Cochlear implants (CI) are neural prostheses that can restore hearing in individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. Although CIs significantly improve quality of life, clinical outcomes are still highly variable. An important part of this variability is explained by the brain reorganization following cochlear implantation. Therefore, clinicians and researchers are seeking objective measurements to investigate post-implantation brain plasticity. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising technique because it is objective, non-invasive, and implant-compatible, but is nonetheless susceptible to massive artifacts generated by the prosthesis\'s electrical activity. CI artifacts can blur and distort brain responses; thus, it is crucial to develop reliable techniques to remove them from EEG recordings. Despite numerous artifact removal techniques used in previous studies, there is a paucity of documentation and consensus on the optimal EEG procedures to reduce these artifacts. Herein, and through a comprehensive review process, we provide a guideline for designing an EEG-CI experiment minimizing the effect of the artifact. We provide some technical guidance for recording an accurate neural response from CI users and discuss the current challenges in detecting and removing CI-induced artifacts from a recorded signal. The aim of this paper is also to provide recommendations to better appraise and report EEG-CI findings.

Auditory evoked fields (AEFs) are well suited for studies of auditory processing in patients. Their sources have been localized to Heschl\'s gyri and to the supratemporal auditory cortices. Auditory evoked fields are known to be modulated by peripheral and central lesions of auditory pathways and to reflect group-level pathophysiology of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. They are useful in lateralization of language processes for planning neurosurgery and for localization of language-related cortex. The recently developed artifact rejection and movement compensation methods will enhance and extend the use of AEFs in studies of clinical patients and pediatric groups. New pediatric magnetoencephalography systems will facilitate clinical AEF studies of developmental disorders. In addition to their established use in planning neurosurgery, AEF findings in several new clinical patient groups suffering, e.g., from developmental, neurodegenerative, or psychiatric disorders have been reported. Several recent investigations report the correlations with clinical symptoms and sensitivity and specificity profiles of AEFs in studies of these disorders; this development is mandatory in gaining wider clinical approval for the use of AEFs in clinical practice dealing with individual patients. Most promising future research lines of clinical applicability of AEFs focus on developmental and psychiatric disorders.

Cognitive impairment is a core symptom of schizophrenia (SCZ); however, its pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. The sensory gating (SG) deficits reflected by P50 inhibition are recurring in SCZ, and this inhibition may be related to the cognitive deficits seen in these individuals. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between P50 inhibition and cognitive dysfunction in SCZ, which has not been fully investigated up to this point.
A total of 270 individuals with chronic SCZ and 116 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Psychopathology of SCZ was rated by the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS), while cognitive function and P50 inhibition of subjects were assessed by the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) and the electroencephalography system.
The MCCB total and its 10 index scores were significantly lower in patients than those in healthy controls (all p < 0.001). SCZ patients had a lower amplitude of S1, and higher P50 ratio than healthy controls (both p < 0.01). However, there were no significant correlations between the P50 ratio and any of the PANSS total and its subscale scores in SCZ patients (all p > 0.05). Moreover, no correlation was found between the P50 components and the MCCB scores (all p > 0.05).
Our findings suggest that the P50 inhibition deficits occur in Chinese individuals with SCZ, which may not be associated with their clinical symptoms and cognitive impairment.

For a final diagnosis of brain death one needs particular proof that the brain has fully stopped functioning. In this respect, diagnostic tests need to be used to confirm the clinical findings. Since in different countries there are various national guidelines for the determination of brain death, the aim of this study is to point to the diagnostic value of electroencephalography (EEG) and evoked potentials (EP) in verifying brain death. The need is emphasized for the two methods to be used in combination, and, accordingly, for the current national guidelines to be changed in our country and also in other countries round the world.
