OBJECTIVE: To describe experiences of Latina women who were currently pregnant or recently gave birth around discrimination, anti-immigrant policies, and community violence during the early COVID-19 pandemic.
    METHODS: Qualitative secondary analysis.
    METHODS: Online or phone interviews.
METHODS: Latina women who were currently pregnant or recently gave birth (N = 26).
METHODS: We used reflexive thematic analysis to examine transcribed data from semistructured interviews conducted during the early COVID-19 pandemic with a subgroup of participants enrolled in a larger study related to prenatal care. Participants were English- or Spanish-speaking, Medicaid-eligible, Latina-identifying women who resided in Fresno County, California. We analyzed responses to questions about personal discrimination, the Black Lives Matter movement, and immigration policies using the theoretical frameworks of critical race theory and the political economy of health.
RESULTS: We identified four major themes: Avoidance of Community Engagement, Chronic Fear and Vigilance, The Role of Media, and Everyday Discrimination and Injustice.
CONCLUSIONS: Participant experiences reflect the pervasiveness of fear and socioeconomic inequity and call attention to the racialized structures that affect health and health care access for Latina women. These exposures during the perinatal period may have intergenerational effects. These findings underscore the need for responsive and race-conscious perinatal nursing care for Latina women, assessment of the effect of the current sociopolitical environment on well-being, and policies that support equitable access to health and social care.

During the most recent wave of anti-racism movements in the U.S., Critical Race Theory has gained attention as a key mechanism to identify, deconstruct, and challenge dominant white American ideologies and their associated institutional practices. Given that Critical Race Theory threatens to unmask and destabilize centralized white racialized power in the United States, dominant white cultural and institutional backlash to attack, suppress, and invalidate anti-racist ideologies and practices has reached new levels. This article proposes that the American conservative right-wing uses a core rhetorical strategy known as Institutional DARVO to undermine anti-racism movements and Critical Race Theory. Institutional DARVO is a systems-level extension of DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) which identifies three specific patterns of abuse seen in intimate partner violence. This article will provide an analysis of the document issued by former President Donald J. Trump on September 22, 2020, \"Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping,\" to illustrate the governmental-political use of Institutional DARVO in the backlash against Critical Race Theory. This Executive Order has influenced conservative political ideas and rhetoric that has fueled the growing surge of book bans, anti-DEI governmental practices and policies, anti-education legislation, and the recent supreme court decision to declare affirmative action unlawful. Identifying these core patterns and strategies used by primarily white conservative groups and institutions to challenge anti-racist movements is critically important in addressing both the realities and false narratives around race and inequity in the United States, as these narratives are impacting our current social, political, legal, and educational culture, practices, and policies.

Families of color in the United States experience homelessness at a disproportionately higher rate than White families; however, little is known about how scholars account for race and ethnicity in family homelessness research. This scoping review analyzes how researchers examine race and ethnicity in conceptual frameworks, methods, and analysis. Following PRISMA-ScR reporting standards, I searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, and ERIC for quantitative studies including a housing outcome for homeless service-involved families. I used Covidence to screen for inclusion and extract data, and QuADS to evaluate study quality. Fourteen studies met inclusion criteria. Researchers\' articles lacked theory and the context of racism, lacked detail on how race and ethnicity were conceptualized and operationalized, and most (71%) did not disaggregate results. Without putting data within the context of systemic racism and disaggregating outcomes, research will produce incomplete knowledge on family homelessness, leading to ineffective interventions for families of color.

BUILD is a NIH initiative designed to retain underrepresented undergraduates in biomedicine. Of the 10 BUILD sites, BUILD PODER is the only space-and-place that approaches this initiative through the framework of critical race theory (CRT). A feature of BUILD PODER\'s path to student empowerment is liberatory race-conscious mentorship. Researchers developed, implemented, and evaluated a quintipartite CRT-based antiracist-anticolonial online training program for biomedical educators nationwide. We review the social scientific and historical knowledge used to create these novel mentorship training modules. We describe the modular content and activities. We also report evaluation data obtained during beta-testing and outline how this information helped finalize the product. Discussed are the individual- and institutional-level implications of modularizing the developmental process of liberatory race consciousness.

