    UNASSIGNED: Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Wuhan, considerable attention has been paid on its epidemiology and clinical characteristics in children patients. However, it is also crucial for clinicians to summarize and investigate the co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 in children.We retrospectively reviewed the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and imaging characteristics of COVID-19 patients in co-infection group (CI, n = 27) and single infection group (SI, n = 54). Samples were tested for multiple pathogens.A high incidence (27/81, 33%) of co-infection in children with COVID-19 was revealed. The most frequent co-infected pathogen was mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP, 20/81, 25%), followed by virus (6/81, 7%), and bacteria (4/81, 5%). No significant difference in clinical characteristics, laboratory examinations, or hospital stay was observed between the patients with co-infections and those with monomicrobial, only lower in white blood cell counts (CI: 5.54 ± 0.36 vs SI: 7.38 ± 0.37, P = .002), neutrophil counts (CI: 2.20 ± 0.20 vs SI: 2.92 ± 0.23, P = .024) and lymphocyte counts (CI: 2.72 ± 0.024 vs SI: 3.87 ± 0.28, P = .006). Compared with the patients with monomicrobial, chest imaging of those with co-infections showed consolidation in more cases (CI: 29.6% vs SI: 11.1%, P = .038) and duration of positive in nucleic acid was shorter (CI: 6.69 ± 0.82 vs SI: 9.69 ± 0.74, P = .015).Co-infection was relatively common in children with COVID-19, almost 1/3 had co-infection, most commonly caused by MP. Co-infection did not cause a significant exacerbation in clinical manifestations.

    We aimed to explore the role of TLR4 (rs4986790) polymorphism in the nasopharyngeal (NP) bacterial colonization and its consequent impact on the development of childhood asthma. A semi-quantitative culture of NP swabs was performed on 473 children at 2 months of age and on 213 children at 13 months of age. TLR4 polymorphism was analyzed for 396 children. Children were followed from birth to the age of 7.5 years and the final outcome was physician-diagnosed asthma. The associations between TLR4 genotype, bacterial colonization, and asthma were analyzed. Children with TLR4 AG or GG genotype were more often colonized with Moraxella catarrhalis at 2 months of age (p = 0.009) and Haemophilus influenzae at 13 months of age (p = 0.018). Children who were colonized with H. influenzae at 13 months of age had a significantly higher risk of later development of asthma (p = 0.004). M. catarrhalis or H. Influenzae colonization at 2 months of age or TLR4 genotype Asp299Gly were not associated with the development of childhood asthma. TLR4 Asp299Gly polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of colonization of M. catarrhalis and H. influenzae in children. The colonization with H. influenzae at 13 months of age was associated with a higher risk of later development of childhood asthma.

    UNASSIGNED: Previous investigations suggest the use of extract from the root of Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630) for the therapy of uncomplicated acute upper airway inflammations, due to its strong antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effect. We aimed to compare clinical efficacy, safety and bactericidal effect of EPs 7630 and amoxicillin monotherapy in treatment of patients with mild to moderate acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS).
    UNASSIGNED: Fifty ABRS patients were divided into two groups by randomization. Group 1 (n = 25) received EPs 7630 tablets, 3 × 20 mg/day per os for 10 days. Group 2 (n = 25) received amoxicillin tablets 3 × 500 mg/day per os, for 10 days. We assessed total symptom score (TSS), individual symptom scores for each symptom (nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, postnasal drip, facial pain/pressure, loss of the sense of smell), endoscopic findings, including total endoscopic score (TES) and individual endoscopic signs (mucosal edema, mucopurulent secretion), before and after treatment. Samples of discharge taken from the middle meatus of all patients were cultivated for bacteria before and after therapy.
    UNASSIGNED: Higher absolute improvement after treatment was found for TSS, nasal obstruction, facial pain/pressure, impaired sense of smell, TES, mucosal edema and mucopurulent secretion in EPs 7630 group compared to amoxicillin group (P < .001 for all parameters). However, there were no differences in absolute improvement of rhinorrhea score and postnasal drip score between groups (P = .248; P = .679, respectively). Fewer types of bacteria grew on culture from middle meatal samples in EPs 7630 group compared to amoxicillin group. There were no reported adverse events from patients from either group.
    UNASSIGNED: Our results demonstrated better clinical and antimicrobial efficacy of EPs 7630 than amoxicillin. EPs 7630 was shown as a potent agent and good alternative to antibiotic treatment of uncomplicated ABRS.

