    Arsenic trioxide (ATO) is expected to be a chemical drug with antitumor activity against acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a type of acute myeloid leukemia. In Japan, its antitumor effects were confirmed in clinical trials for APL, and it has been approved in various countries around the world. However, there have been no reports on ATO\'s antitumor effects on radioresistant leukemia cells, which can be developed during radiotherapy and in combination with therapeutic radiation beams. The present study sought to clarify the antitumor effect of ATO on APL cells with radiation resistance and determine its efficacy when combined with ionizing radiation (IR). The radiation‑resistant HL60 (Res‑HL60) cell line was generated by subjecting the native cells to 4‑Gy irradiation every week for 4 weeks. The half‑maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for cell proliferation by ATO on native cell was 0.87 µM (R2=0.67), while the IC50 for cell proliferation by ATO on Res‑HL60 was 2.24 µM (R2=0.91). IR exposure increased the sub‑G1 and G2/M phase ratios in both cell lines. The addition of ATO resulted in a higher population of G2/M after 24 h rather than 48 h. When the rate of change in the sub‑G1 phase was examined in greater detail, the sub‑G1 phase in both control cells without ATO significantly increased by exposure to IR at 24 h, but only under the condition of 2 Gy irradiation, it had continued to increase at 48 h. Res‑HL60 supplemented with ATO showed a higher rate of sub‑G1 change at 24 h; however, 2 Gy irradiation resulted in a decrease compared with the control. There was a significant increase in the ratio of the G2/M phase in cells after incubation with ATO for 24 h, and exposure to 2 Gy irradiation caused an even greater increase. To determine whether the inhibition of cell proliferation and cell cycle disruptions is related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity, intracellular ROS levels were measured with a flow cytometric assay. Although the ROS levels of Res‑HL60 were higher than those of native cells in the absence of irradiation, they did not change after 0.5 or 2 Gy irradiation. Furthermore, adding ATO to Res‑HL60 reduced intracellular ROS levels. These findings provide important information that radioresistant leukemia cells respond differently to the antitumor effect of ATO and the combined effect of IR.

Optimizing interconnector structures is crucial for SOFC advancement. This paper introduces a novel 2D simulation model for interconnector SOFCs, aiming to enhance their performance. We initially construct a single half-cell model for a conventional interconnector SOFC, ensuring model accuracy. Subsequently, we propose an innovative interconnector SOFC model, which outperforms the conventional counterpart in various aspects.

    OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the factors that determine the success of direct pulp capping (DPC) in permanent teeth with pulp exposure due to dental caries.
    METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search from 1980 to 2023 across PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web databases was conducted using specific keywords and MeSH terms in Q1 or Q2 journals. Only prospective/retrospective clinical studies in English on 15 or more human permanent teeth with carious pulpal exposure treated with DPC agents-mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine, or calcium hydroxide with a rubber dam and minimum 1-year follow-up, were considered. The factors retrieved and analyzed were based on study design, patient age, sample size, type of cavity, exposure size and location, pulp diagnosis, solutions to achieve hemostasis, hemostasis time, capping material, restoration type, follow-up period, methods of evaluation, and overall success.
    RESULTS: Out of 680 articles, only 16 articles were selected for the present systematic review on application of the selection criteria. A wide age range of patients from 6 to 88 years were considered among these studies with sample sizes ranging from 15 to 245 teeth with reversible pulpitis being the predominant diagnosis of the cases. Mineral trioxide aggregate as a capping material was evaluated in 4 studies as a lone agent, while compared with other capping agents such as biodentine or calcium hydroxide in 7 studies. The follow-up period ranged from 9 days to nearly 80 months. While both clinical and radiographic evaluation was carried out in all studies, cold testing dominated the clinical tests while IOPR was the common radiograph considered. Mineral trioxide aggregate success rate was higher and similar to biodentine than calcium hydroxide.
    CONCLUSIONS: Direct pulp capping has a high and predictable success rate in permanent teeth with carious exposure to reversible and irreversible pulpitis. Currently, mineral trioxide aggregate and biodentine have better long-term results in DPC than calcium hydroxide, hence, they should be used as an alternative to calcium hydroxide. Definitive restoration within a short period improves long-term prognosis.
    CONCLUSIONS: The significance of this review lies in its provision of evidence-based information on the effectiveness of DPC and the factors that influence its success. By considering these factors, clinicians can optimize treatment outcomes and improve the long-term prognosis of the treated teeth.     OBJECTIVE: This investigation aimed to observe the effects of Dycal, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), and TheraCal LC, as indirect pulp-capping materials in primary molars.
    METHODS: About 75 children with lower primary molars aged between 4 and 7 years suggested for IPC were selected and randomly allocated into: Group I - Dycal, group II - MTA, and group III - TheraCal LC. An immediate postoperative radiograph was taken after the procedure. Recall examination was done after 3 and 6 months for clinical and radiographic assessment. The radiographs were digitized, and the amount of thickness of dentin was assessed using Corel Draw software. The values were tabulated and subjected to paired t-tests and independent t-tests for intra and intergroup analysis, respectively. The p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
    RESULTS: There was a statistically significant increase in dentin thickness in the first 3 months compared to the 6-month follow-up. At the end of the research phase, TheraCal LC had more tertiary dentin deposited than MTA, followed by Dycal.
    CONCLUSIONS: TheraCal LC can be a reliable indirect pulp-capping agent in primary teeth.
    CONCLUSIONS: Indirect pulp capping (IPC) is a very extensively employed treatment regimen to manage extensive caries. For many decades, calcium hydroxide has been regarded as the benchmark of pulp capping materials. With several advancements in materials for restoration, TheraCal LC a resin-modified, light-cured calcium silicate-filled liner serves as a pulp-capping agent and dentin protector, promoting pulp healing and preserving vitality as an obstacle cum protector of the dental pulp complex.     A cancer-targeted glutathione (GSH)-gated theranostic probe (CGT probe) for intracellular miRNA imaging and combined treatment of self-sufficient starvation therapy (ST) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) was developed. The CGT probe is constructed using MnO2 nanosheet (MS) as carrier material to adsorb the elaborately designed functional DNAs. It can be internalized by cancer cells via specific recognition between the AS1411 aptamer and nucleolin. After CGT probe entering the cancer cells, the overexpressed GSH, as gate-control, can degrade MS to Mn2+ which can be used for CDT by Fenton-like reaction. Simultaneously, Mn2+-mediated CDT can further cascade with the enzyme-like activities (catalase-like activity and glucose oxidase-like activity) of CGT probe, achieving self-sufficient ST/CDT synergistic therapy. Meanwhile, the anchored DNAs are released, achieving in situ signal amplification via disubstituted-catalytic hairpin assembly (DCHA) and FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) imaging of miR-21. The in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that accurate and sensitive miRNA detection can be achieved using the CGT probe. Overall, the ingenious CGT probe opens a new avenue for the development of early clinical diagnosis and cancer therapy.

    In this work, core and core-shell microparticles formed by Ni-Mn-Co oxides with controlled composition were fabricated by an oxalate-assisted co-precipitation route, and their properties were analysed by diverse microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. The microparticles exhibit dimensions within the 2-6 μm range and mainly consist of NiO and NiMn2O4, the latter being promoted as the temperature of the treatment increases, especially in the shell region of the microparticles. Aspects such as the shell dimensions, the vibrational modes of the spinel compounds primarily observed in the shell region, the oxidation states of the cations at the surface of the microparticles, and the achievement of a Ni-rich 811 core and a Mn-rich 631 shell were thoroughly evaluated and discussed in this work.

