    Sharing a passion for the advancement of the discipline, the scientific community provides an authentic environment for new members to acquire the knowledge and develop the professional identity needed for their future careers. Supporting opportunities for higher education students to participate in this community can complement their classroom-based education and be extremely beneficial to their learning. Situated in the authentic environment of the scientific community, conferences are organized events where professionals meet to advance their discipline, and which have been shown to provide unique learning opportunities for university students. Here we present a modular framework created to support Imperial College London\'s Master of Science in Immunology students\' attendance at the British Society for Immunology Annual Congress. The module\'s evaluation indicates an overall students\' satisfaction with the content, organization, teaching, assessment, feedback and community aspects of the framework and draws attention to areas of potential improvements. Furthermore, the data emphasize the importance of preconference preparation, of academic mentoring and discusses the role of peer support. Finally, the data highlight the benefits for students of discovering the true breadth and depth of their discipline, of interacting with members of the community and how these contribute to the development of their professional identity.

    OBJECTIVE: Research has demonstrated negative environmental impacts from in-person conferences. Nonetheless, there are benefits to in-person meetings. The 2023 American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) meeting was mostly attended in-person. To understand the environmental impact, this study quantifies the travel emissions generated from that meeting.
    METHODS: The 2023 APSA meeting was held in Orlando, FL. Using a de-identified list of attendees, the distance between the attendee\'s home city and Orlando was determined. If ≤ 200 miles, it was assumed the attendee drove. If > 200 miles, the distance between the closest airport and Orlando International Airport was determined. Travel emissions factors represent emissions per person-mile traveled. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Inventory emissions factors for carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) were multiplied by travel distances to determine the emissions generated from each attendee. These were aggregated to determine the total meeting travel emissions. The EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator was used to convert the emissions to a relatable outcome.
    RESULTS: There were 757 in-person and 135 virtual attendees. Fifty attendees drove and 707 attendees flew. This generated 267,279 kg CO2, 1222 gm CH4, and 8486 gm N2O; equivalent to the emissions generated from the average annual use of 60 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles in the United States.
    CONCLUSIONS: Based on attendance to the 2023 APSA meeting, there is a preference for meeting in-person, though the associated environmental cost should be recognized. Based on these results, APSA should consider strategies to mitigate the environmental impact of its annual meeting.

    All aerobic life on Earth depends on oxygenic photosynthesis, occurring in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. This process can be divided into light reactions and carbon fixation. This special issue is a result of the International Conference on \"Photosynthesis and Hydrogen Energy Research for Sustainability 2023,\" held in honor of Robert Blankenship, Győző Garab, Michael Grätzel, Norman Hüner, and Gunnar Öquist. After extensive discussions on various aspects of photosynthesis and hydrogen energy, eight high-quality papers were selected. These papers cover studies on abiotic stress, an overview of photosynthesis, thylakoid membrane lipid organization, energy transfer, and the genomics of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic photosynthesis, as well as biohydrogen production from cyanobacteria. The authors used new methods and techniques, likely bringing fresh ideas for improving biomass and crop yield.

    BACKGROUND: Shortage in nursing resource results from the combination of a lack of nurses, an increased patient volume and workload, and other factors. This seems to be a worldwide phenomenon, leading to multiple health care related challenges and a decreased quality of care, but is different in extent in high- vs. low-income countries. An international perspective can alleviate challenges to keep our patients safe through increasing our health workers\' safety.
    UNASSIGNED: To exchange experiences with the shortage in nursing resource globally, an international online conference event was hosted. Speakers from Germany, the Philippines, Poland, Tanzania, the United Kingdom and the United States presented their national challenges and strategies to deal with this phenomenon.
    RESULTS: Conference presentations included information about the health care systems, comparable numbers of hospital beds, nurses, and nursing education. Speakers reported challenges such as an imbalance between a high nurse vacancy rate and demands, but also war and refugees, high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infection rates, or nurses\' migration to other countries; the solutions reported included buy-in from other countries, nurses-attracting projects such as Magnet hospitals, improved job opportunities like higher wages, career prospects, or improved education, and others.
    CONCLUSIONS: Shortage in nursing resource seems to be a global phenomenon. Nursing managers and researchers should exchange and communicate challenges and solutions continuously and cooperate globally.

    BACKGROUND: Every year, German-speaking experts in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery gather to discuss the latest developments at Germany\'s largest conference for plastic surgery, the joint annual meeting of the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (DGPRÄC) and the Association of German Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (VDÄPC). Since the topics of the conference have a lasting impact on the practice and research of plastic surgery, an examination of the presented content provides insight into the driving developments in plastic surgery in Germany.
    METHODS: We conducted a retrospective network analysis of all abstract titles from the DGPRÄC and VDÄPC annual meeting in 2023. Data were extracted regarding titles, language, author, and place of origin, and the titles were categorized into the four pillars of the specialty. The titles were standardized and subjected to network analysis.
    RESULTS: A total of 299 titles from 281 lectures and 18 instructional courses were analyzed. After preprocessing the data, 2463 words with 9384 connections qualified for network analysis. The most frequently mentioned keywords throughout the congress were \'Surgery\', \'Breast\', \'Reconstruction\', \'Flap\', \'Patient\', \'Tissue\', and \'Therapy\'. Locations contributing the highest number of abstracts were Ludwigshafen, Hanover, Leipzig, and Munich.
    CONCLUSIONS: In the era of big data, network analysis provides the ability to identify underlying structures and nodes in multidimensional, complex datasets. This study demonstrates the useful application of network analysis to identify thematic focuses and connections at the current DGPRÄC and VDÄPC annual meeting. Sites of intensified research could thus be identified.

    The field of public health informatics has undergone significant evolution in recent years, and advancements in technology and its applications are imperative to address emerging public health challenges. Interdisciplinary approaches and training can assist with these challenges. In 2023, the inaugural Public Health Informatics and Technology (PHIAT) Conference was established as a hybrid 3-day conference at the University of California, San Diego, and online. The conference\'s goal was to establish a forum for academics and public health organizations to discuss and tackle new opportunities and challenges in public health informatics and technology. This paper provides an overview of the quest for interest, speakers and topics, evaluations from the attendees, and lessons learned to be implemented in future conferences.
