    BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a dermatophyte infection of the scalp and hair that affects a large number of people worldwide. The disease commonly affects children and manifests with varying degrees of hair loss, scalp inflammation, and psychosocial impact. In Nigeria, the burden of tinea capitis is worrisome affecting over 15,000,000 school-age children. Molecular techniques complement the conventional mycological examinations in laboratory diagnosis of tinea capitis. In this study, we identified dermatophytes species causing tinea capitis in Kano, Nigeria, using ITS-based nucleotide sequencing technique in addition to conventional mycological examination.
    METHODS: We collected 112 samples from the scalp of children with clinically diagnosed tinea capitis at the dermatology clinic of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, between April and September 2019. The samples were processed and subjected to direct microscopy and mycological culture to isolate dermatophytes species that were identified morphologically and using ITS sequencing.
    RESULTS: Out of the 112 patients investigated, the majority (59.8%) were between the ages 6 and 9 years with a mean age of 7.3 ± 1.9 years. Males (79.5%) were predominantly affected. Black dot (46.4%) was the most common clinical type of tinea capitis followed by gray patch (39.3%) and kerion (1.8%). Favus was not observed. Microsporum audouinii (45.7%) was the predominant etiologic agent followed by Trichophyton soudanense (28.6%), T. violaceum (22.9%), and T. tonsurans (2.9%).
    CONCLUSIONS: The prominence of anthropophilic dermatophytes as the main causes of tinea capitis in our localities suggests that public health interventions to promote health education and good hygiene practices would minimize the transmission rate of tinea capitis among children in the study area.

    BACKGROUND: In Mauritania, only an investigation carried out 26 years ago allows to report epidemiological findings about tinea capitis in Nouakchott. The objective of this study was to reactualize the tinea capitis epidemiological, clinical and mycological profile in school children and to compare this profile in urban and rural area.
    METHODS: All subscribed students in targeted schools and present during the investigation were examined clinically before samples collection. Mycological diagnosis was made by direct examination and culture in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar with chloramphenicol and supplemented with cycloheximide. The results were considered positive when culture with the presence of dermatophytes was obtained.
    RESULTS: Prevalence of tinea capitis among school children was 10.50% and it was more important in rural area (12.21%) than in urban area (9.52%). The age group ranged between 6 and 8 years was the most affected (13.58%). According to the gender, male (11.46%) were more affected than female (9.62%). Trichophytic tinea were predominant and Trichophyton soudanense was more isolated followed by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton schoenleinii and Microsporum audouinii.

    We report an outbreak of Trichophyton soudanense causing tinea capitis and corporis in an orphanage in Myanmar. The thirty orphan children were suspected to have anthropophilic tinea but zoonotic tinea could not be excluded as all children were playing with stray dogs. Direct mycological examinations of hair and scalp samples showed filaments but culture assays remained sterile. We revealed T. soudanense as the infectious agent by PCR amplification of extracted fungal DNA and further sequencing of the PCR products. Children were successfully treated by terbinafine and reinfection was prevented by hygiene measures. This case report shed the light on T. soudanense infection on another continent than Africa and on the significant help of PCR identification.

    Outbreaks of tinea capitis (TC) can be a source of medical and economic burden for healthcare systems; Griseofulvin and terbinafine are considered to be effective first-line treatments for TC. In order to compare the efficacy of griseofulvin and terbinafine for the treatment of TC in a paediatric population of African immigrants in the Tel Aviv area, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of all cases of TC diagnosed and treated between March 2016 and February 2018 at a dedicated TC paediatric dermatology clinic at the Tel Aviv Medical Center (which serves as a referral centre for the paediatric refugee population in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area). Epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory data were collected, and 304 patients were included. Trichophyton violaceum (TV), Trichophyton soudanense (TS) and Microsporum audouinii (MA) were the prominent causative organisms. Treatment with griseofulvin suspension for 12 weeks was compared with (a) griseofulvin suspension for 8 weeks and with (b) terbinafine tablets for 4 weeks. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding age, sex, country of birth, ethnicity and the causative organism. Twelve weeks of griseofulvin treatment had a statistically significant better cure rate than 4 weeks of terbinafine. Treatment was significantly more effective when TC was due to infections with MA and TS as compared with TV. No statistically significant difference was observed between 12- and 8-week treatment with griseofulvin.