    In this work, we synthesized and confirmed the structure of several alkaloid N-oxides using mass spectrometry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. We also investigated their reduction mechanisms using voltammetry. For the first time, we obtained alkaloid N-oxides using an oxidation reaction with potassium peroxymonosulfate as an oxidant. The structure was established based on the obtained fragmentation mass spectra recorded by LC-Q-ToF-MS. In the FT-IR spectra of the alkaloid N-oxides, characteristic signals of N-O group vibrations were recorded (bands in the range of 928 cm⁻1 to 971 cm⁻1), confirming the presence of this functional group. Electrochemical reduction studies demonstrated the reduction of alkaloid N-oxides at mercury-based electrodes back to the original form of the alkaloid. For the first time, the products of the electrochemical reduction of alkaloid N-oxides were detected by mass spectrometry. The findings provide insights into the structural characteristics and reduction behaviors of alkaloid N-oxides, offering implications for pharmacological and biochemical applications. This research contributes to a better understanding of alkaloid metabolism and degradation processes, with potential implications for drug development and environmental science.

    Background and Objectives: In teeth with open apices, performing single session apexification is a challenging treatment due to the difficulty in handling mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Minimally invasive approaches in dentistry have also influenced the cavity designs in endodontics. Until now, different techniques have not been investigated in addition to manual condensation during the process of placing MTA in traditional (TradACs) or conservative (ConsACs) endodontic access cavities. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare and evaluate the obturation quality of MTA apical plugs placed with different techniques in TradACs or ConsACs. Materials and Methods: Sixty upper central teeth were divided into two main groups based on cavity design, and then each main group was further divided into three subgroups according to MTA placement techniques (n = 10): TradAC-manual, TradAC-manual + indirect ultrasonic activation, TradAC-manual + XP-endo Shaper (XPS), ConsAC-manual, ConsAC-manual + indirect ultrasonic activation, and ConsAC-manual + XPS. Subsequently, the porosity percentages in the MTA apical plug were analyzed using micro-computed tomography. The statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: There were differences in volume of porosity percentages (%) according to cavity designs and MTA application techniques (p < 0.05). Except for the XPS group, more porosity was observed in ConsACs compared to TradACs. In TradACs, the significantly lowest open and total porosity was observed in the manual, ultrasonic, and XPS techniques, respectively. In ConsACs, the significantly lowest porosity was observed in the manual, XPS, and ultrasonic techniques, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In MTA obturation, cavity designs and application techniques had an impact on the MTA porosity. Creating an apical plug in ConsACs may result in more porosity compared to TradACs, especially when manual or indirect ultrasonic activation is preferred. Opting for the manual technique alone may be considered sufficient for controlling porosity for both TradACs and ConsACs.

    Polyurethane/silk protein-bismuth halide oxide composite films were fabricated using a blending-wet phase transformationin situsynthesis method. The crystal structure, micromorphology, and optical properties were conducted using XRD, SEM, and UV-Vis DRS characterize techniques. The results indicated that loaded silk protein enhanced the hydrophilicity and pore structure of the polyurethane composite films. The active species BiOX were observed to grow as nanosheets with high dispersion on the internal skeleton and silk protein surface of the polyurethane-silk protein film. The photocatalytic efficiency of BiOX/PU-SF composite films was assessed through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. Among the tested films, the BiOBr/PU-SF composite exhibited the highest removal rate of RhB at 98.9%, surpassing the removal rates of 93.7% for the BiOCl/PU-SF composite and 85.6% for the BiOI/PU-SF composite. Furthermore, an active species capture test indicated that superoxide radical (•O2-) and hole (h+) species played a predominant role in the photodegradation process.

    A tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive nanoprobe composed of a fluorescent dye-decorated silicon (Si) nanosphere core and a thin MnO2 shell is proposed for simple and intelligent detection of cancer cells. The Si nanosphere core with diameters of 100-200 nm provides environment-independent Mie scattering imaging, while, simultaneously, the MnO2 shell provides the capability to switch the on/off state of the dye fluorescence reacted to the glutathione (GSH) and/or H2O2 levels in a cancer cell. Si-MnO2 core-shell nanosphere probes are fabricated in a solution-based process from crystalline Si nanosphere cores. The fluorescence switching under exposure to GSH is demonstrated, and the mechanism is discussed based on detailed optical characterizations including single-particle spectroscopy. Different types of human cells are incubated with the nanoprobes, and a proof of concept experiment is performed. From the combination of the robust scattering images and GSH- and H2O2-sensitive fluorescence images, the feasibility of cancer cell detection by the multimodal nanoprobes is demonstrated.
