    As an emotionally dynamic process, language learning is marked by fluctuations in students\' affective constructs (e.g., enjoyment, playfulness, boredom). Thus, clues supporting an ecological perspective on behavioral trends and changes in language learners\' emotional constructs driven by relational person and contextual components may be discovered. Therefore, an ecological approach enriched with the nested ecosystems model and complex dynamic system theory (CDST) can facilitate the investigation of dynamics of language students\' affective constructs. These are first categorized and analyzed on the microsystem scale concerning students\' motivation, beliefs, linguistic factors, cognitive factors, affective factors, and classroom context. Then, they are analyzed in 3 ecosystems including meso-, exo-, and macrosystems, each revealing an invaluable dimension of the reality of the emergent dynamicity of the variables. The present paper first draws attention to the dynamic nature of L2 learners\' emotional factors and raises awareness of the ecological dynamic system theory. Then, it reviews the existing ecological studies of L2 affective variables and summarizes the findings. It ends with several conclusive remarks and suggestions for the future line of research.

    Grammatical complexity has received extensive attention in second language acquisition. Although computational tools have been developed to analyze grammatical complexity, most relevant studies investigated this construct in the context of English as a second language. In response to an increasing number of L2 Chinese learners, it is important to extend the investigation of grammatical complexity in L2 Chinese. To promote relevant research, we evaluated the new computational tool, Stanza, on its accuracy of part-of-speech tagging for L2 Chinese writing. We particularly focused on eight grammatical features closely related to L2 Chinese development. Then, we reported the precisions, recalls, and F-scores for the individual grammatical features and offered a qualitative analysis of systematic tagging errors. In terms of the precision, three features have high rates, over 90% (i.e., ba and bei markers, classifiers, -de as noun modifier marker). For recall, four features have high rates, over 90% (i.e., aspect markers, ba and bei markers, classifiers, -de as noun modifier marker). Overall, based on the F-scores, Stanza has a good tagging performance on ba and bei markers, classifiers, and -de as a noun modifier marker. This evaluation provides research implications for scholars who plan to use this computational tool to study L2 Chinese development in second language acquisition or applied linguistics in general.

    When the Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) enlightened the line of inquiry in education, innovative research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative, were also introduced. Process tracing, which is among the CDST-compatible qualitative research methods, has just begun to benefit SLA research in the past few years. The present study provides a review of the conceptualization, significance, and procedural features for the implementation of the process tracing analytical method. In doing so, this review suggests a number of practices through which process tracing has been introduced in SLA. Additionally, some practical implications are provided for SLA researchers to enhance their knowledge of this new approach. Finally, future research suggestions for a more advanced use of this method are made in SLA.

    As one of the most important constructs of individual differences in second language learning, motivation has garnered a lot of attention in the area of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Nevertheless, little bibliometric research has been conducted to provide a systematic overview of this line of research, which will help researchers to better understand how motivation-related research in SLA has evolved over the past 22 years and where it might push the boundaries of SLA research into in the future. In this study, three types of bibliometric analyses (i.e., co-citation analysis, citation analysis, and keyword analysis) were performed to identify the prominent scholarly documents, authors, venues of publications, and research topics that have been highly influential in the research of motivation in SLA between 2000 and 2021. Results from scientific network maps and keyword analysis suggest significant changes in the topic over the past 22 years. The results in this study also indicate an evident continuity of theoretic development in L2 language learning motivation research. Moreover, an air of active use of qualitative approaches has been detected in L2 language learning motivation research in the last 22 years.

    With the advent of Complex dynamic systems theory (CDST) in the field of second language question (SLA), the need for suitable CDST compatible methods for the investigation of temporal change in L2 affective variables has been felt more than before. One of the innovative methods for this purpose is latent growth curve modeling (LGCM), which has recently drawn the attention of SLA scholars. However, the application of this method is still a burgeoning demand in SLA. In response to this demand, the present study provides a review of the conceptualization, significance, and technical features of the implementation of LGCM. In doing so, this review suggests a number of practices via which LGCM has been introduced in SLA. Additionally, some practical implications are provided for SLA researchers to enhance their literacy of LGCM. Finally, future research suggestions for the progress of the use of this method in SLA are discussed.