    OBJECTIVE: To study effects of the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) on the interspecies dynamics of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis in preschool children with respiratory tract infection.
    METHODS: Nasopharyngeal samples from children aged ≤6 years with upper respiratory tract infection (n = 14 473) in South Sweden were analysed during 14 consecutive years, 5 years before and 9 years after PCV introduction. The yearly prevalence was calculated, and multivariate count regressions between prevalence and estimated yearly proportions of vaccinated children were performed. Associations between pneumococcal serotypes and the other pathogens were assessed.
    RESULTS: When comparing the prevaccine period with the years after introduction, the prevalence of S. pneumoniae decreased by 65.2% (16.4 to 5.7 per 1000 individuals; p < 0.001), whereas M. catarrhalis and H. influenzae decreased by 52.1% (21.5 to 10.3 per 1000 individuals; p < 0.001) and 46.6% (13.6 to 7.3 per 1000 individuals; p < 0.001), respectively. In multivariate negative binomial regressions adjusted for yearly numbers of samples taken, S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis were significantly negatively associated with increasing vaccine coverage proportions (adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) = 0.17; p < 0.001 and aPR = 0.48; p < 0.001, respectively), whereas H. influenzae (aPR = 0.75; p = 0.17) was not. In addition, the proportion of cultures positive for S. pneumoniae as well as M. catarrhalis was significantly lower in the postvaccine period compared to the prevaccine period, while this was not the case for H. influenzae. A significant positive association between certain PCV serotypes and simultaneous growth with M. catarrhalis was observed.
    CONCLUSIONS: After introduction of PCV, the prevalence of M. catarrhalis in addition to S. pneumoniae in children with respiratory tract infection decreased; this was also the case after adjusting for reduced numbers of samples taken. This may partly be attributed to a positive association between PCV serotypes and M. catarrhalis.

    BACKGROUND: Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in beef cattle has major welfare and production implications. Effective vaccination against IBK would also reduce antibiotic use in beef production.
    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a conditionally licensed commercial IBK vaccine containing Moraxella bovoculi bacterin. Primary working hypothesis was that animals vaccinated with 2 doses of the commercial M. bovoculi vaccine would have a lower risk of disease.
    METHODS: Spring born calves at a university cow-calf herd. After excluding animals with ocular lesions, calves eligible for prevention assessment in 2017 and 2018 were 163 (81 vaccinated, 82 unvaccinated) and 207 (105 vaccinated, 102 unvaccinated). One hundred sixty two and two hundred and six calves completed the follow-up period in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
    METHODS: A randomized controlled trial. The trial design was a 2-arm parallel trial with a 1:1 allocation ratio.
    RESULTS: In both years, calves receiving the vaccine had more IBK. This effect was small. The pooled risk ratio was 1.30 (95% confidence interval 0.84-2.01). The pooled unadjusted difference in mean weight (kg) at weaning was -0.88 (95% confidence interval-7.2-5.43).
    CONCLUSIONS: We were unable to document that the M. bovoculi bacterin vaccine had a protective effect for the incidence of IBK in our single herd in a 2-year study.

    BACKGROUND: Moraxella catarrhalis is a common agent causing upper and lower respiratory tract infections, particularly of ventilated patients. The bacteria are transmitted between humans by direct and indirect contacts. However, reports of nosocomial outbreaks by this pathogen are scarce.
    OBJECTIVE: To analyse M. catarrhalis strains isolated during an outbreak in a medical rehabilitation centre to reveal their clonal relationship and to elucidate potential transmission routes.
    METHODS: Extensive environmental and medical staff sampling was performed. Phenotypic and genotypic analyses of 15 isolates were executed, including repetitive element palindromic polymerase chain reaction (repPCR) and whole-genome sequencing. Furthermore, an intensified hygiene regimen was installed.
    RESULTS: The clonal nature of nine patient isolates and a simultaneous presence of separate entities including a strain isolated from a physician during staff screening was confirmed. Although neither asymptomatic carriers among the staff persons nor outbreak strain-contaminated fomites were identified for a specific intervention, the outbreak ceased due to maximum general and specific hygiene precautions. Retrospective analysis showed the increasing prevalence of M. catarrhalis strains over a period of two years before the incidence. Since then and after returning to the regular hygiene regimen, only one patient with a phenotypically diverse M. catarrhalis isolate has been documented.
    CONCLUSIONS: The first M. catarrhalis outbreak involving nine patients of a neurological and trauma rehabilitation centre was reported. Potential transmission pathways were discussed. Comprehensive outbreak analyses insinuated the extension of routine laboratory storage time for defined species.

    BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis and treatment of cutaneous malodour in dogs have not been investigated previously. Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium spp. are associated with human axillary malodour.
    OBJECTIVE: Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium spp. are associated with cutaneous malodour in dogs, and treatment with a topical essential oil-based product will improve malodour and reduce the abundance of odour-causing bacteria.
    METHODS: Twenty seven bloodhound dogs from a south Texas boarding facility were enrolled in this study.
    METHODS: Skin swabs were taken from the axilla and dorsum of 27 dogs at initiation of the study. Mean malodour scores were used to assign dogs to control or malodour groups. The malodourous dogs were randomly assigned to a treatment or placebo group, received four weekly topical applications of the spot-on or placebo, and samples were recollected. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) were performed on all swabs.
    RESULTS: Psychrobacter and Pseudomonas spp. were significantly more abundant (P < 0.001, P = 0.006; respectively), and overall bacterial diversity was reduced (P = 0.0384) on the skin of malodourous dogs. Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium spp. were not associated with malodour. The topical essential oil-based product significantly (P = 0.0078) improved malodour in the treatment group and shifted their bacterial community structure.
    CONCLUSIONS: A novel association of bacterial genera with malodour in bloodhound dogs, identified by NGS, highlights future targets for odour control. The topical treatment significantly reduced malodour. The interaction between the topical treatment and cutaneous microbiota should be further investigated and may be useful in other dermatological conditions involving microbiota.

