    This research aimed to examine the relationship between the intake of statins and the risk of post-stroke pneumonia in a systematic review and meta-analysis study.
    An extensive search of published articles on March 21st, 2023, was done in several databases, like Web of Science (ISI), PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) checklist was employed to evaluate the quality of observational studies. Statistical tests (Chi-square test and I2) and graphical techniques (Forest plot) were used to determine whether heterogeneity existed in the meta-analysis studies. Funnel plots and Begg and Egger\'s tests were used to assess the publication bias.
    Seven studies (5 cohort and 2 case-control studies) were retrieved to examine the association between statins and post-stroke pneumonia. The sample size of the studies compiled in the meta- analysis was obtained to be 68,966 participants. Meta-analysis demonstrated that the overall odds of post-stroke pneumonia in the statin group was equal to 0.87 (95% CI: 0.67 - 1.13; p-value 0.458). Subgroup analysis indicated that the odds of post-stroke pneumonia in the statin group was equal to 0.93 (95% CI: 0.73-1.18; p-value = 0.558) in the cohort studies, and equal to 0.92 (95% CI: 0.37-2.26; p-value = 0.857) in the case-control studies. The examination of the association between the intake of statins and post-stroke pneumonia showed no evidence of publication bias (Begg\'s test, p-value = 0.368; Eggers test, p-value = 0.282).
    In this study, no relationship has been observed between receiving statins and the risk of post-stroke pneumonia.

    Predicting stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) is crucial for intensifying preventive measures and decreasing morbidity and mortality. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the association between baseline neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with SAP and to determine the strength of the association.
    The Web of Science, SCOPUS, and PUBMED databases were searched to find eligible studies. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate the differences in NLR, MLR, and PLR levels between SAP and non-SAP patients. The meta-analysis was conducted using the software \"Review Manager\" (RevMan, version 5.4.1, September 2020). The random-effect model was used for the pooling analysis if there was substantial heterogeneity. Otherwise, the fixed-effect model was adopted.
    Twelve studies comprising 6302 stroke patients were included. The pooled analyses revealed that patients with SAP had significantly higher levels of NLR, MLR, and PLR than the non-SAP group. The SMD, 95% CI, p-value, and I2 for them were respectively reported as (0.88, 0.70-1.07, .00001, 77%); (0.94, 0.43-1.46, .0003, 93%); and (0.61, 0.47-0.75, .001, 0%). Subgroup analysis of NLR studies showed no significant differences in the effect size index between the severity of the stroke, the sample size, and the period between the stroke onset and the blood sampling.
    This systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that an elevated NLR, MLR, and PLR were associated with SAP, indicating that they could be promising blood-based biomarkers for predicting SAP. Large-scale prospective studies from various ethnicities are recommended to validate this association before they can be applied in clinical practice.

    Dysphagia is associated with increased risk of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP). However, it is unclear what other factors contribute to that risk or which measures may reduce it. This systematic review aimed to provide evidence on interventions and care processes associated with SAP in patients with dysphagia. Studies were screened for inclusion if they included dysphagia only patients, dysphagia and non-dysphagia patients or unselected patients that included dysphagic patients and evaluated factors associated with a recorded frequency of SAP. Electronic databases were searched from inception to February 2017. Eligible studies were critically appraised. Heterogeneity was evaluated using I2. The primary outcome was SAP. Eleven studies were included. Sample sizes ranged from 60 to 1088 patients. There was heterogeneity in study design. Measures of immunodepression are associated with SAP in dysphagic patients. There is insufficient evidence to justify screening for aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. Prophylactic antibiotics did not prevent SAP and proton pump inhibitors may increase risk. Treatment with metoclopramide may reduce SAP risk. Evidence that nasogastric tube (NGT) placement increases risk of SAP is equivocal. A multidisciplinary team approach and instrumental assessment of swallowing may reduce risk of pneumonia. Patients with impaired mobility were associated with increased risk. Findings should be interpreted with caution given the number of studies, heterogeneity and descriptive analyses. Several medical interventions and care processes, which may reduce risk of SAP in patients with dysphagia, have been identified. Further research is needed to evaluate the role of these interventions and care processes in clinical practice.

    Patients with dysphagia are at an increased risk of stroke-associated pneumonia. There is wide variation in the way patients are screened and assessed during the acute phase. The aim of this review was to identify the methods of assessment and management in acute stroke that influence the risk of stroke-associated pneumonia. Studies of stroke patients that reported dysphagia screening, assessment or management and occurrence of pneumonia during acute phase stroke were screened for inclusion after electronic searches of multiple databases from inception to November 2016. The primary outcome was association with stroke-associated pneumonia.
    Twelve studies of 87,824 patients were included. The type of dysphagia screening protocol varied widely across and within studies. There was limited information on what comprised a specialist swallow assessment and alternative feeding was the only management strategy, which was reported for association with stroke-associated pneumonia. Use of a formal screening protocol and early dysphagia screening (EDS) and assessment by a speech and language pathologist (SLP) were associated with a reduced risk of stroke-associated pneumonia. There was marked heterogeneity between the included studies, which precluded meta-analysis. Key Messages: There is variation in the assessment and management of dysphagia in acute stroke. There is increasing evidence that EDS and specialist swallow assessment by an SLP may reduce the odds of stroke-associated pneumonia. There is the potential for other factors to influence the incidence of stroke-associated pneumonia during the acute phase.
