitutes could improve bone healing. In this retrospective case-control study, over 290 patients who underwent surgical treatment for acute fractures were examined. Bone defects were augmented with calcium phosphate-based bone substitute material (CP) in comparison to with empty defect treatment (ED) between 2011 and 2018. A novel scoring system for fracture healing was introduced to assess bone healing in up to six radiological follow-up examinations. Furthermore, demographic data, concomitant diseases, and complications were subjected to analysis. Data analysis disclosed significantly fewer postoperative complications in the CP group relative to the ED group (p < 0.001). The CP group revealed decreased risks of experiencing complications (p < 0.001), arthrosis (p = 0.01), and neurological diseases (p < 0.001). The fracture edge, the fracture gap, and the articular surface were definably enhanced. Osteosynthesis and general bone density demonstrated similarity (p > 0.05). Subgroup analysis focusing on patients aged 64 years and older revealed a diminished complication incidence within the CP group (p = 0.025). Notably, the application of CP bone substitute materials showed discernible benefits in geriatric patients, evident by decreased rates of pseudarthrosis (p = 0.059). Intermediate follow-up evaluations disclosed marked enhancements in fracture gap, edge, and articular surface conditions through the utilization of CP-based substitutes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, calcium phosphate-based bone substitute materials assert their clinical integrity by demonstrating safety in clinical applications. They substantiate an accelerated early osseous healing trajectory while concurrently decreasing the severity of complications within the bone substitute cohort. In vivo advantages were demonstrated for CP bone graft substitutes.

    This report documents the clinical and histological outcome of 3D-printed calcium phosphate blocks placed in two-stage procedures to successfully rehabilitate atrophic alveolar ridges. This approach yielded a functionally favorable result. Histological evaluations were performed after healing periods of 6 months and showed ongoing bone regeneration and sprouting capillaries.

    Background: Rebamipide ophthalmic suspension was launched in Japan in 2012 and is used for the treatment of dry eye. Case Presentation: We report two cases of orbital abscess, which resulted from dacryocystitis that occurred after administration of rebamipide ophthalmic suspension. Computed tomography images showed an eyeball deformity in one case and exophthalmos in the other. In both cases, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray examinations revealed lacrimal sac concretions, which contained calcium phosphate crystals that were surrounded by microorganisms. Lacrimal sac concretion removal from the lacrimal sacs during dacryocystorhinostomies was performed on both patients. Although the postoperative outcome was favorable in one case, vision was lost in the other case due to the development of retinal artery occlusion as a complication of the orbital abscess, despite lacrimal sac concretion removal and administration of antimicrobials. Conclusions: This is the first case report to highlight that rebamipide ophthalmic suspension can cause an orbital abscess via development of lacrimal sac concretion. Ophthalmologists should be aware that rebamipide ophthalmic suspension might induce the formation of concretion in the lacrimal sac.

    This review provides a summary of recent research on biomimetic and bioinspired strategies applied in the field of biomedical material engineering and focusing particularly on calcium phosphate-protein template constructs inspired by biomineralisation. A description of and discussion on the biomineralisation process is followed by a general summary of the application of the biomimetic and bioinspired strategies in the fields of biomedical material engineering and regenerative medicine. Particular attention is devoted to the description of individual peptides and proteins that serve as templates for the biomimetic mineralisation of calcium phosphate. Moreover, the review also presents a description of smart devices including delivery systems and constructs with specific functions. The paper concludes with a summary of and discussion on potential future developments in this field.

    Preorthodontic socket preservation after tooth extraction is intended to enhance favorable dentoalveolar ridge morphology and architecture, and facilitate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and extraction space closure. This 13-year-old skeletal Class II case presents a unique opportunity to evaluate and compare the OTM extraction space closure by means of a split-mouth analysis in a single patient. The comprehensive orthodontic-periodontal treatment included nonsimultaneous extraction of the bilateral periodontally compromised mandibular first molars and the eruption of bilateral impacted mandibular canines. While the right post-extraction space underwent a natural healing process, the left one was grafted using 4BONE BCH (hydroxyapatite β-tricalcium phosphate [HA-β-TCP], HA 60%, and β-TCP 40%). The 3-year multidisciplinary treatment approach resulted in Class I relationships on the right side and Class II on the left side, improved facial appearance, and dento-skeletal jaw relationships. However, a 3-mm residual alveolar space remained unclosed on the grafted left-site, along with an unerupted left third molar. This split-mouth comparative analysis of the orthodontic space closure demonstrated a significant clinical difference in the outcome. Preorthodontic placement of HA-β-TCP grafting material on the left segment, proved to be an obstacle for OTM extraction space closure, hindering the establishment of good occlusion.