    We describe the clinicopathologic findings, relative prevalence, and pathogens associated with infectious keratoconjunctivitis in mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus) in Wyoming. Seventeen cases with ocular lesions were identified among 1,036 mule deer postmortem submissions (1.6%) in an ~16 y period. Sixteen cases were observed in winter and most were in male (15 cases) and juvenile (13 cases) deer. Blindness was the most commonly reported clinical sign (10 cases). A herpesvirus was detected only in the 4 cases of bilateral necrotizing bulbar conjunctivitis. Phylogenetic analysis of glycoprotein amino acid sequences consistently identified this virus as a novel alphaherpesvirus. In 2 of these herpesvirus-positive cases, Actinomyces sp. and Moraxella ovis were also identified. Trueperella pyogenes was identified in 4 cases of unilateral ulcerative keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and panophthalmitis. M. ovis was cultured from 3 cases of bilateral conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis. In the remaining cases, isolates included Moraxella bovis (1 case), Staphylococcus sp. and Streptococcus sp. (2), Flavobacterium sp. and Pseudomonas sp. (2), Escherichia coli and Enterobacter sp. (1), and bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (1). No pathogens were identified in 2 cases. The relative prevalence of keratoconjunctivitis in mule deer in Wyoming appears to be low, and this disease is most commonly associated with infection by a novel alphaherpesvirus, T. pyogenes, and M. ovis.

    Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important cause of infection and commonly colonizes the nasopharynx of young children, along with other potentially pathogenic bacteria. The objectives of this study were to estimate the carriage prevalence of S. pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Staphylococcus aureus in young children in Indonesia, and to examine interactions between these bacterial species. 302 healthy children aged 12-24 months were enrolled in community health centers in the Bandung, Central Lombok, and Padang regions. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected and stored according to World Health Organization recommendations, and bacterial species detected by qPCR. Pneumococcal serotyping was conducted by microarray and latex agglutination/Quellung. Overall carriage prevalence was 49.5% for S. pneumoniae, 27.5% for H. influenzae, 42.7% for M. catarrhalis, and 7.3% for S. aureus. Prevalence of M. catarrhalis and S. pneumoniae, as well as pneumococcal serotype distribution, varied by region. Positive associations were observed for S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis (OR 3.07 [95%CI 1.91-4.94]), and H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis (OR 2.34 [95%CI 1.40-3.91]), and a negative association was found between M. catarrhalis and S. aureus (OR 0.06 [95%CI 0.01-0.43]). Densities of S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and M. catarrhalis were positively correlated when two of these species were present. Prior to pneumococcal vaccine introduction, pneumococcal carriage prevalence and serotype distribution varies among children living in different regions of Indonesia. Positive associations in both carriage and density identified among S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and M. catarrhalis suggest a synergistic relationship among these species with potential clinical implications.

    BACKGROUND: Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is one of the most common ocular diseases in ruminants worldwide. In addition to keratitis and conjunctivitis, animals with IKC can develop uveitis, corneal ulcer, and in severe cases, blindness. The bacteria Moraxella spp. has been described as the primary causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) in cattle (Bos taurus), while Chlamydia spp. and Mycoplasma conjunctivae are considered the main causative agents of IKC in sheep (Ovis aries). Previous studies indicated cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) as the primary causative agent of IKC in semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). The aim of the study was to investigate the presence and prevalence of potential pathogens for IKC in reindeer, and compare the ocular microbiota of animals with IKC, with apparently healthy animals.
    RESULTS: Semi-domesticated reindeer (n = 341), with (n = 108) or without (n = 113) ocular clinical signs, or with no information on clinical status (n = 120), were sampled in Norway, Sweden and Finland in 2010-2014. Seroprevalence was 37.4% for alphaherpesvirus (95/254), 3.8% for gammaherpesvirus (8/211) and 7.1% for pestivirus (15/211) (ELISA). PCR analyses of conjunctival swab samples revealed a prevalence of 28.5% for CvHV2 (57/200), 11.9% for Chlamydiaceae (16/135) and 1.0% for M. conjunctivae (2/197). Bacteriological cultivation of 202 conjunctival swab samples revealed bacterial growth from 75.2% of the samples, with Moraxella spp. being isolated from 21.6% (11/51) of the animals with and 5.6% (5/84) without ocular clinical signs. A significant association (p < 0.001) existed between the presence of clinical signs of IKC and CvHV2 DNA in the affected eyes, an association that was not present for other microorganisms.
    CONCLUSIONS: These results support the hypothesis that CvHV2 is the primary agent of IKC in semi-domesticated reindeer in Fennoscandia, with Moraxella bovoculi being a secondary candidate, since it was isolated in two different outbreaks of IKC. Further studies should be carried out to better understand the infection biology and the pathogenesis of IKC in reindeer.
