Teucrium persicum Boiss. an Iranian endemic plant is used in Iranian traditional medicine. E-cadherin transmembrane protein participates in adherens junctions and is the main partner for β-catenin protein. The GC-MS analysis was used to detect the chemical constituents of the methanolic extract. Its effects on the transcription of the E-cadherin encoding gene, cellular levels, and localization of E-cadherin protein in PC-3 cells were investigated. About 70 chemical constituents were identified. Indirect immunofluorescence microscopy and western blotting results revealed the restoration of E-cadherin protein at cell adhesion contact sites in cells treated with T. persicum extract. Gene expression studies revealed that the extract increased the transcription of the E-cadherin encoding gene in PC-3 cells. These results suggest that T. persicum extract may contain potent compounds that provide further support for the anticancer properties of T. persicum. Surely, detailed molecular investigations are needed to find the mechanism(s) behind these effects.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and lethal disease. It is the third most common type of cancer in the world, behind lung and breast cancer, with almost 1.4 million new cases diagnosed in 2012. The risk of developing CRC is influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Adenocarcinomas comprise the vast majority (98%) of CRCs. A patient\'s likelihood of survival is associated with the tumor stage at the time of diagnosis. With regular screening, CRC can be identified early, when treatment is the most effective. However, CRC is typically asymptomatic until the advanced stages. The combination of the absence of symptoms and current screening methodology results in a significant number of patients being diagnosed in advanced stages. The purpose of the present review is to discuss and summarize the biomarkers linked to CRC progression, particularly the controversial E-cadherin, which is a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecule involved in the mesenchymal-epithelial transition.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of aspirin on the cell proliferation and migration of gastric cancer cells in p53-knockout mice. Twenty p53-/- male mice aged 6 to 7 weeks, with an average weight of 20±3 g were used. The model of gastric cancer was established by the implantation of a mouse forestomach carcinoma cell line, subcutaneously, at the back of the neck, and then the mice were randomly divided into two groups after establishment of the model (control group, n=10; experimental group, n=10). Aspirin (250 mg/kg) was added to the food in the experimental group one day before model establishment, until the end of the experiment. Mice in the control group were given regular food without aspirin. All mice were sacrificed 3 months afterwards, and gastric cancer tissues were harvested. MTT assay was used to detect the proliferation of the tumor cells. Tumor cell number was also observed. Migration ability was detected by scratch assay, and E-cadherin protein expression was evaluated by immunofluorescence. The results revealed that the proliferation ability of tumor cells in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group. In addition, cell numbers were significantly decreased and the migration ability was diminished. The expression of E-cadherin was also increased in the experimental group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). In conclusion, aspirin inhibited the cell proliferation and migration of gastric cancer cells in mice.
