    UNASSIGNED: This study aimed to assess the impact of wearing N95 and surgical masks on carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations during various activity levels, to understand the implications for mask use in different settings, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    UNASSIGNED: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
    UNASSIGNED: A systematic review was conducted, retrieving 6798 articles from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Twenty-nine articles met the inclusion criteria. Mask types were categorized into N95 and surgical masks, while activities were classified as low, medium, and high.
    UNASSIGNED: The meta-analysis revealed CO2 concentrations (mmHg) for different scenarios: No mask (37.91, 95 % CI: 36.46, 39.35), N95-low (36.83, 95 % CI: 33.57, 40.10), N95-moderate (37.85, 95 % CI: 36.51, 39.20), N95-high (39.51, 95 % CI: 38.00, 41.02), N95 with exhalation valve (35.82, 95 % CI: 32.89, 38.75), N95 without exhalation valve (38.45, 95 % CI: 37.10, 39.81), surgical mask-low (38.31, 95 % CI: 34.48, 42.14), surgical mask-moderate (35.05, 95 % CI: 31.12, 38.97), surgical mask-high (36.07, 95 % CI: 34.18, 37.96).
    UNASSIGNED: Our findings indicate that N95 masks lead to higher CO2 accumulation during various activities compared to surgical masks. Moreover, surgical masks exhibit higher CO2 concentrations during low activity compared to moderate and high activities. Notably, CO2 concentrations are higher in N95 masks without an exhalation valve compared to those with a valve. No significant difference was observed between not wearing a mask and wearing either N95 or surgical masks in terms of CO2 accumulation. These results provide important insights for mask selection and usage recommendations in different scenarios.

    UNASSIGNED: In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical effects of COVID-19 infection and vaccines on Myasthenia gravis (MG) during the pandemic.
    UNASSIGNED: A total of 141 MG patients between April 2020 and December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Data including demographic and clinical characteristics of patients, COVID-19 test results, and vaccine types (mRNA-BNT162b2 and/or inactivated-CoronaVac) were recorded. All patients were followed by face-to-face interviews and/or phone calls. Worsening MG symptoms after COVID-19 infection or vaccines were noted.
    UNASSIGNED: A total of 60 patients were diagnosed with COVID-19, and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction test results were COVID-19 positive in 54 (90%) patients. Twenty-eight (46.7%) patients had lung involvement, while 20(33.3%) patients were followed in the ward. Twelve (20%) patients were followed in the intensive care unit, and two of them (3.3%) died. Both deceased patients were unvaccinated. The most common symptoms were fatigue (78.3%), and 13(21.7%) patients were asymptomatic. Of the patients, 96(68%) received at least one dose BNT162b2 or CoronaVac, while 30.4% of the patients received ≥3 doses of vaccines. The local skin irritation and fatigue rate was significantly higher with BNT162b2 vaccine than CoronaVac (p<0.001 and p=0.004, respectively). No serious side effect was observed with either vaccine. Five patients had worsening MG symptoms after vaccination during a six-week follow-up. None of the patients experienced myasthenic crises.
    UNASSIGNED: Our study results suggest that COVID-19 infection affects MG similar to the general population and does not lead to worsening MG symptoms. Both mRNA and inactivated vaccines with proven efficacy can be used safely in MG patients.

    The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has resulted in a substantial global health crisis, with effects extending far beyond the acute phase of infection. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the long-term cardiovascular impact of COVID-19, focusing on the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, management strategies, and future research directions. SARS-CoV-2 induces cardiovascular complications through mechanisms such as inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and direct myocardial injury, leading to conditions like myocarditis, heart failure, arrhythmias, and thromboembolic events. These long-term effects, collectively called \"long COVID\" or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), present significant challenges for healthcare systems and patient management. Diagnostic approaches include imaging techniques and laboratory tests to identify and monitor cardiovascular complications. Management strategies emphasize a holistic approach, incorporating pharmacological treatments and lifestyle modifications. Special attention is required for vulnerable populations, including those with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions. Ongoing research is essential to understand the full spectrum of long-term cardiovascular impacts and to develop effective treatments. This review highlights the critical need for continued vigilance, multidisciplinary care, and research to address the cardiovascular sequelae of COVID-19 and improve long-term health outcomes for survivors.

