    In its 30 years of existence, there are still many improvement possibilities in studies performing the life cycle assessment (LCA) of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Hence, this paper aims to start a guideline development for LCA of urban WWTPs based on the information available in the scientific literature on the topic. The authors used the ProKnow-C systematic review methodology for paper selection and 111 studies were analyzed. The most significant points that can be improved are caused by missing essential information (e.g. functional unity and input data). Other important methodological aspects are covered: allocation process, functional unit choice, sensitivity analysis, and important fluxes to be considered. Many opportunities within the LCA of WWTPs were identified, such as optimization of WWTP operational aspects and resource recovery. Furthermore, LCA should be combined with other methodologies such as big data, data envelopment analysis, life cycle cost assessment, and social life cycle assessment. To achieve this potential, it is clear that the scientific and technical community needs to converge on a new protocol to ensure that LCA application becomes more reliable and transparent.

    This paper provides the first detailed description of a Tetracapsuloides species, Tetracapsuloides vermiformis n. sp., with vermiform stages in the bryozoan host, Fredericella sultana, and its experimental transmission from F. sultana to Cyprinus carpio. The suitability of morphological, biological and 18S rDNA sequence data for discrimination between malacosporean species is reviewed and recommendations are given for future descriptions. Presently, malacosporean species cannot be differentiated morphologically due to their cryptic nature and the lack of differential characters of spores and spore-forming stages in both hosts. We examined biological, morphological and molecular characters for the present description and for revising malacosporean taxonomy in general. As a result, Buddenbrockia plumatellae was split into two species, with its sac-like stages being ascribed to Buddenbrockia bryozoides n. comb. In addition to ribosomal DNA sequences multiple biological features rather than morphological characters are considered essential tools to improve malacosporean taxonomy in the future according to our analysis of the limited traits presently available.

    BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a tropical disease caused by worms of the genus Schistosoma. It is endemic in the Caribbean Islands, the middle east, eastern Asia, South America, and Africa. In nonendemic areas, physicians should be aware of this condition in travelers returning from endemic areas and in immigrants. The main disease-causing species are Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni, and Schistosoma japonicum. Neuroschistosomiasis is an ectopic form of the disease that is mainly associated with S. japonicum infection. Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in S. mansoni infection is neglected and underestimated. Neuroschistosomiasis mansoni can be classified into cerebral, spinal, and encephalomyelitic forms in the course of an acute or chronic infection.
    RESULTS: We review the CNS involvement by S. mansoni infection with an emphasis on life cycle, epidemiology, pathophysiology and immunology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, current treatment guidelines, and prognosis.
    CONCLUSIONS: Although an underreported CNS infection, found mainly in underdeveloped countries, neuroschistosomiasis mansoni still causes significant incapacity and morbidity. Hence, neurologists should become familiar with this infection worldwide and include it in the differential diagnosis of CNS involvement in travelers returning from endemic areas and in immigrants.

    This paper summarizes what is known about the endocrine systems of mollusks and how they can be disrupted by exogenous substances. It then examines the various possibilities for using mollusk-based toxicity tests to detect and assess the environmental risks of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). It is concluded that there are no internationally standardized tests with mollusks available at present that are suitable for assessing the risks of long-term exposure to EDCs but that several published methods show potential. At the present state of knowledge, the most promising mollusk species for use in partial life cycle testing is probably the fresh- and brackish-water mesogastropod, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, which is known to be responsive to both direct and indirect androgens and to estrogens (and their mimics). Less experience of full life cycle testing exists with mollusks, but the freshwater pulmonate gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis at present offers the best possibility for a practical procedure. In both cases, there is a need for substantial test optimization and validation before these procedures could form the basis of international guidelines.

    Forensic entomology, the use of insects and other arthropods in forensic investigations, is becoming increasingly more important in such investigations. To ensure its optimal use by a diverse group of professionals including pathologists, entomologists and police officers, a common frame of guidelines and standards is essential. Therefore, the European Association for Forensic Entomology has developed a protocol document for best practice in forensic entomology, which includes an overview of equipment used for collection of entomological evidence and a detailed description of the methods applied. Together with the definitions of key terms and a short introduction to the most important methods for the estimation of the minimum postmortem interval, the present paper aims to encourage a high level of competency in the field of forensic entomology.

    Diapause and hibernation during periods of environmental adversity are essential features of the life cycle in many organisms, yet the molecular basis for these events differs among animals. We have identified an endogenous diapause/hibernation-specific peptide, from the leaf beetle Gastrophysa atrocyanea. This peptide provides antifungal activity, acts as a N-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channel blocker, and has a new consensus sequence with an unknown polypeptide encoded in the insect iridescent virus. These results indicate that the diapause-specific peptide may be utilized as a probe to analyze and compare functional and evolutional aspects of the life cycles of insects and iridoviruses.
