OBJECTIVE: Nutritional security for women working in agriculture is one of the most serious and persisting concerns in developing countries like India. The present study surveyed the dynamics of nutritional status based on dietary intake, namely calorie, carbohydrate, protein, fat, calcium, folic acid, iron, vitamin, carotene, etc., in the farm women in the central India state of Madhya Pradesh.
METHODS: A total of 225 farm women (ages 18 to 60 y) who were engaged in agricultural activities were selected for this study. The nutritional survey was done by personal interview on food intake with a pretested interview schedule and daily dietary intake. The survey questionnaire includes information on family, socioeconomic status, income, education, occupation, and food habits of the farm women. As \"daily dietary intake\", respondents were asked to list all foods and beverages consumed for a whole day.
RESULTS: The mean age, height, weight, and body mass index of the respondents were 34.93 y, 1519 mm, 49.47 kg, and 21.5 kg/m2, respectively. Based on different grades of nutrition, body mass index results indicated that 28% were underweight, 52.4% were normal, 17.8% were overweight, and 1.8% were obese. Inequality (estimated by Gini coefficient) analysis found that there is not much variation in the nutrient intake levels across the physical status of the respondents, with the exception of carotene and vitamin C. The classification and regression tree analysis indicated that with the exception of fat, the rest of the nutrients were not significant in determining the farm women\'s physical status in terms of weight. In the analysis of the waist-to-hip ratio, the risk of metabolic diseases (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.) was higher in the 31- to 40-y age group.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall food frequency indicated that poor intake of micronutrients in their diet according to their work activity results in poor health status. The study affirmed that the actual intake of nutrients varied significantly across the physical status of the farm women, their physical activities carried out, and their monthly income level. The study also suggests various policy options to overcome the nutritional gap in farm women.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the association between central obesity and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) among men in southern China, and test the hypothesis that central obesity measured by the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a predictor of the severity of LUTS.
METHODS: In all, 4303 men from the Fangchenggang Area Male Healthy and Examination Survey (FAMHES) were included in this study. LUTS were assessed by the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), whereas central obesity was evaluated by the WHR. The association between WHR and LUTS was tested using logistic and Cox regression analyses.
RESULTS: After screening, 2917 participants were in the study. Univariate analysis indicated significant differences in WHR in the presence of LUTS (P = .012). After stratification by age, logistic regression indicated that LUTS were more frequent in 60-year-old men with a higher WHR (odds ratio [OR] 2.89, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.21-6.89) compared with participants <40 years old. Cox regression analysis after pairing of 252 LUTS cases and 252 control subjects from the 2917 eligible participants according to age (±5 years), indicated that central obesity (WHR ≥0.9) may be significantly associated with moderate or severe LUTS (OR 1.95, 95% CI 1.16-3.26). The associations between central obesity and straining (OR 2.44, 95% CI 1.40-4.24) and weak stream (OR 2.37, 95% CI 1.27-4.45) were significant after multivariate adjustment.
CONCLUSIONS: Males with central obesity are at increased risk of LUTS, and increased WHR is associated with worsened straining and weak stream. Further investigations are needed to confirm these associations.

BACKGROUND: The association between carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and high body mass index (BMI) and some hand measures is well known. No study has been specifically focused on waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip-ratio (WHR). The aim of this prospective case-control study is to evaluate the association between CTS and WC, WHR and other body and hand anthropometric measures.
METHODS: We consecutively enrolled one \"idiopathic\" CTS case for two controls in 3 outpatient electromyography labs. The main anthropometric measures were BMI, WC, WHR, wrist ratio (WR) and hand ratio (HR). We performed univariate and multivariate analyses.
RESULTS: Female cases and controls were 250 and 474 and male cases and controls were 120 and 273, respectively. At univariate analysis there were differences in many anthropometric measures between cases and controls. At multivariate logistic regression analyses high BMI, WC and WHR and abnormal HR and WR were independent risk factors for CTS. Crossing two categories between BMI, WC and WHR, the overweight subjects, especially females, were at risk only if they had very high WC or high WHR. The risk increased if they were obese.
CONCLUSIONS: High WC/WHR doubles the risk of CTS, the risk further increased if overweight/obese subjects have also very high WC or high WHR. The obese subjects were always at risk regardless of WC and WHR values. Metabolic causes of this association with CTS were hypothesised. BMI is not the only and most powerful body predictor of \"idiopathic\" CTS, but also WHR and WC should be considered. These measures may not be interchangeable and it may be desirable to consider the utility of their joint use.