    UNASSIGNED: Community-level changes in population mobility can dramatically change the trajectory of any directly-transmitted infectious disease, by modifying where and between whom contact occurs. This was highlighted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, where community response and nonpharmaceutical interventions changed the trajectory of SARS-CoV-2 spread, sometimes in unpredictable ways. Population-level changes in mobility also occur seasonally and during other significant events, such as hurricanes or earthquakes. To effectively predict the spread of future emerging directly-transmitted diseases, we should better understand how the spatial spread of infectious disease changes seasonally, and when communities are actively responding to local disease outbreaks and travel restrictions.
    UNASSIGNED: Here, we use population mobility data from Virginia spanning Aug 2019-March 2023 to simulate the spread of a hypothetical directly-transmitted disease under the population mobility patterns from various months. By comparing the spread of disease based on where the outbreak begins and the mobility patterns used, we determine the highest-risk areas and periods, and elucidate how seasonal and pandemic-era mobility patterns could change the trajectory of disease transmission.
    UNASSIGNED: Through this analysis, we determine that while urban areas were at highest risk pre-pandemic, the heterogeneous nature of community response induced by SARS-CoV-2 cases meant that when outbreaks were occurring across Virginia, rural areas became relatively higher risk. Further, the months of September and January led to counties with large student populations to become particularly at risk, as population flows in and out of these counties were greatly increased with students returning to school.

    UNASSIGNED: Health policy attention (HPA) refers to the extent of attention given by governments to health issues in public policy and is generally influenced by socioeconomic development. This study aimed to examine the spatiotemporal heterogeneity and clustering of the associations between socioeconomic factors and HPA.
    UNASSIGNED: Longitudinal study.
    UNASSIGNED: This study examined the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the association between public and provincial government attention, economic development, and demographic transition and HPA by using geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR). Word2Vec machine learning technology was utilized to calculate HPA data in 323 cities and independent variable data was collected in each city in China over the period of 2018-2021.
    UNASSIGNED: The results showed that there is a substantial overall rise in HPA levels throughout China following the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the GTWR results revealed significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the associations between HPA and public and provincial government attention, economic development, and demographic transition, particularly in the context of COVID-19. The impact of provincial government attention on HPA decreased from the capital of the political center outward, while the impact of public financial investment decreased in less developed cities during the pandemic. It was only cities with high levels of aging are more likely to receive greater HPA.
    UNASSIGNED: The finding highlighted the remarkable spatial and temporal variations in the associations between the variables and HPA across different regions in China, emphasizing the need for region-specific policies to strengthen the focus on health by municipal governments.

    UNASSIGNED: We investigated the risk factors associated with severe or critical Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection due to the Omicron variant in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) and determined the potential effect of COVID-19 on myasthenic exacerbation during the Omicron pandemic.
    UNASSIGNED: This retrospective study included 287 patients with MG in Tianjin, China. Clinical data of the patients were collected using electronic questionnaires, databases, and clinical records.
    UNASSIGNED: The overall infection rate was 84.7%. Advanced age, comorbidities, generalized phenotype, and MG instability were drivers of COVID-19 severity, and post-COVID-19 myasthenic exacerbation. The concurrent use of a steroid-sparing agent did not affect COVID-19 susceptibility or severity. It did lower the risk of myasthenic exacerbation after COVID-19 infection. Patients with severe COVID-19 experienced myasthenic exacerbation earlier than patients with non-severe infection (p < 0.001). The severity of COVID-19 (Hazards Ratio = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.41-6.54, p = 0.004) and the clinical phenotype (Hazards Ratio = 3.29, 95% CI: 1.63-6.63, p < 0.001) emerged as independent risk factors for early MG exacerbation.
    UNASSIGNED: Generally, patients with MG appear to be susceptible to the Omicron strains. Immunotherapy for MG did not increase COVID-19 susceptibility or severity. We do not advocate an immediate cessation of ongoing immunosuppressive treatments once a COVID-19 infection is diagnosed. Instead, a judicious evaluation of the risks and benefits, tailored to each individual, is recommended.

