    BACKGROUND: Malignant fungating wounds (MFWs) occur among 5%-15% of patients with terminal cancers, the uncontrollable symptoms result in serious psychosocial issues, thereby reducing the quality of life. Caring for MFWs impacts caregivers, including healthcare personnel. While existing studies are patient-focused, the impact of care experiences and associated support for nurses has not been examined.
    OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences in caring for patients with MFWs among nurses in Taiwan.
    METHODS: Qualitative study with a phenomenological approach by thematic analysis was conducted with semi-structured interviews. About 15 nurses who cared for patients with MFWs at local district hospitals in Southern Taiwan.
    RESULTS: Four themes were identified to describe the phenomenon: (1) Fear of Unpredictability (2) Maintaining Professionalism (3) Feeling Helpless (4) Rationalizing the Negatives. The themes illustrated the distress of managing physical symptoms and highlighted how nurses strived to promote comfort for patients. Nurses felt helpless about the incurable nature of MFWs but found a way to suppress their feelings.
    CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggested the need for addressing the emotional well-being of nurses who take care of patients with MFWs. Future studies should identify effective coping strategies for nurses\' health when caring for this population.

    OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore nurses\' experiences of delivering spiritual care in an oncology setting.
    METHODS: An exploratory- descriptive qualitative design. Focus groups were conducted to gather data. The discussions were recorded and transcribed verbatim to ensure accuracy, credibility, and reliability. Inductive thematic analysis was performed to analyze the narratives, and the study\'s reporting followed the Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative studies.
    RESULTS: The study revealed four major themes: the spirituality from the perspective of oncology nurses, recognition of patients\' spiritual needs, delivery of spiritual care to patients with cancer, and barriers in implementing spiritual care. The participants identified insufficient staff, lack of time, and insufficient knowledge and skills as obstacles to delivering spiritual care.
    CONCLUSIONS: This study offers a thorough understanding of how nurses provide spiritual care in an oncology setting. It is recommended that organizational interventions, such as increasing staff numbers, be implemented to enable nurses to provide more compassionate care. Furthermore, nursing curriculums should incorporate purposeful engagement and focused debriefing related to spiritual care to better equip nurses in identifying and meeting the spiritual needs of their patients.

    Professionalism is a fundamental concept in nursing and a central aspect of nursing care. The review aimed to synthesize evidence presented in qualitative studies related to the perception of professionalism in nursing practice. Six main analytical themes were generated from primary studies included in the literature review: everyday practice, ethical aspects of nursing care, nurses\' identity, nurses\' professional growth, achieving autonomy, complexity of relationships. Presented themes are considered key elements of nursing professionalism, are closely interconnected, and support the multidimensional structure of professionalism in nursing. Nursing professionalism means providing high-quality care while upholding the values of integrity, accountability, and respect.

    Understanding a patient\'s culture is imperative to providing holistic patient care. The purpose of the study is to describe and explore the lived experiences of non-Muslim hospital-employed registered nurses providing care for Muslim patients in the United States.
    This study used a qualitative exploratory research design based on semi-structured interviews utilizing Husserlian phenomenology. A snowball technique was used to recruit the participants.
    Ten nurses who cared for hospitalized Muslim patients were interviewed and three major themes emerged from the participants\' narratives: Nurse-Patient Relationship, Nurses\' Knowledge and Western Health Care Systems, and Family Influence.
    Muslim patients have cultural expectations and differences that may not be anticipated by nurses, which affects nurses\' experiences when providing care. As the Muslim population continues to grow in the United States, there is a need for increased education on culturally congruent care to assure the highest quality of nursing care.

    BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of the pandemic, nurses have played a key role in providing care for COVID-19 patients. Infection risk and fear, use of personal protective equipment, and social isolation were related to high levels of stress and extreme psychological drain among front-line healthcare providers.
    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore how front-line nurses experienced psychological and professional burdens during the coronavirus outbreak.
    METHODS: The study used a qualitative research design. Semi-structured interviews were applied as the method of data collection. Ten nurses from COVID-19 wards and units of two general public hospitals participated in the study. A content analysis approach was employed to analyze the data.
    RESULTS: Data analysis revealed two main categories, namely: (A) front-line experience \"From fear to empowerment\", and (B) caring and management \"From powerlessness to adaptation\". Eight sub-categories were developed and included within the corresponding main categories. The study\'s findings demonstrated that the pandemic caused significant psychological and professional strain on front-line nurses, with feelings of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty predominating. Nonetheless, the process of adaptation and adjustment brought about sentiments of self-actualization and empowerment.
    CONCLUSIONS: A thorough understanding of the psychological and professional burden experienced by the front-line nurses is crucial to ensure that nurses receive appropriate support and that quality care is sustained under highly demanding healthcare conditions.

    During the COVID-19 outbreak, nurses employed in the clinical sector faced a number of difficulties associated with excessive workload, increased stress, and role ambiguity, which impacted nurses themselves and patient care. The aim of the present study was to investigate how Greek hospital nurses working in non-COVID units experienced the virus outbreak during the first wave of the pandemic. A descriptive qualitative research design was applied using a content analysis approach. To recruit the study participants a purposive sampling strategy was used. Ten nurses participated in the study. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews. Content analysis revealed three themes namely, (a) emotional burden, (b) professional commitment, and (c) abrupt changes. Six subthemes were formulated and assimilated under each main theme respectively. Organizational changes, emotional burdens and feelings of fear and uncertainty, appeared to have a crucial effect on nurses and patient care. However, the professional commitment and the nurses\' effort to provide excellent nursing care remained high. Nurses demonstrated that despite the burdens caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the pandemic era created opportunities for thoroughness and accuracy in nursing care.