    In this study, a novel real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay (DermaGenius®2.0, PathoNostics BV, Maastricht, The Netherlands) and a recently developed microarray test (EUROArray Dermatomycosis, Euroimmun, Lübeck, Germany) were evaluated regarding their diagnostic specificity to identify dermatophyte DNA. The tests were compared to conventional methods and sequencing. The microarray Dermatomycosis test allows the detection of 50 dermatophytes and definitive identification of 23 dermatophyte species, 6 yeasts and moulds combined in one test. In comparison, real-time PCR is able to identify 11 dermatophytes and one yeast at the species level. Using the EUROArray, 22 out of 24 dermatophyte species were correctly identified. Using real-time PCR, 9 out of the 11 different dermatophytes included in the test kit were correctly identified. Both molecular tests for detection and differentiation of dermatophytes are useful tools for daily clinical practice. The real-time PCR test does not detect as many species, and specificity is slightly lower. However, real-time PCR is a very fast and easy to perform test, especially since no post-PCR step is necessary. Real-time PCR detects the most frequent dermatophytes like T. rubrum, T. interdigitale, and M. canis without any problems. The EUROArray is more elaborate to perform in the lab, due to the hybridization step. However, the EUROArray shows higher specificity and can detect a much broader range of causative agents, including rare species, in dermatomycology.

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the epidemiological and etiological profile of tinea capitis in adults in Dakar (Senegal).
    METHODS: A 9-month prospective, multicenter, descriptive and analytic study. Patients included were aged over 18 years. Mycological tests were used to confirm the diagnosis.
    RESULTS: 121 patients were included with a mean age of 36.1 years and a hospitalisation frequency of 0.8%. The age range of 64.4% of patients was between19 and 38 years. 51% of patients were housewives. A low socioeconomic level was found in 72.8% of cases. In 3.3% of patients, the disease began in childhood. 31.4% of patients had already consulted a traditional healer. Similar familial cases were noted in 60.3% of patients. Contact with a sheep was noted in 32.2% of cases, deliberate skin lightening in 64% of women, hair salon attendance in 46.7% of women, and immunosuppression in 17.3% of patients, while itching was present in 95.5%. Dermatologic examination showed scaled plaques and a diffuse form, with 92.6% and 64% (n=75) respectively. Wood\'s light examination was positive in 40.2% of patients. A positive culture test was found in 71%. The most frequently encountered species were: T. soudanense (65%), M. audouinii (21%), T. rubrum (4.7%), M. gypseum (3.5%), T. violaceum (2.3%), T. verrucosum (2.3%) and M. canis (1 case). The clinical course was favorable under treatment with griseofulvin or terbinafine.
    CONCLUSIONS: Tinea capitis in adults mainly affects young women. The diffuse form is the most common. The most frequently encountered species was T. soudanense.

    Tinea capitis (TC) is a highly contagious fungal infection of the scalp due to dermatophytes in children. To obtain information on the epidemiology of TC in the urban area of Paris, we analysed the microbiological results of 3090 patients seen with suspected TC from October 2010 to September 2015 at Saint Louis hospital, Paris, France. A peak of TC was observed in 3-6 year-old children, followed by a progressive decrease until 16 years of age. Of the 1311 positive cultures, 95% (1246) yielded one of the three anthropophilic species [Trichophyton tonsurans (33.5%), Trichophyton soudanense (38.3%), or Microsporum audouinii (28.2%)]. When considering one TC case per family, we observed a significant increase of T. tonsurans (P = .018) during these 5 years. The increase was more pronounced (P = .0047) in patients of West-African descent (n = 666), and was at the expense of M. audouinii and T. soudanense. On the other hand, the Caribbean patients (n = 85) remained predominantly (72.9%) infected by T. tonsurans. Our results show a better virulence of T. tonsurans over other species as already reported. Since T. tonsurans has not been reported in Africa, the infection of patients of West-African descent probably took place in the Paris area by exchanges with Caribbean patients. This increase of TC due to T. tonsurans was observed in the context of griseofulvin being the only licensed paediatric treatment for TC in France, which should deserve reappraisal because terbinafine may be more efficacious.

    A Senegalese lady of 17 years old presented right hand tinea unguium on all fingernails except the thumb lasting for 10 years. Mycological analysis showed with the direct examination 20% KOH mount numerous septate hyphae. Culture revealed Microsporum langeronii at a first time. The mycological analysis resumption with sampling scalp revealed a tinea capitis with M. langeronii then culture of nail pieces confirmed in a second time M. langeronii also associated with Trichophyton soudanense in the tinea unguium.

    Tinea capitis is a dermatophyte infection of scalp is commonly spread by currently infected patients, asymptomatic carriers or by fomites, such as hairdressing tools. However, studies on the risk factors of Tinea capitis remain scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dermatophytes contamination level of the hairdressing tools to which hairdressing salon customers are exposed in Sirakoro-Méguétana, a suburb of Bamako, the capital city of Mali. A total of 41 hairdressing tools were sampled in five hairdressing salons. Two anthropophilic dermatophytes species, Microsporum audouinii (53.3%) and Trichophyton soudanense (46.7%), were cultured from 30 (73.2%) samples. This first study, addressing hairdressing salons dermatophyte contamination, revealed a strikingly high contamination of hairdressing tools with dermatophyte propagules, which exposes hairdressing salons customers to an important dermatophytosis risk. The sterilisation of hairdressing tools is central to preventing dermatophytoses spreading. Appropriate community information and hairdressers training should be implemented in this view.