The principles of social justice, equity, diversity, inclusion (JEDI) have received increasing attention in behavior analysis circles, but the conversation has largely centered on implications for applied behavior analysis practice and research. It may be less clear to researchers who conduct basic and translational research how JEDI principles can inform and inspire their work. This article synthesizes publications from behavior analysis and other scientific fields about tactics of JEDI-informed research. We organized this scholarship across five stages of research from developing the research question to sharing findings and curated sources for an audience of behavioral science researchers. We discuss reflexive practice, representation, belongingness, participatory research, quantitative critical theory, and open science, among other topics. Some researchers may have already adopted some of the practices outlined, some may begin new practices, and some may choose to conduct experimental analyses of JEDI problems. Our hope is that those actions will be reinforced by the behavior analysis scientific community. We conclude by encouraging the leadership of this journal to continue to work toward the structural changes necessary to make the experimental analysis of behavior just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive.

A bystander to racial violence is conventionally thought of as someone who witnesses an overt act of racial oppression at the interpersonal level, such as police brutality. However, racial violence in health research, pedagogy, and practice often shows up more covertly, like through epistemic injustice, deficits-based framing, and racial essentialism. We aim to expand how we think about bystanders and perpetrators of racial violence within health institutions, and how antiracism bystander behavioral approaches can be deployed to intervene against such violence. Existing public health antiracism frameworks, such as the Public Health Critical Race Praxis and the PEN-3 Cultural Model, offer valuable constructs and processes through which health practitioners, researchers, and academics can disrupt racial violence. Such antiracism frameworks are well suited to provide individuals within public health and health care with the knowledge, skills, and efficacy to intervene as engaged bystanders against racism within their contexts. To illustrate how constructs within antiracism frameworks can be applied by bystanders in various health settings, we outline case examples of antiracism bystander interventions across three scenarios. The more bystanders there are within health institutions that are equipped with antiracism tools, the more likely normative behaviors uplifting White supremacy within these institutions can be disrupted and health equity can be actualized.

BACKGROUND: Over two decades of research about traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation emphasized the persistence of racial health disparities in functional outcomes that disproportionately impact Black populations without naming or addressing racism as the root problem. Further, the experiences of Black people with TBI have yet to be documented and accounted for in scientific scholarship from the perspectives of Black persons in Canada.
OBJECTIVE: This study intended to examine the rehabilitation narratives of Black TBI survivors, family caregivers, and rehabilitation providers and use critical race theory as a conceptual framework to understand how anti-Black racism manifests in those experiences.
METHODS: Through critical narrative inquiry informed by a critical constructivist paradigm and a critical race theory lens, in-depth narrative interviewing were conducted with seven survivors, three family caregivers, and four rehabilitation providers. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis within and across groups of participants to conceptualize themes and sub-themes.
RESULTS: Themes captured how racism becomes institutionalized in TBI rehabilitation: (1) the institutional construction of deficient Black bodies, (2) the institutional construction of rehabilitation access, (3) the institutional investment in resisting and approximating whiteness in rehabilitation practice, and (4) the institutional construction of deficient Black futures.
CONCLUSIONS: Study findings point to the dire need to ensure rehabilitation programs, services, and the delivery of care are not determined based on inequitable practices, racial biases and assumptions about Black people, which determine who deserves to get into rehabilitation and have opportunities to be supported in working towards living a full and meaningful life.

