    UNASSIGNED: This study investigates the relationship between ciliary muscle dynamics, thickness, and the regulation of intraocular pressure (IOP), focusing on the progression of cataracts and changes post-phacoemulsification. It explores how these factors impact canine ocular health, particularly in the context of cataract development and subsequent surgical intervention.
    UNASSIGNED: Data was collected using Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) from dogs at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungbuk National University, Korea. The study involved 57 eyes from 35 dogs, categorized into five groups: 13 normal eyes, 14 with incipient cataracts, 12 with immature cataracts, 6 with mature cataracts, and 12 post-phacoemulsification. UBM measurements assessed various ciliary muscle parameters including ciliary body axial length (CBAXL), ciliary process-sclera angle (CPSA), longitudinal fibers of ciliary muscle thickness (Lf-CMT), and longitudinal and radial fibers of ciliary muscle thickness (LRf-CMT).
    UNASSIGNED: Findings indicated a decrease in CBAXL and an increase in Lf-CMT as cataracts progressed in severity. Post-phacoemulsification, there was a notable increase in CBAXL and a decrease in CPSA, Lf-CMT, and LRf-CMT, compared to both cataractous and normal eyes. Regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between CBAXL and IOP, alongside a negative association between Lf-CMT and IOP. These findings suggest that variations in ciliary muscle dynamics and thickness, as influenced by cataract progression and phacoemulsification, have distinct impacts on intraocular pressure.

    UNASSIGNED: Glaucoma is one of the most serious complications that causes irreversible blindness after phacoemulsification in dogs; however, a clear mechanism has not been elucidated. This study aimed to analyse the possible anatomical factors associated with glaucoma after phacoemulsification using parameters that reflect the anatomical characteristics of dogs.
    UNASSIGNED: A total of 69 eyes of 48 dogs were included in this study. The patients were divided into three groups: normal eye (n = 18), cataract (n = 39), and post-phacoemulsification for at least 2 months after surgery (post-phaco, n = 12). For further analysis, the dogs were subdivided into two groups according to cataract stage: phacoemulsification non-candidate and candidate groups. Non-cataracts and incipient cataracts were categorized into the non-candidate group, whereas immature and mature cataracts were categorized into the candidate group. Measurements of the ciliary cleft parameters, including the area of the ciliary cleft (CCA), length of the ciliary cleft (CCL), width of the ciliary cleft (CCW), iridocorneal angle, and angle opening distance, were obtained using ultrasound biomicroscopy.
    UNASSIGNED: CCA, CCL, and CCW were significantly higher in the candidate group than in the non-candidate group. CCA, CCL, and CCW were significantly reduced in the post-phaco group compared to those in the cataract group. Based on these results, we found that the ciliary cleft expanded in cataract-affected eyes and narrowed after phacoemulsification. This may indicate that the space between the trabecular meshworks became narrower, potentially leading to an increase in the resistance of the aqueous humor.
    UNASSIGNED: A narrowed ciliary cleft after phacoemulsification may be an anatomical factor associated with glaucoma.

    The objective was to assess the effect of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) on intraocular pressure (IOP) in dogs with primary glaucoma (PG). Seven dogs (13 eyes) presenting with PG as diagnosed by a raised IOP (> 20 mm Hg) associated with consistent gonioscopy and ultrasound biomicroscopy of the ciliary cleft, with no other ocular disease. Patients were divided into 3 groups, corresponding to their pre-operative IOP (group 1 ranging from 21 to 30 mm Hg, group 2 from 31 to 40 and group 3 for 40 and above). Ciliary process sonication was achieved with a probe containing one high-frequency transducer operating at 21 MHz during 5 seconds. Six sites were treated in patients from group 1, 8 in group 2, 10 in group 3, under general anesthesia. Post-operative treatment consisted of systemic meloxicam and topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, beta-blockers and prostaglandins analogues. No intraoperative complications were observed. Conjunctival hyperaemia occurred in eyes from group 2 (66%) and 3 (100%). Conjunctival burns were visible in 2 patients from group 3. One patient from group 3 experienced a hypertensive spike during the first hours post-op with associated pain. The hypotensive effect of HIFU was observed in all groups. Normotensive IOP (≤20 mm Hg) was reached in all patients until the last recheck at 6 months post op. Despite the small number of patients included in the study, HIFU appears to be a promising option for the management of PG in dogs.

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and tonometry in pigeons and to provide biometric reference ranges for normal pigeon eyes.
    METHODS: Ten pigeons (Columba livia var. domestica) with ophthalmologically normal eyes.
    METHODS: Ophthalmic examinations, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy and tonometry, were performed to confirm that the eyes were normal. UBM was then performed on the left eye. On each obtained image, the ciliary cleft (CC) length, CC width, and CC area, and iridocorneal angle (ICA) were measured.
    RESULTS: Richly vascularized iris was observed in all pigeon eyes. Mean intraocular pressure was 11.7 ± 1.6 mmHg, without any statistical difference between the left and right eyes. The UBM scanning procedure was well tolerated in all pigeons. Mean values of CC length, CC width, CC area, and ICA were 1.55 ± 0.17 mm, 0.36 ± 0.05 mm, 0.39 ± 0.04 mm2 , and 15.17 ± 1.06°, respectively.
    CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound biomicroscopy could be a useful diagnostic tool to evaluate anterior ocular segment of pigeons.

    OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of topical latanoprost on the anterior segment and ciliary body using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in dogs.
    METHODS: This study included six eyes of six clinically normal beagles.
    METHODS: UBM scans were performed on six sedated dogs before and 2 h after topical latanoprost instillation. From the next day on, latanoprost was topically applied twice daily for 7 days. After 1 week of instillation, the UBM scans were repeated. The ciliary body thickness (CBT) and the anterior segment parameters, including the iridocorneal angle (ICA), the width of the ciliary cleft (CC) entry, the length of the CC, and the width of the mid-CC, were measured.
    RESULTS: The topical latanoprost decreased the ICA and CC entry width and increased the mid-CC width without any significant alterations in the CC length. There were time-dependent alterations in the CBT: a reduction in the CBT after 2 h of instillation and rebound thickening after 1 week of instillation.
    CONCLUSIONS: The topical latanoprost widened the ciliary cleft despite the narrowing of the ICA and CC entry. Time-dependent alterations in the CBT were demonstrated by the UBM and might be a reflection of the mechanism of the uveoscleral outflow enhancement induced by the topical latanoprost.
