    The gut microbiota is closely associated with the health and production performance of livestock. Partial studies on ruminant microbiota are already in progress in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Area (QTPA) in China, but large-scale and representative profiles for the QTPA are still lacking. Here, 16S rRNA sequencing was used to analyze 340 samples from yak, cattle, yak-cattle hybrids, and Tibetan sheep, which lived in a shared environment from 4 eco-regions of the QTPA during the same season, and aimed to investigate the fecal microbiota community composition, diversity, and potential function. All samples were clustered into 2 enterotypes, which were derived from the genera Ruminococcaceae UCG-005 and Acinetobacter, respectively. Environment, human activity, species, and parasitization all affected the fecal microbiota. By assessing the relationship between the fecal microbiota and the above variables, we identified a scattered pattern of fecal microbiota dissimilarity based more significantly on diet over other factors. Additionally, gastrointestinal nematode infection could reduce the capacity of the bacterial community for biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites, carbohydrate metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism. Ultimately, this study provided a fecal microbiota profile for ruminants living in 4 eco-regions of the QTPA and its potential future applications in developing animal husbandry regimes. IMPORTANCE Cattle, yak, and sheep reside as the main ruminants distributed throughout most regions of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Area (QTPA) in China. However, there is a lack of large-scale research in the QTPA on their fecal microbiota, which can regulate and reflect host health as an internalized \"microbial organ.\" Our study depicted the fecal microbiota community composition and diversity of yak, cattle, yak-cattle hybrids, and Tibetan sheep from 4 eco-regions of the QTPA. Additionally, our results demonstrated here that the ruminant samples could be clustered into 2 enterotypes and that diet outweighed other factors in shaping fecal microbiota in the QTPA. This study provided a basis for understanding the microbiota characteristic of ruminants and its possible applications for livestock production in the QTPA.

    Infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) adversely affect meat color in lambs. Although white-rot fungi (WRF) pretreatment increases nutritional value and fiber digestion of corn straw for lambs, whether it can improve meat quality of lambs infected with GINs is unknown. The objective of this experiment was to study effects of feeding WRF-pretreated corn straw on the health and meat quality of lambs infected with GINs. Sixteen healthy Ujumqin lambs were orally drenched with 3rd-stage GINs larvae and randomly divided into two dietary treatments of control (CON) and WRF diets for 70 days of feeding. Results showed that feeding WRF-pretreated corn straw decreased L* and b* values (p < 0.05) and increased a* value (p < 0.01) of both longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles of lambs infected with GINs. Feeding WRF-pretreatment corn straw decreased fecal egg count (p = 0.014) and increased packed cell volume (p = 0.013) of lambs from 28 d of feeding and increased plasma iron content (p = 0.008) of lambs from 56 d of the feeding. Feeding WRF-pretreatment corn straw decreased myosin heavy-chain (MyHC)-I (p = 0.032) and MyHC-IIα (p = 0.025) content in LTL muscle and MyHC-I (p = 0.022) and MyHC-IIβ (p = 0.048) in SM muscle of lambs. In conclusion, although there were no significant changes in the content of most amino acids or increased intensity of better flavor compounds, meat quality and health of lambs infected with GINs was significantly improved by feeding WRF-pretreated corn straw due to increased PCV and meat color and tenderness.

    BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a major constraint to the survival and productivity of animals. In southern China, goats are the most important small domestic ruminants.
    METHODS: From May 2013 to May 2017, we conducted a longitudinal study of hircine GIN infections in Huangshantou Town, Gongan County, Hubei Province, China, using fecal egg counts.
    RESULTS: Our investigation revealed that the GINs of goats in Hubei Province have changed significantly. Over 90% of eggs detected in the first month of investigation, May 2013, belonged to the species Haemonchus contortus and Chabertia sp. There was no seasonal variation in positive rates (PRs) of GINs, but the mean eggs per gram (EPG) of GINs were higher between April and July than between September and November (P < 0.05). The gradual increase in the percentage of H. contortus eggs among all detected eggs during our research and the low cure rate of IVM mass treatment revealed the emergence of IVM resistance in H. contortus. After the implementation of an integrated GIN control strategy, which included two mass treatments (one in April/May with ABZ and another in September/October with IVM + ABZ), in 2016 and 2017, both the PRs and EPG of GINs were significantly reduced.
    CONCLUSIONS: The results presented here reveal that controlling GINs of small ruminants in small farms in southern China requires an integrated control strategy that should include monitoring of infection and anthelmintic resistance, and increased farmer education on the importance of using the appropriate drugs at the correct dose.
