    Kale (Brassica oleracea species) is considered a functional food whose macronutrient and phytochemical contents are considered beneficial and widely considered as a superfood. In the present 6-week cross-over trial with a 2-week washout period, we compared the beneficial effects of freeze-dried kale over peas among Arab women with obesity. A total of 124 Saudi women with obesity were allocated to receive either freeze-dried kale (n = 62) or freeze-dried peas (n = 62) given in the form of 3-gram sachets thrice daily for 2 weeks, followed by a 2-week washout period and a cross-over of 4 weeks. Anthropometric measurements, glucose, lipids and markers of gut barrier function were assessed at baseline and post-intervention. Participants who took kale supplementation first resulted in significant weight reduction (p = 0.02) which was not observed among those who took peas first. Participants receiving pea supplementation first experienced a significant decline in Hba1c (p = 0.005) and CD14 (p = 0.03), but C-peptide increased (p = 0.05). Crossover analysis revealed significant carryover effects in most variables with non-significant combined treatment effects. Among the variables with no carryover effect with significant combined treatment effect include HbA1c which was in favor of the pea group (p = 0.005) and C-peptide which was modestly in favor of the kale group (p = 0.05). While both freeze dried kale and pea supplementation appear beneficial, supplementation of freeze-dried pea appears to be more effective in terms of acute glycemic control than kale. The study suggests that common but less-hyped vegetables such as pea maybe equally, if not more beneficial than the more expensive promoted superfoods such as kale. Longer clinical trials using a parallel design instead of cross-over are recommended to strengthen present findings.

    BACKGROUND: Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seeds have become increasingly popular among health-conscious consumers due to their high content of ω-3 fatty acids, which provide various health benefits. Comprehensive chemical analyses of chia seeds\' fatty acids and proteins have been conducted, revealing their functional properties. Recent studies have confirmed the high ω-3 content of chia seed oil and have hinted at additional functional characteristics.
    METHODS: This review article aims to provide an overview of the botanical, morphological, and biochemical features of chia plants, seeds, and seed mucilage. Additionally, we discuss the recent developments in genetic and molecular research on chia, including the latest transcriptomic and functional studies that examine the genes responsible for chia fatty acid biosynthesis. In recent years, research on chia seeds has shifted its focus from studying the physicochemical characteristics and chemical composition of seeds to understanding the metabolic pathways and molecular mechanisms that contribute to their nutritional benefits. This has led to a growing interest in various pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and agricultural applications of chia. In this context, we discuss the latest research on chia, as well as the questions that remain unanswered, and identify areas that require further exploration.
    CONCLUSIONS: Nutraceutical compounds associated with significant health benefits including ω-3 PUFAs, proteins, and phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity have been measured in high quantities in chia seeds. However, comprehensive investigations through both in vitro experiments and in vivo animal and controlled human trials are expected to provide greater clarity on the medicinal, antimicrobial, and antifungal effects of chia seeds. The recently published genome of chia and gene editing technologies, such as CRISPR, facilitate functional studies deciphering molecular mechanisms of biosynthesis and metabolic pathways in this crop. This necessitates development of stable transformation protocols and creation of a publicly available lipid database, mutant collection, and large-scale transcriptomic datasets for chia.

    Commercially produced cyanobacteria preparations sold under the name spirulina are widely consumed, due to their traditional use as a nutrient-rich foodstuff and subsequent marketing as a superfood. Despite their popularity, the microbial composition of ponds used to cultivate these bacteria is understudied. A total of 19 pond samples were obtained from small-scale spirulina farms and subjected to metagenome and/or virome sequencing, and the results were analysed. A remarkable level of prokaryotic and viral diversity was found to be present in the ponds, with Limnospira sp. and Arthrospira sp. sometimes being notably scarce. A detailed breakdown of prokaryotic and viral components of 15 samples is presented. Twenty putative Limnospira sp.-infecting bacteriophage contigs were identified, though no correlation between the performance of these cultures and the presence of phages was found. The high diversity of these samples prevented the identification of clear trends in sample performance over time, between ponds or when comparing successful and failed fermentations.

    Young shoots of cereals are widely regarded as superfoods with health benefits attributed to their potential antioxidant activity and antioxidant-related effects (e.g. anticancer). The current study aimed to examine the chemical characteristics of Hordeum vulgare methanolic and aqueous extracts and assess their antioxidant activity using the DDPH and ORAC. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of xanthine oxidase was screened. TLC bioautography was employed to determine the polarity of the compounds present in the extracts that exhibited the most potent free radical scavenging activity. Total flavonoid content of the methanolic and aqueous extracts was 0.14 mg QE/g and 0.012 mg QE/g, respectively. The antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract was found to be more potent, with a value of 0.97 ± 0.13 mmol TE/g than the aqueous extract which had no activity. This study presents novel findings on the xanthine inhibitory activity of H. vulgare. The methanolic extract demonstrated moderate inhibition of xanthine oxidase with a value of 23.24%. The results of our study were compared with the phytochemical and pharmacological analysis of Triticum aestivum, and further comparison was made with the data reported in the literature. Inconsistencies were observed in the chemical and pharmacological properties of H. vulgare, which could be a result of using herbal material harvested in different vegetative phases and various methods used for extraction. The findings of our study indicate that the timing of the harvest and extraction method may play crucial role in attaining the optimal phytochemical composition of H. vulgare, hence enhancing its pharmacological activity.

