The unique requirements of shift work, such as sleeping and working at variable times, mean that current sleep hygiene guidelines may be inappropriate for shift workers. Current guidelines may also contradict fatigue management advice (e.g. advising against daytime napping). The present study utilized a Delphi methodology to determine expert opinion regarding the applicability of current guidelines for shift workers, the appropriateness of the term \"sleep hygiene,\" and develop tailored guidelines for shift workers.
The research team reviewed current guidelines and existing evidence to draft tailored guidelines. Seventeen individual guidelines, covering sleep scheduling, napping, sleep environment, bedtime routine, substances, light exposure, diet, and exercise were drafted. Experts from sleep, shift work, and occupational health fields (n = 155) were invited to review the draft guidelines using a Delphi methodology. In each round, experts voted on individual guidelines, with 70% agreement considered consensus. Where consensus was not reached, written feedback from experts was discussed and incorporated into subsequent iterations.
Of the experts invited, 68 (44%) agreed to participate, with 55 (35%) completing the third (final) round. Most experts (84%) agreed that tailored guidelines were required for shift workers. Consensus was reached on all guidelines after three rounds. One additional guideline (sleep inertia) and an introductory statement were developed, resulting in a final set of 18 individual guidelines, termed \"healthy sleep practices for shift workers.\"
This is the first study to develop tailored sleep hygiene guidelines for shift workers. Future research should investigate the acceptability and effectiveness of these guidelines amongst shift workers.

Little is known on the nutritional and lifestyle variables of preschool children in Oman. This study analyzed data of the 2017 Oman National Nutrition Survey to assess the prevalence and interrelationships between dietary and movement variables among preschool children, aged 2-5 years.
Household visits of a nationally representative sample evaluated mothers and children\'s dietary, sleep and physical activity practices; media exposure; and anthropometric and sociodemographic variables.
Dyads of mothers and pre-school children aged 2-5 years (n = 1771) were assessed. Childhood overweight/obesity was prevalent in 2% of the sample. Over 54% of children consumed sweetened items and/or French fries or chips at least once daily. Over 65% of children had fruits and/or vegetables once daily or less. Mothers had healthier dietary and movement habits compared to their offspring. Compliance with media exposure was the lowest among mothers and children. Multivariate regression revealed children\'s increased sweet intake was the only significant predictor of excess weight in children.
This study revealed a low prevalence of overweight/obesity among preschool children in Oman. Children had an acceptable compliance with sleeping recommendations, yet limited adherence to media exposure, activity, added sugar and fruits and vegetables guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Sleep quality, quantity and timing have been shown to impact glycaemic control, with a role in insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance and HbA1C levels, in both diabetic and non-diabetic populations. The aim of this study was to identify recommendations for sleep assessment and management in international clinical practice guidelines focused on type 2 diabetes mellitus management in adults.
    METHODS: Systematic Review.
METHODS: Clinical practice guidelines which focused on the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults were included (n = 35). Two independent reviewers utilised the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation tool (AGREE) II and a third reviewer resolved any disagreements. Included guidelines were assessed for recommendations about sleep in diabetes management (n = 14). Data were extracted on sleep recommendations ,themes were generated from the extracted data and narrative syntheses were created.
RESULTS: From 1114 identified papers, 35 guidelines met the inclusion criteria. Fourteen of these guidelines included recommendations pertaining to sleep, which broadly fell into five categories; sleep assessment, sleep as a therapeutic target, sleep and co-morbidities of type 2 diabetes mellitus, shift work and sleep and driving. Recommendations varied across guidelines.
CONCLUSIONS: Few guidelines provided recommendations relating to assessment and management of sleep in type 2 diabetes care. Most of the recommendations were related to obstructive sleep apnoea. However, few guidelines discussed sleep as a therapeutic intervention for diabetes mellitus or described the potential importance of sleep quality and duration in glycaemic control. Sleep is an important determinant of collegiate athlete health, well-being and performance. However, collegiate athlete social and physical environments are often not conducive to obtaining restorative sleep. Traditionally, sleep has not been a primary focus of collegiate athletic training and is neglected due to competing academic, athletic and social demands. Collegiate athletics departments are well positioned to facilitate better sleep culture for their athletes. Recognising the lack of evidence-based or consensus-based guidelines for sleep management and restorative sleep for collegiate athletes, the National Collegiate Athletic Association hosted a sleep summit in 2017. Members of the Interassociation Task Force on Sleep and Wellness reviewed current data related to collegiate athlete sleep and aimed to develop consensus recommendations on sleep management and restorative sleep using the Delphi method. In this paper, we provide a narrative review of four topics central to collegiate athlete sleep: (1) sleep patterns and disorders among collegiate athletes; (2) sleep and optimal functioning among athletes; (3) screening, tracking and assessment of athlete sleep; and (4) interventions to improve sleep. We also present five consensus recommendations for colleges to improve their athletes\' sleep.

To explore factors that influence parental behaviors related to newborn sleep positions and environments in the home after hospital discharge.
A descriptive qualitative study conducted by telephone.
A 290-bed academic teaching hospital in an urban setting with a Level 3 perinatal center and approximately 4,500 births per year.
Participants (N = 60) were recruited from the patient population of the mother-baby unit. All participants were scheduled to be discharged simultaneously with their newborns.
Qualitative interviews with grand tour-style questions were conducted by telephone. An inductive analysis process was used to identify themes and meaning.
Participants described three consistent factors that influenced how the newborn slept at home. The most frequently mentioned influence was Other People followed by Nobody/No One and Images from sources such as books, pictures, television, and the Internet.
New parents need education about the rationale for the safe sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as well as knowledge of the potential harm of behaviors such as bed sharing and prone or side-lying positions for sleeping. The images to which parents are exposed send mixed messages. Health care professionals should portray safe sleep for infants in media, marketing materials, and other graphic representations. Nurses should help parents understand the AAP\'s recommendations for safe sleep position and environment for infants so that they can become advocates for their newborns\' well-being.