    The causes of osteolytic lesions found in radiological examinations are not quite certain. Therefore, to determine the appropriate treatment method, various approaches and analyzes are required to find the real cause. Hyperparathyroidism is one of the diseases which forms osteolytic bone lesions so-called brown tumor. A 55-year-old woman who had painful osteolytic bone lesions in both hip joint areas was diagnosed as parathyroid carcinoma after serial work-up. She underwent parathyroidectomy and follow-up imaging showed a decrease in brown tumor size and bone consolidation in the subchondral bone destruction area. Proper evaluation of osteolytic bone lesions helps to avoid unnecessary operative treatments and the first choice for the treatment of osteolytic bone lesions caused by parathyroid carcinoma is parathyroidectomy.

    UNASSIGNED: Mucositis is a common side effect due to chemo and/radiation therapy. Caphosol has been a proven preventive strategy against mucositis in randomized clinical trials. However, its efficacy to treat active mucositis in patients treated for solid tumors with chemotherapy is unknown. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of Caphosol to treat mucositis by comparing the grade of mucositis before and after treatment and documenting the duration of treatment.
    UNASSIGNED: A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive adult patients at London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP) who developed chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis and were then treated with Caphosol. This study was approved by ethics committee at University of Western Ontario.
    UNASSIGNED: A total of 21 patients, two males (one with cancer esophagus and another with lung cancer) and 19 females (all with breast cancer), with a median age of 59 years were evaluated. Grade 3 mucositis was present in 4 patients who completely resolved with Caphosol in an average of 4 days of treatment, without needing any hospitalization. Fifteen patients with grade 2 mucositis reverted back to grade 0 by using Caphosol for an average of 3.5 days. One patient with no effect had grade 1 mucositis dating prior to treatment with chemotherapy and remained as such. Another patient with no initial improvement had oral candidiasis and once treated with Fluconozole and Caphosol had a complete resolution. No obvious side effects were reported by patients related to the use of Caphosol.
    UNASSIGNED: Our case series, for the first time, shows that Caphosol may be used as a potentially effective treatment in patients with solid tumor, who develop chemotherapy-induced mucositis.

    BACKGROUND: A clinical case of a tibia plateau fracture is presented which was treated with balloon osteoplasty and arthroscopy guidance. Balloon Tibioplasty has been shown to be a very useful method for the management of tibial plateau fractures. The use of calcium phosphate has been described in the literature for management and restoration of bone defects in tibial plateau fractures.
    METHODS: A 45-years-old Caucasian woman was presented after a fall from a ladder. The patient sustained a lateral tibia plateau fracture which was classified as Shatzker type III (AO 41-B2) with posterolateral depression of the joint surface. Surgical treatment was applied using a minimal approach which included percutaneous reduction of the fracture under arthroscopy and fluoroscopy guidance. The bone defect was filled with calcium phosphate via injection. The clinical outcome at the 6, 12 and 24 weeks was excellent with full-range of motion of the knee joint.
    CONCLUSIONS: Arthroscopy assisted balloon osteoplasty seems to be a safe and effective method for the treatment of depressed tibia plateau fractures. Further study is needed for the proper evidence based use and application of this method.

    The treatment of uncomplicated osteoma consists of an en bloc resection, or curettage, of the tumor, followed by cranioplasty. Here, we present a case report of a patient treated for a parietal osteoma, followed by a calcium phosphate cranioplasty, with early resorption after 3 months, which was presented by a sinking flap above the resection area. This case suggests that synthetic cranioplasty should be preferred, even in small skull-gap areas.
