    BACKGROUND: France has the sixth highest incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) in Europe, but the epidemiological impact of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) remains poorly documented. The objective of our study was to assess the proportion of OPCs caused by HR-HPV in Paris, and its suburbs, over the four past decades. This area accounts for almost one-fifth of the total population of France.
    METHODS: OPCs diagnosed in 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2020/2021 in two of the main referral cancer centers for HNCs in Paris and its suburbs were retrieved from the tumor biobanks. HPV status was determined by p16-staining and HPV-DNA detection. Samples were considered HPV-driven if both assays were positive. Results were compared to the French cancer registry data.
    RESULTS: Samples from 697 OPC patients were assessed (including 82 % of all samples diagnosed in 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021). The proportion of HPV-driven cases rose from 2.7 % to 53 % between 1981 and 2021. HPV16 was the dominant genotype during the study period. Of patients with HPV-driven OPC, 81 % were male and 42 % were smokers versus 80 % and 92 % in their HPV-negative counterparts. The age of OPC patients increased significantly, during the study period, independent of their HPV status CONCLUSION: The proportion of HPV-driven OPCs has significantly increased in Paris and its suburbs, during the last four decades. OPCs has become the 2nd predominant type of head and neck cancer, in France. This may be linked to the rise in HPV-driven cases and the decrease of tobacco and alcohol consumption in men.

    UNASSIGNED: Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, occurring in ≈1% of the general population. An increased risk of malignancy among patients with AFib would be of substantial public health importance, given the high prevalence and associated economic burden of both disorders.
    UNASSIGNED: To evaluate the relationship between atrial fibrillation (AFib) and cancer.
    UNASSIGNED: We conducted an extensive database search on PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and SEER Database from their inception to September 2019 for any study that evaluated the association between AFib and cancer.
    UNASSIGNED: In the first 3 months of AFib diagnosis, Ostenfeld et al. reported an absolute cancer risk of 2.5% with a standardized incidence ratio of 7.02 and 3.53 for metastatic and localized cancer, respectively. Likewise, Saliba et al. detected an increase in the odds of cancer diagnosis in first 90 days after AF diagnosis with OR of 1.85. Moreover, in another study new-onset breast and colorectal cancer was especially associated with AF in the first 90 days after diagnosis with HR of 3.4 but not thereafter (HR 1.0). Similarly, Conen et al. reported high relative risk of cancer with HR of 3.54 in the first 3 months after new-onset AFib. However, beyond the initial 90 day period, the risk of cancer in AFib is only slightly increased.
    UNASSIGNED: Based on our review, there appears to be an increase in risk of subsequent diagnosis of cancer in patients with AF, likely owing to the shared risk factors between the two conditions. While the results of this study raise interesting questions for future search, they are not currently strong enough to justify initiating cancer screening for an occult cancer in a patient with AF. Regardless, measures to target modification of these shared risk factors remains an important consideration.

    France has one of the highest incidence of head and neck cancers in Europe. Despite this, the epidemiological impact of high-risk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) remains poorly investigated.
    We prospective assessed the proportion of oropharyngeal cancers due to HR-HPV in 15 hospitals throughout France. HPV-status was determined by p16-immunohistochemistry, and by detection of HPV-DNA using in situ hybridization. Cancers were classified as HPV-driven if both p16-immunohistochemistry and HPV-DNA assays were positive. Demographical and clinical features were recorded.
    291 patients with palatine-tonsil or tongue-base cancers were recruited from March-2011 to July-2012. Of these, 43.1% of samples were p16-positive and 37.7% were positive for both p16 and HPV-DNA. Prognosis was significantly better in patients with HPV-driven cancers, with smoking negatively impacting patients\' oncological outcomes.
    In France, more than a third of tonsillar and tongue base cancers are HPV-driven. More research concerning the evolution of HPV-driven cancers over time is needed.

    One of the major concerns in oncology lies in the ability to detect recurrences at their earliest stage to increase the likelihood of cure following second line, or salvage, therapy. Although human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven oropharyngeal cancers have a good prognosis, 20-25% of patients will recur within 5 years of treatment and a significant portion will die from their disease. In recent years, great effort has been put toward evaluating the potential clinical utility of HPV-related biomarkers for early diagnosis of recurrent disease. Indeed, following completion of treatment, detection of HPV-DNA in oral rinses or blood and serologic assays against HPV oncoproteins could be helpful to track residual disease or recurrence. Several recent studies have reported promising findings, thus potentially paving the way for the use of biomarkers in the management of HPV-OPC. In this review, we evaluate and discuss the current knowledge on this topic and provide some directions for future research.

    High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPV) are the cause of most ano-genital cancers and a fast growing subset of oropharyngeal cancer. As these malignancies occur as a result of an HPV- infection transmitted through intimate contact, many patients with HPV- induced cancer and their partners are concerned about HPV-transmission and the potential partners\' cancer risk. Few studies have addressed this issue and whether the HPV-related cancer risk of partners of patients with HPV-related cancers is comparable to or greater than that of the general population.
    We performed a systematic review of the published literature addressing this issue. Out of 1055 references screened, 53 articles were found eligible for inclusion.
    Regarding the issue of coincidence of HPV-induced oropharyngeal and/or anogenital cancers in couples, 13 case-reports or case-series were reported and 9 larger studies based on population-registries. Four of these registry studies showed an increased risk of cervical cancer in the partner while four did not. Among the four positive studies, odds ratios for the development of HPV-related cancer among spouses were between 2.6 and 6.7. One study showed an increased risk of tongue or tonsil cancer among husbands of women with cervical dysplasia or cancer. Overall the absolute risk increase in all these studies was small, on the order of 1-3%, although potentially underestimated. Indeed, all these studies have assessed partner\'s cancer risk at only one anatomical site whereas HPV- related malignancies can affect different locations.
    This systematic review suggests a small trend of increase risk in HPV-associated cancers among spouses of patients with HPV-related cancer.