    The role of emotions in EFL teachers\' pedagogical success and efficacy has long been emphasized in the literature. However, the power and impact of teachers\' positive psycho-emotional factors like sense of connectedness and hardiness have been marginally explored in EFL contexts. Against this shortcoming, the present mini-review article made an attempt to provide the theoretical and research underpinnings of three prominent teacher-related factors, namely, connectedness, psychological hardiness, and pedagogical effectiveness as well as their interplay. Moreover, the research trends, gaps, and future directions are provided for enthusiastic researchers. Finally, some practical implications for EFL teachers, teacher trainers, and SLA researchers are offered to raise their awareness of psycho-emotional factors in second/foreign language education.

    Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE), as the most prevalent positive emotion predicting L2 learners\' academic performance and well-being, and a critical factor contributing to the creation of positive micro-institutions (e.g., the classrooms), has received remarkable scholarly attention across the globe in the past eight years. Despite the fact that FLE is the most extensively investigated positive emotion and extant research has yielded rich and invaluable findings, it is far from being adequately studied, leaving vast lacunas to be explored. Therefore, this conceptual review article is written to familiarize language education researchers, practitioners, instructors, and learners with the current status of FLE research and its potential applications in L2 education, and suggest potential avenues for future research. To this aim, by making a diachronical and synchronical delineation of extant literature with regard to the conceptualization and theorization of FLE, and the methodology of FLE research, we argue that it is incumbent on researchers to make a new line of enquiry into the actualization of the ascertained affordances of FLE and its transmission in the microsystem of the classroom. Subsequently, by drawing on the broaden-and-build theory and the control-value theory, we highlight the significance of conducting FLE research with theoretical triangulation and methodological diversity to validate the data and minimum bias. Next, while highlighting the critical role of FLE in L2 education, we suggest some pedagogical implications with the hope of enlightening the practice of key stakeholders such as instructors, teacher educators, and teacher recruiters. In the end, the limitations of existing literature are explicated, and avenues for future studies on FLE in L2 education domain are put forward for interested researchers.

    The second wave of positive psychology (PP 2.0) focuses on the way positive and negative psychology complement each other in social contexts. It offers a balanced interactive model that aims at enhancing the optimal learning outcome through the interplay of positive and negative emotions. Building on a large qualitative study of students\' and teachers\' experiences in EFL classrooms in China, this paper argues that adopting the principles of PP 2.0 could deepen our understanding of learners\' emotional experience in SLA. Using one illustrative case, it shows the dynamic and complexity of students\' shifting emotions as they interact in the classroom over a span of 2 months. One major finding is that the students\' positive emotions could transcend negative emotions and influence their engagement in classroom interaction. This study contributes to the existing research into emotional experiences of classroom interaction that integrates the observable, reflective, and participatory. It draws on interrelated sets of data, including a student and teacher profile questionnaire, classroom observation and recording, student and teacher reflective journals documenting their classroom interaction experiences, and stimulated recall interviews based on recordings and reflective journals. The study in the first place has implications for English teachers and teacher trainers in China and abroad as well as researchers interested in the role of emotional experience in English language learning and teaching.

    This study investigated the surface characteristics and biocompatibility of ultrafine-grain pure titanium (UFG Ti) after sandblasting and acid etching (SLA) treatment to determine an effective method for modification of UFG Ti dental implants. The UFG Ti was processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP). The micromorphology, roughness, and wettability of its surface were studied after SLA modification in different conditions. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were subsequently seeded onto the specimens to evaluate the biocompatibility of cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation compared with commercially pure titanium (CP Ti). The results showed that surface characteristics of UFG Ti were affected by the pressure of sandblasting and acid etching time in addition to material properties. The favorable hierarchical porous structure that would benefit cell adhesion was formed on the UFG Ti surface when the pressure of sandblasting was 0.6 MPa and the acid etching time was 5 min; at this time, UFG Ti promoted proliferation and differentiation to a greater extent than CP Ti because of its excellent wettability. From this study, it could be seen that UFG Ti can be used as a dental implant material after proper surface modification.
