    Multiple testing has been a prominent topic in statistical research. Despite extensive work in this area, controlling false discoveries remains a challenging task, especially when the test statistics exhibit dependence. Various methods have been proposed to estimate the false discovery proportion (FDP) under arbitrary dependencies among the test statistics. One key approach is to transform arbitrary dependence into weak dependence and subsequently establish the strong consistency of FDP and false discovery rate under weak dependence. As a result, FDPs converge to the same asymptotic limit within the framework of weak dependence. However, we have observed that the asymptotic variance of FDP can be significantly influenced by the dependence structure of the test statistics, even when they exhibit only weak dependence. Quantifying this variability is of great practical importance, as it serves as an indicator of the quality of FDP estimation from the data. To the best of our knowledge, there is limited research on this aspect in the literature. In this paper, we aim to fill in this gap by quantifying the variation of FDP, assuming that the test statistics exhibit weak dependence and follow normal distributions. We begin by deriving the asymptotic expansion of the FDP and subsequently investigate how the asymptotic variance of the FDP is influenced by different dependence structures. Based on the insights gained from this study, we recommend that in multiple testing procedures utilizing FDP, reporting both the mean and variance estimates of FDP can provide a more comprehensive assessment of the study\'s outcomes.

    The paper provides a precise error estimate for an asymptotic expansion of a certain stochastic control problem related to relative entropy minimization. In particular, it is shown that the expansion error depends on the regularity of functionals on path space. An efficient numerical scheme based on a weak approximation with Monte Carlo simulation is employed to implement the asymptotic expansion in multidimensional settings. Throughout numerical experiments, it is confirmed that the approximation error of the proposed scheme is consistent with the theoretical rate of convergence.

    Neurosecretory cells spatially redistribute their pool of secretory vesicles upon stimulation. Recent observations suggest that in chromaffin cells vesicles move either freely or in a directed fashion by what appears to be a conveyor belt mechanism. We suggest that this observation reflects the transient active transport through molecular motors along cytoskeleton fibres and quantify this effect using a 1D mathematical model that couples a diffusion equation to advection equations. In agreement with recent observations the model predicts that random motion dominates towards the cell centre whereas directed motion prevails in the region abutting the cortical membrane. Furthermore the model explains the observed bias of directed transport towards the periphery upon stimulation. Our model suggests that even if vesicle transport is indifferent with respect to direction, stimulation creates a gradient of free vesicles at first and this triggers the bias of transport in forward direction. Using matched asymptotic expansion we derive an approximate drift-diffusion type model that is capable of quantifying this effect. Based on this model we compute the characteristic time for the system to adapt to stimulation and we identify a Michaelis-Menten-type law describing the flux of vesicles entering the pathway to exocytosis.

    In this paper, we consider the Rasch model and suggest novel point estimators and confidence intervals for the ability parameter. They are based on a proposed confidence distribution (CD) whose construction has required to overcome some difficulties essentially due to the discrete nature of the model. When the number of items is large, the computations due to the combinatorics involved become heavy, and thus, we provide first- and second-order approximations of the CD. Simulation studies show the good behavior of our estimators and intervals when compared with those obtained through other standard frequentist and weakly informative Bayesian procedures. Finally, using the expansion of the expected length of the suggested interval, we are able to identify reasonable values of the sample size which lead to a desired length of the interval.

    We prove that, for asymptotically bounded holomorphic functions in a sector in C , an asymptotic expansion in a single direction towards the vertex with constraints in terms of a logarithmically convex sequence admitting a nonzero proximate order entails asymptotic expansion in the whole sector with control in terms of the same sequence. This generalizes a result by Fruchard and Zhang for Gevrey asymptotic expansions, and the proof strongly rests on a suitably refined version of the classical Phragmén-Lindelöf theorem, here obtained for functions whose growth in a sector is specified by a nonzero proximate order in the sense of Lindelöf and Valiron.

    We consider transverse propagation of electromagnetic waves through a two-dimensional composite material containing a periodic rectangular array of circular cylinders. Propagation of waves is described by the Helmholtz equation with the continuity conditions for the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields on the boundaries of the cylinders. We assume that the cell size is small compared with the wavelength, but large compared with the radius a of the inclusions. Explicit formulae are obtained for asymptotic expansion of the solution of the problem in terms of the dimensionless magnitude q of the wavevector and radius a. This leads to explicit formulae for the effective dielectric tensor and the dispersion relation with the rigorously justified error of order O((q 2 + a 2)5/2).
