    There is limited evidence regarding the effect of animation compared to static pictures on children\'s language development. The aim was to systematically review the available literature for evidence concerning the effect of brief animation on spoken language responses (receptive-listening or expressive-speaking) in typically developing (TD) children aged 3 to 9 years. Five databases were searched, resulting in seven included studies. The characteristics of animated stimuli, the manner of presentation, and the language-related tasks were recorded, and questions were posed about the effect of brief animation on children\'s receptive and expressive language abilities. The evidence suggests that animation may have a positive effect on expressive language abilities of children compared to static pictures. As far as the effect of animation on receptive language performance is concerned, the evidence is less concrete. Future directions regarding the potential of animation on language development are discussed.

    It is well known in the medical and pediatric feeding community how parental stress affects outcomes of pediatric nutrition and feeding behaviors. There is growing literature suggesting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to caregiver and child stress. It could be suggested that this increase in stress contributed to or exacerbated pediatric feeding difficulties. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in pediatric rehabilitation therapists quickly transitioning from in-person to virtual evaluation and treatment models. The purpose of this article is to review current literature regarding the definition and prevalence of pediatric feeding disorder, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parent/child stress and relationships surrounding feeding, and this speech-language pathologist\'s perception of both the positive and negative aspects of providing ongoing outpatient feeding evaluations and treatments in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as clinical considerations for ongoing feeding therapy after the COVID-19 pandemic.

    OBJECTIVE: An adult with vocal fold nodules can suffer from hoarseness, breathiness and vocal fatigue, which, in turn, significantly affects their vocal participation as well as activities. A well-designed voice therapy program improves the quality of life and vocal functionality. This is a narrative review with a systematic search of the current literature about the effectiveness of voice therapy interventions in adults with vocal fold nodules.
    METHODS: Several key terms were used for the database electronic search of articles. Strict inclusion criteria were used and a broad evaluation of the studies was performed. This included the level of evidence based on the National Health and Medical Research Council levels of evidence, assessment, and critical appraisal.
    RESULTS: Nine out of 30 reviewed articles met the criteria of inclusion and reported positive effects of voice therapy intervention on adult patients with vocal fold nodules. The vast majority of the reviewed studies reported multidimensional voice measures outcome data, most of them containing visual-perceptual, auditory-perceptual, acoustic and self-assessment results. Regardless of receiving direct or indirect or a combination of both voice therapy contents, nearly all voice quality parameters were found to improve after treatment. Short-term treatment (< 3 weeks) may be as beneficial as longer traditional voice therapy programs, and using telepractice voice therapy may be an achievable and practical way of delivering treatment and enhance adherence to therapy. The study design and the evidence levels of the included studies were low (≤ III-2) and the risk of bias of the comparative studies was moderate.
    CONCLUSIONS: This narrative review cannot conclude the general effectiveness of voice therapy programs. Further research and understanding of what specific parameters (exercise and techniques) of a therapy\'s content will improve voice outcome measures. More studies are required to investigate whether or not voice therapy benefits are sustainable 6 months after ending the therapy. However, improved evidence is required to suggest that short period treatments are as beneficial as traditional therapy programs. Telepractice voice therapy may be an achievable and practical way of delivering treatment and enhance adherence to therapy.

    The Frazier Free Water Protocol was developed with the aim of providing patients with dysphagia an option to consume thin (i.e. unthickened) water in-between mealtimes. A systematic review was conducted of research published in peer-reviewed journals. An electronic search of the EMBASE, CINAHL and MEDLINE databases was completed up to July 2016. A total of 8 studies were identified for inclusion: 5 randomised controlled trials, 2 cohort studies with matched cases and 1 single group pre-post intervention prospective study. A total of 215 rehabilitation inpatients and 30 acute patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia who required thickened fluids or were to remain \'nil by mouth\', as determined by bedside swallow assessment and/or videofluoroscopy/fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, were included. Meta-analyses of the data from the rehabilitation studies revealed (1) low-quality evidence that implementing the protocol did not result in increased odds of having lung complications and (2) low-quality evidence that fluid intake may increase. Patients\' perceptions of swallow-related quality of life appeared to improve. This review has found that when the protocol is closely adhered to and patients are carefully selected using strict exclusion criteria, including an evaluation of their cognition and mobility, adult rehabilitation inpatients with dysphagia to thin fluids can be offered the choice of implementing the Free Water Protocol. Further research is required to determine if the Free Water Protocol can be implemented in settings other than inpatient rehabilitation.

    BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary cognitive rehabilitation is emerging as the expected standard of care for individuals with mild to moderate degrees of cognitive impairment for a variety of etiologies. There is a growing body of evidence in cognitive rehabilitation literature supporting the involvement of multiple disciplines, with the use of cognitive support technologies (CSTs), in delivering cognitive therapy to individuals who require cognitive rehabilitative therapies. This article provides an overview of the guiding theories related to traditional approaches of cognitive rehabilitation and the positive impact of current theoretical models of an interdisciplinary approach in clinical service delivery of this rehabilitation.
    OBJECTIVE: A theoretical model of the Integrative Cognitive Rehabilitation Program (ICRP) will be described in detail along with the practical substrates of delivering specific interventions to individuals and caregivers who are living with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. The ultimate goal of this article is to provide a clinically useful resource for direct service providers. It will serve to further clinical knowledge and understanding of the evolution from traditional silo based treatment paradigms to the current implementation of multiple perspectives and disciplines in the pursuit of patient centered care.
    METHODS: The article will discuss the theories that contributed to the development of the interdisciplinary team and the ICRP model, implemented with individuals with mild to moderate cognitive deficits, regardless of etiology. The development and implementation of specific assessment and intervention strategies in this cognitive rehabilitation program will also be discussed.
    RESULTS: The assessment and intervention strategies utilized as part of ICRP are applicable to multiple clinical settings in which individuals with cognitive impairment are served.
    CONCLUSIONS: This article has specific implications for rehabilitation which include: (a) An Interdisciplinary Approach is an effective method for cognitive rehabilitation; and (b) Recent theories offer beneficial evaluation and intervention techniques for cognitive rehabilitation.