OBJECTIVE: To explore racially minoritized families\' perceptions on how, and if, physicians should address children\'s racial identity and concepts of racism within clinical settings.
METHODS: Parents of racially minoritized children, ages 5 through 18, were interviewed to explore experiences with racial identity formation, discrimination, and the extent to which they wanted pediatricians to address these topics. Children were included at the discretion of their parents. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed through a critical race theory lens based in constructivist grounded theory.
RESULTS: Parents encouraged their children to embrace their racial identities but also wanted to shield them from negative experiences of racism to preserve identity safety. Parents felt pediatricians should address racial issues in a manner specific to their child\'s situation. Thoughtful inclusion of race-related questions, whether in discussion or on questionnaires, is essential to prevent tension in a therapeutic relationship. There was no consensus on the use of preclinical screening. Instead, families highlighted the importance of embracing humility, trust, and respect.
CONCLUSIONS: Participant families have preferences for approaches to address the effects of racism on their children\'s health. Pediatricians should understand the importance of identity safety and approach their discussions with cultural humility, which includes self-reflection, empathy, active listening, and flexible negotiation. Above all, pediatricians need to create a safe environment for appropriate discussion of these issues.

In various European countries, the post-fascist nationalist and populist parties identified by Ignazi in the early 1990s \'silent counter-revolution\' now hold power, at least as part of coalitions. The values they represent can no longer be described as marginal to the national conversations on identity, immigration and security, issues that revolve around racialized understandings of the social world. In recent years we have observed similar phenomena in the Americas and Asia (with the Trump, Bolsonaro and Modi regimes). Moreover, state actors and social movements have developed initiatives aimed at undermining and reversing any small-sometimes symbolic-progress made toward equality. Various attacks on academic concepts relating to racism in the UK, France and the USA, for example, are not isolated stand-alones but elements of a global pushback against such ideas, orchestrated and encouraged by the nationalist political right, working through media, government and funded civil society organisations. These discourses redraw national identity to portray antiracist work as unpatriotic and indeed threatening to the nation. One of the strands in France\'s long and fractious conversation about its colonial history and postcolonial present has constructed an opposition between republican values and Muslims. The American right\'s long war on racial equality has generated a campaign to eradicate \'critical race theory\' from education. These two examples illustrate and identify common elements and specifics in a global trend whereby the concepts used by activists and social scientists to understand and frame struggles for racial equality are deliberately and strategically invalidated and vilified in the public domain, and ideologically produced as un-patriotic. I call this discourse \'anti-anti racism\'. These efforts are part of wider campaigns, or \'counter acts\', aimed at reversing progressive political gains from the last half century.

UNASSIGNED: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a chronic disease process and a public health concern that disproportionately impacts Black populations. While there is an abundance of literature on race and TBI outcomes, there is a lack of scholarship that addresses racism within rehabilitation care, and it remains untheorized. This article aims to illuminate how racism becomes institutionalized in the scientific scholarship that can potentially inform rehabilitation care for persons with TBI and what the implications are, particularly for Black populations.
UNASSIGNED: Applying Bacchi\'s What\'s the Problem Represented to be approach, the writings of critical race theory (CRT) are used to examine the research about race and TBI rehabilitation comparable to CRT in other disciplines, including education and legal scholarship.
UNASSIGNED: A CRT examination illustrates that racism is institutionalized in the research about race and TBI rehabilitation through colourblind ideologies, meritocracy, reinforcement of a deficit perspective, and intersections of race and the property functions of whiteness. A conceptual framework for understanding institutional racism in TBI rehabilitation scholarship is presented.
UNASSIGNED: The findings from this article speak to the future of TBI rehabilitation research for Black populations, the potential for an anti-racist agenda, and implications for research and practice.
Critical race theory contributes to a comprehensive understanding of racism in the literature about race and traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation by asking how racism operates in the scholarship, including methods, analyses, interpretations, and conclusions.Applying a critical race theory lens in TBI rehabilitation has the potential to inform antiracist scholarship that holds important implications for critical rehabilitation research, practice, professional training, and policy.Implications for rehabilitation practice include opening up opportunities to address how race and racism shape rehabilitation outcomes to imagine different possibilities, programs, and futures for Black people with TBI with various communities of practice.