    OBJECTIVE: To describe nurses\' perceptions about predisposing factors, nurses\' roles and effective strategies to combat workplace violence (WPV) in the emergency department (ED).
    BACKGROUND: Various forms of WPV against nurses is highly prevelent in EDs in Jordan and elsewhere. There is a dearth of information about predisposing factors for WPV and what strategies nurses use to counter this.
    METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used to describe nurses\' perceptions about their roles and effective strategies regarding WPV. A purposive sample of 24 nurses (12 male and 12 female) who were working in the ED at two Jordanian hospitals participated in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for each participant. The data were analysed using Colaizzi\'s narrative analysis steps and the Lincoln and Guba\'s framework to ensure credibility and trustworthiness.
    RESULTS: Three major themes emerged from the analysis of the data: (1) predisposing factors for WPV  in ED, (2) the roles adopted by nurses in WPV incidents and (3) beneficial strategies to counter WPV.
    CONCLUSIONS: Participant nurses provided insights into the predisposing factors of WPV in Jordanian EDs. A range of strategies and roles used by nurses to counter WPV in health institutions and community contexts were identified. However, the effective strategies used by nurses confronted by WPV did not emerge from having been trained or educated for such crises and therefore WPV remains underestimated and underreported.
    UNASSIGNED: Violence of all types is a crime and laws need to be not only strong but also appropriately enforced. Employers have a legal responsibility to provide a safe workplace for staff. Their organizational policies about workplace safety must reflect national laws as well as the human rights of people who come to work in their organizations. Workplace policies need to emphasise safety measures, professional training and education for assuring a safe hospital environment. It is crucial to conduct culturally competent programmes for preventing and countering WPV, taking into consideration the nurses\' Jordanian cultural backgrounds and context.

    OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of nurses working in emergency departments in selecting and triaging patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    METHODS: Descriptive phenomenology was applied in this study.
    METHODS: Data were collected from nurses working at hospitals in Indonesia using snowball sampling and telephone interviews. A total of 10 emergency nurses participated, and Colaizzi\'s method of data analysis was applied.
    RESULTS: Six themes and 10 subthemes emerged. The main themes were \"extreme challenges in triage,\" \"feeling of responsibility under uncontrolled spread and infection,\" \"physical and psychological exhaustion,\" \"discovering strategies under difficult circumstances,\" \"looking for positive reinforcement,\" and \"optimism in togetherness.\" Nurses had to deal with the challenge of COVID-19 in the ED triage, interestingly so, the nurses they have shown the development of professional responsibility. Nurses are also experienced in finding patient selection and triage strategies and the sense of optimism that may influence strategy and practice during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    CONCLUSIONS: This findings identify nurses\' experiences in dealing with the extreme challenges of emergency department triage as well as their associated strategies and optimism.
    CONCLUSIONS: Providing support to emergency nurses, improving emergency department triage, and community empowerment are suggested as strategies to improve nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Nurses are at the forefront of patient care during infectious disease pandemics and they play a key role in treating and preventing the upward trend of the disease. Hence, it is crucial to consider their experiences in designing action plans to combat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since there is not enough data in this regard, the current study aimed to investigate the nurses\' experiences in caring for patients with COVID-19 in Iran.
    In this descriptive qualitative study, a total of 20 nurses were selected by purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using qualitative content analysis to collect data.
    Data analysis revealed four main themes, including \'duality in the form of care,\' \'confusion and ambiguity in care planning\', \'workload\', and \'social isolation in spite of positive image.\'
    Our findings indicated that the nurses experienced a range of paradoxes during the COVID-19 pandemic; these paradoxes included distraction from providing care due to focus on marginal factors in spite of empathy and cooperation in nurses, the presence of volunteer support staff despite the lack of equipment, lack of scientific information and the unreliability of online information, overload in the hospital due to insufficient facilities and equipment, and the physical avoidance of people in the community in spite of social support for nurses in the media. The results of this study can lead to a clear understanding for managers and healthcare policymakers in the country and aid them in taking optimal measures to support nurses and improve the quality of nursing care against COVID-19.

    UNASSIGNED: To identify, examine, and map literature on the experiences of single-room hospital accommodation, exploring what is known about how single-room accommodation in hospitals is viewed by patients and nurses.
    UNASSIGNED: Worldwide, hospital design is changing to mainly single-room accommodation. However, there is little literature exploring patients\' and nurses\' experiences of single-room designs.
    UNASSIGNED: Scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidance on scoping reviews.
    UNASSIGNED: We conducted the search in medical databases for scientific and gray literature. The four authors independently used a data extraction tool to include sources from the searches. The sources were discussed during the process, and in case of a disagreement between two reviewers, the third and fourth reviewer would be invited to participate in the discussion until consensus was achieved.
    UNASSIGNED: We included 22 sources published during the period 2002-2020, with a majority (n = 16) during the period 2013-2020. The sources were distributed on 10 different countries; however, England dominated with 14 publications. We found three main maps for reporting on patients\' experiences: (1) personal control, (2) dignity, and (3) by myself. For the nurses\' experiences, we found four main maps: (1) the working environment, (2) changes of nursing practice, (3) privacy and dignity, and (4) patient safety.
    UNASSIGNED: We suggested that patients\' and nurses\' experiences are predominantly interdependent and that the implications of single-room accommodation is a large and complex issue which goes beyond hospital design.