    Industrial hemp has gained increasing interests for its applications in multifaceted areas, including foods, pharmaceuticals and reinforcing materials. The high protein content of hempseeds, presence of essential fatty acids and balanced ratio of omega 6:3 fatty acids, makes hemp an ideal source of choice amongst nutritionists and food product developers. The use of hemp has also been advocated in lowering the risks of certain medical conditions. The antimicrobial and antioxidant feature of oil expands its potential in innovative packaging solutions in the form of coatings or films for shelf-life extension. Fiber from hemp hulls, herd or stalks encourages it as a reinforcement material with eco-friendly attributes. This review explores the applications of hemp in novel product development, with the highlights of its nutritional benefits and antimicrobial efficacy in food and packaging sectors.

The current review offers a comprehensive synthesis of the therapeutic applications as well as technologies utilized for the extraction and purification of phycocyanin. Moreover, this discourse delves into the examination of various advantageous techniques for extracting and purifying phycocyanin, encompassing physical, chemical, and enzymatic methods. The data derived from a multitude of studies strongly indicate the potential therapeutic applications of phycocyanin, encompassing its notable attributes as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory agent, anticancer agent, antiviral agent, antimicrobial agent, antiallergic agent, anti-obesity agent, antihypertensive agent, and an immunological agent.

    Rubus species holds promise as a valuable source of polyphenols and bioactive compounds, offering significant potential as functional food ingredients with both nutraceutical and pharmaceutical benefits. However, many edible species within this genus remain under-explored and their importance is largely unrecognized. This review aims to provide an overview of the nutritional and bioactive components of both explored and under-explored Rubus species, highlighting their potential health advantages, value addition, and recent advancements. The economic exploitation of Rubus is currently limited to a few cultivated species, while numerous non-conventional and wild edible species are overlooked. Recognizing the economic and nutritional significance of exploited Rubus species, it is imperative to explore the untapped potential of these underutilized plants. By doing so, these species can be preserved from endangerment and contribute to nutritional and livelihood security for communities having access to them. This review emphasizes the importance of understanding the exceptional characteristics of Rubus species as \"superfoods\" and encourages the promotion and cultivation of these unexplored species. By expanding the cultivation and utilization of under-explored Rubus species, we can unlock their full potential and support sustainable nutritional and economic benefits.

    The increasing trade and popularity of açaí prompt this review. Therefore, it is imperative to provide an overview of the fruit\'s characteristics and the available data on its marketing, research, and products derived from its pulp and seeds to comprehend the current state of the açaí industry. Concerning food applications, it was observed that there is still room for developing processes that effectively preserve the bioactive compounds of the fruit while also being economically feasible, which presents an opportunity for future research. A notable research trend has been focused on utilizing the fruit\'s seeds, a byproduct of açaí processing, which is still considered a significant technological challenge. Furthermore, the studies compiled in this review attest to the industry\'s considerable progress and ongoing efforts to demonstrate the various properties of açaí, driving the sector\'s exponential growth in Brazil and worldwide.

    Spirulina maxima is a cyanobacterium considered a \"superfood\" due to its metabolites and nutrient content. These include a complex mixture of minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, proteins, and accessory pigments. In recent years, it has positioned itself as a promising source of bioactive molecules for the treatment of several diseases, including metabolic syndrome, coronary diseases, cancer, and the improvement of health modulating oxidative stress. C-Phycocyanin (C-PC) is a photosynthetic pigment from green-blue cyanobacterium and the most abundant phycobiliprotein in the Spirulina genus with various pharmacological properties attributed due to its antioxidant capacity but has no specific cellular target. This has made it a molecule of great interest in biomedical research. This review focuses on the pharmacological effects and the benefits on metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress of C-PC.

    Hydrocotyle bonariensis is an edible herb, that is also used for traditional medical purposes. It is high in antioxidants, phenols, and flavonoids. However, there is limited information on the nutritional composition and the mechanisms by which nutritional and functional constituents of H. bonariensis affect human metabolism. With an aim to identify gaps in evidence to support the mainstream use of H. bonariensis for health and as a functional food, this review summarises current knowledge of the taxonomy, habitat characteristics, nutritional value and health-related benefits of H. bonariensis and its extracts. Ethno-medical practices for the plant are supported by pharmacological studies, yet animal model studies, clinical trials and food safety assessments are needed to support the promotion of H. bonariensis and its derivatives as superfoods and for use in the modern pharmaceutical industry.
