    Oculomotor palsy with cyclic spasms is an extremely rare condition whose exact pathophysiology remains a mystery. We followed a boy from the onset of symptoms at the age of ten months until 15 years and documented the case with video oculography. In addition, he was diagnosed with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1). Although a pure coincidence cannot be ruled out, it is conceivable that the underlying demyelinating neuropathy of this patient rendered the oculomotor nerve more susceptible to damage.

    UNASSIGNED: Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rapidly progressing, life-threatening syndrome characterized by liver-related coagulopathy and hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Given that higher HE grades correlate with poorer outcomes, clinical management of ALF necessitates close neurological monitoring. The primary objective of this case report is to highlight the diagnostic value of utilizing multimodal neuromonitoring (MNM) in a patient suffering from ALF.
    UNASSIGNED: A 56-year-old male patient with a history of chronic alcoholism, without prior chronic liver disease, and recent acetaminophen use was admitted to the hospital due to fatigue and presenting with a mild flapping tremor. The primary hypothesis was an acute hepatic injury caused by acetaminophen intoxication. In the following hours, the patient\'s condition deteriorated, accompanied by neurological decline and rising ammonia levels. The patient\'s neurological status was closely monitored using MNM. Bilaterally altered pupillary light reflex assessed by decreasing in the Neurological Pupil Index values, using automated pupillometry, initially suggested severe brain oedema. However, ultrasound measurements of the optic nerve sheath diameter showed normal values in both eyes, P2/P1 noninvasive intracranial pressure waveform assessment was within normal ranges and the cerebral computed tomography-scan revealed no signs of cerebral swelling. Increased middle cerebral artery velocities measured by Transcranial Doppler and the initiation of electroencephalography monitoring yielded the presence of status epilepticus.
    UNASSIGNED: The utilization of MNM facilitated a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the patient\'s clinical deterioration in the setting of HE. Nonetheless, future studies are needed to show feasibility and to yield valuable insights that can enhance the outcomes for patients with HE using such an approach. Given the absence of specific guidelines in this particular context, it is advisable for physicians to give further consideration to the incorporation of MNM in the management of unconscious patients with ALF.

    The sport industry has never seen growth such as eSports\'. Using synchronized monitoring of two biological processes on a 25-year-old gamer, we investigated how his brain (via EEG) and eyes (via pupil dilation) interacted dynamically over time as an integrated network during NBA2K playing time. After the spectral decomposition of the different Brain and Eye signals into seven frequency bands, we calculated the bivariate equal-time Pearson\'s cross-correlation between each pair of EEG/Eye spectral power time series. On average, our results show a reorganization of the cortico-muscular network across three sessions (e.g., new interactions, hemispheric asymmetry). These preliminary findings highlight the potential need for individualized, specific, adaptive, and periodized interventions and encourage the continuation of this line of research for the creation of general theories of networks in eSports gaming. Future studies should recruit larger samples, investigate different games, and explore cross-frequency coordination among other key organ systems.

    Attenuated social attention is a key marker of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Recent neuroimaging findings also emphasize an altered processing of sensory salience in ASD. The locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system (LC-NE) has been established as a modulator of this sensory salience processing (SSP). We tested the hypothesis that altered LC-NE functioning contributes to different SSP and results in diverging social attention in ASD.
    We analyzed the baseline eye-tracking data of the EU-AIMS Longitudinal European Autism Project (LEAP) for subgroups of autistic participants (n = 166, age = 6-30 years, IQ = 61-138, gender [female/male] = 41/125) or neurotypical development (TD; n = 166, age = 6-30 years, IQ = 63-138, gender [female/male] = 49/117) that were matched for demographic variables and data quality. Participants watched brief movie scenes (k = 85) depicting humans in social situations (human) or without humans (non-human). SSP was estimated by gazes on physical and motion salience and a corresponding pupillary response that indexes phasic activity of the LC-NE. Social attention is estimated by gazes on faces via manual areas of interest definition. SSP is compared between groups and related to social attention by linear mixed models that consider temporal dynamics within scenes. Models are controlled for comorbid psychopathology, gaze behavior, and luminance.
    We found no group differences in gazes on salience, whereas pupillary responses were associated with altered gazes on physical and motion salience. In ASD compared to TD, we observed pupillary responses that were higher for non-human scenes and lower for human scenes. In ASD, we observed lower gazes on faces across the duration of the scenes. Crucially, this different social attention was influenced by gazes on physical salience and moderated by pupillary responses.
    The naturalistic study design precluded experimental manipulations and stimulus control, while effect sizes were small to moderate. Covariate effects of age and IQ indicate that the findings differ between age and developmental subgroups.
    Pupillary responses as a proxy of LC-NE phasic activity during visual attention are suggested to modulate sensory salience processing and contribute to attenuated social attention in ASD.

    We investigated whether pupil size can variate with the intensity of cognitive processing in patients with behavioral-variant-Frontotemporal-Dementia (bvFTD). We invited five bvFTD participants and 21 controls to perform forward spans and backward spans, and, in a control condition, to count aloud. We recorded pupil activity using eye-tracking-glasses during the spans and control condition. Analysis demonstrated larger pupil sizes during backward spans than during forward spans, and larger pupil sizes during forward spans than during counting in both bvFTD and control participants. These findings demonstrate how increased cognitive load triggers increased pupil size and how this connection is maintained in bvFTD.

    We investigate whether retrograde-amnesia can be indexed with pupil activity. We present the case of L, 19-year-old, without neurological or psychiatric disorders except for retrograde-amnesia. We invited L to retrieve retrograde and anterograde memories while his pupil size was monitering with eye-tracking glasses. Results demonstrated impaired retrograde retrieval but successful anterograde retrieval in L. He also attributed lower emotional value and visual imagery to his retrograde compared to his anterograde memories. Critically, smaller pupils were observed during retrograde than during anterograde retrieval. Our study provides the first evidence on the value of pupillometry as a potential physiological marker of amnesia.