    UNASSIGNED: Data on the increase in mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic based on individuals\' socioeconomic positions are limited. This study examines this increase in mortality in Spain during the epidemic waves of 2020 and 2021.
    UNASSIGNED: We calculated the overall and cause-specific mortality rates during the 2017-2019 pre-pandemic period and four epidemic periods in 2020 and 2021 (first, second, third-fourth, and fifth-sixth waves). Mortality rates were analyzed based on educational levels (low, medium, and high) and across various age groups (25-64, 65-74, and 75+). The increase in mortality during each epidemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period was estimated using mortality rate ratios (MRR) derived from Poisson regression models.
    UNASSIGNED: An inverse educational gradient in overall mortality was observed across all periods; however, this pattern was not consistent for COVID-19 mortality in some age groups. Among those aged 75 years and older, highly educated individuals showed higher COVID-19 mortality during the first wave. In the 25-64 age group, individuals with low education experienced the highest overall mortality increase, while those with high education had the lowest increase. The MRRs were 1.21 and 1.06 during the first wave and 1.12 and 0.97 during the last epidemic period. In the 65-74 age group, highly educated individuals showed the highest overall mortality increase during the first wave, whereas medium-educated individuals had the highest increase during the subsequent epidemic periods. Among those aged 75 and older, highly educated individuals exhibited the highest overall mortality increase while the individuals with low education showed the lowest overall mortality increment, except during the last epidemic period.
    UNASSIGNED: The varying educational patterns of COVID-19 mortality across different age groups contributed to the disparities of findings in increased overall mortality by education levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    UNASSIGNED: Musculoskeletal pain after COVID-19 infection remains a concerning long-term complication of COVID-19. Here, our study aimed to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain associated with COVID-19 (MSPC) and healthcare-seeking behaviors, as well as the associating factors.
    UNASSIGNED: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using convenience sampling and distributed to participants anonymously through the online platform Credamo. Demographic and characteristic data of the participants were collected and analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was employed to investigate potential factors associated with MSPC and healthcare-seeking tendencies.
    UNASSIGNED: A total of 1,510 participants responded to the survey, with 42.6% (643 individuals) exhibiting MSPC. Higher education level and a greater number of concomitant symptoms were significant risk factors for MSPC, while longer exercise duration and higher PSS-10 scores were protective factors. Additionally, higher income level, frequency and severity of pain, and greater PSS-10 scores increased healthcare-seeking intention.
    UNASSIGNED: A significant proportion of individuals experience MSPC. Education level and concomitant symptoms were risk factors for MSPC, while exercise duration and PSS-10 score were potential protective factors. Income level, frequency and severity of pain, and PSS-10 score are significantly related to the willingness to seek medical treatment for MSPC.

    This case study describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of an initiative to increase COVID-19 vaccine confidence and uptake among refugee and immigrant women in Clarkston, Georgia. Applying the principles and practices of human-centered design, Mothers x Mothers was co-created by Refugee Women\'s Network and IDEO.org as a series of gatherings for refugee and immigrant mothers to discuss health issues, beginning with the COVID-19 vaccine. The gatherings included both vaccinated and unvaccinated mothers and used a peer support model, with facilitation focused on creating a trusting environment and supporting mothers to make their own health decisions. The facilitators for Mothers x Mothers gatherings were community health workers (CHWs) recruited and trained by Refugee Women\'s Network. Notably, these CHWs were active in every phase of the initiative, from design to implementation to evaluation, and the CHWs\' professional development was specifically included among the initiative\'s goals. These elements and others contributed to an effective public health intervention for community members who, for a variety of reasons, did not get sufficient or appropriate COVID-19 vaccine information through other channels. Over the course of 8 Mothers x Mothers gatherings with 7 distinct linguistic/ethnic groups, 75% of the unvaccinated participants decided to get the COVID-19 vaccine and secured a vaccine referral.

    UNASSIGNED: Natural infection or vaccination have provided robust immune defense against SARS-CoV-2 invasion, nevertheless, Omicron variants still successfully cause breakthrough infection, and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood.
    UNASSIGNED: Sequential blood samples were continuously collected at different time points from 252 volunteers who were received the CanSino Ad5-nCoV (n= 183) vaccine or the Sinovac CoronaVac inactivated vaccine (n= 69). The anti-SARS-CoV-2 prototype and Omicron BA.5.2 as well as XBB.1.16 variant neutralizing antibodies (Nab) in sera were detected by ELISA. Sera were also used to measure pseudo and live virus neutralization assay. The associations between the anti-prototype Nab levels and different HLA-ABC alleles were analyzed using artificial intelligence (AI)-deep learning techniques. The frequency of B cells in PBMCs was investigated by flow cytometry assay (FACs).
    UNASSIGNED: Individuals carrying the HLA-B*15 allele manifested the highest concentrations of anti-SARS-CoV-2 prototype Nab after vax administration. Unfortunately, these volunteers are more susceptible to Omicron BA.5.2 breakthrough infection due to their sera have poorer anti-BA.5.2 Nab and lower levels of viral neutralization efficacy. FACs confirmed that a significant decrease in CD19+CD27+RBD+ memory B cells in these HLA-B*15 population compared to other cohorts. Importantly, generating lower concentrations of cross-reactive anti-XBB.1.16 Nab post-BA.5.2 infection caused HLA-B*15 individuals to be further infected by XBB.1.16 variant.
    UNASSIGNED: Individuals carrying the HLA-B*15 allele respond better to COVID-19 vax including the CanSino Ad5-nCoV and the Sinovac CoronaVac inactivated vaccines, but are more susceptible to Omicron variant infection, thus, a novel vaccine against this population is necessary for COVID-19 pandemic control in the future.
