    The increase in uranium mining in Kazakhstan has brought with it a number of problems. Reducing the negative impact of radiation-toxic factors on the health of workers and the population in uranium mining regions is one of them. This article presents a pilot population health study in which we developed approaches to support residents living near an operating uranium mining enterprise. The purpose of the current study was to assess the impact of technogenic factors on the health of those living near the Syrdarya uranium ore province. Data collected from 5605 residents from the village of Bidaykol (the main group)-which is located 4 km from the uranium mining enterprise-and the village of Sunakata (the control group), which is located in the Kyzylorda region, were analyzed. A bidirectional cohort study was conducted. The prevalence of acute and chronic diseases among the residents of Bidaykol was 1.3 times higher than that in the control group. The structure of morbidity was dominated by pathologies of the genitourinary system (27%), the circulatory system (14.4%), and the respiratory system (11.9%). Relative risks (RR > 1) were identified for most classes of diseases, the highest being for diseases of the blood (RR = 2.6), skin (RR = 2.3), and genitourinary system (RR = 1.9). In the main group, renal pathologies were the most frequent class in the age group of 30-40 years, occurring mainly in women. In addition, they had a direct dependence on the duration of residence in the territory of the uranium ore province. Further studies into the interaction between the technogenic factors associated with uranium mining enterprises and the development of diseases of the urinary system are needed. This will make it possible to determine ways to prevent these pathologies in the population.

    Mine restoration is a long and ongoing process, requiring careful management, which must be informed by site-specific, geochemical risk assessment. Paired topsoil and tree core samples from 4 sites within the uranium mining complex of INB Caldas in Minas Gerais (Brazil) were collected. Soil samples were analysed for their total content of Co, Fe, Pb, U and Zn by XRF, and subsequently, the potential environmental bioavailability of these metals were investigated by DGT and pore water analysis. In addition, results were compared with metal concentrations obtained by Tree Coring from the forest vegetation. In all sampling areas, mean total concentrations of U (Ctot. = 100.5 ± 66.5 to 129.6 ± 57.1 mg kg-1), Pb (Ctot. = 30.8 ± 12.7 to 90.8 ± 90.8 mg kg-1), Zn (Ctot. = 91.5 ± 24.7 to 99.6 ± 10.3 mg kg-1) and Co (Ctot. = 73.8 ± 25.5 to 119.7 ± 26.4 mg kg-1) in soils exceeded respective quality reference values. Study results suggest that AMD caused the increase of labile concentrations of Zn in affected soils. The high lability of the elements Pb (R = 62 ± 34 to 81 ± 29%), U (R = 57 ± 20 to 77 ± 28%) and Zn (R = 21 ± 25 to 34 ± 31%) in soils together with high bioconcentration factors found in wood samples for Pb (BCF = 0.0004 ± 0.0003 to 0.0026 ± 0.0033) and Zn (BCF = 0.012 ± 0.013 to 0.025 ± 0.021) indicated a high toxic potential of these elements to the biota in the soils of the study site. The combination of pore water and DGT analysis with Tree Coring showed to be a useful approach to specify the risk of metal polluted soils. However, the comparison of the results from DGT and Tree Coring could not predict the uptake of metals into the xylems of the sampled tree individuals.

    This study aims to estimate the association between radon and site-specific cancer mortality among a large contemporary cohort of male uranium miners.
    Annual occupational radon exposure was estimated based on a worker\'s duration of underground mining in a year and estimates of potential alpha energy of radon progeny in their location of work. Cancer mortality over the period 1977-1992 was ascertained for a cohort of 16 434 male underground uranium miners employed in the Czech Republic between 1946 and 1992. Poisson regression was used to estimate relationships between cumulative radiation exposure (in working level months [WLM]) and site-specific cancer mortality.
    Radon is positively associated with lung cancer mortality (excess relative rate [ERR] per 100 WLM = 0.2; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.10, 0.37). The best fit of the dose-response relationship between radon and lung cancer mortality was linear and estimates of radon-lung cancer associations varied by windows of time-since-exposure. Positive associations between radon and several types of cancer other than lung cancer were identified, notably chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) (ERR/100 WLM = 0.24; 95% CI: [not determined [ND], 5.10]) and extrathoracic cancer (ERR/100 WLM = 0.12; 95% CI: [ND, 0.69]). We observed no associations between radon and stomach cancer, nor between radon and several hematopoietic cancer subtypes.
    This study confirms the established radon-lung cancer association and suggests that radon may also be associated with other types of cancer mortality. Further investigations of extrathoracic and CLL cancer, with the aim of obtaining more precise estimates, are warranted to understand associations between radon and cancers other than lung.

    UNASSIGNED: Radium is the most common source of alpha radiation exposure to humans and non-human species in the environment but the dosimetry is complicated by the decay chain which involves gamma exposure due to radon daughters. This paper seeks to determine the separate contributions of alpha and gamma doses to the total dose and total direct and non-targeted effect in a fish and a human cell line.
    UNASSIGNED: This study aimed to isolate the effect of alpha particles following exposure to low doses of radium in cells, and their progeny which received no further exposure. This was initially done by comparing the survival values of a human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) and an embryonic Chinook salmon cell line (CHSE-214) exposed to gamma radiation, from survival of the same cell lines exposed to mixed alpha and gamma radiation through exposure to Ra-226 and its decay products. A Monte Carlo simulation was later performed to determine the contributions of radium decay products including radon daughters.
    UNASSIGNED: The human cell line showed increased radioresistance when exposed to low doses of alpha particles. In contrast the fish cell line, which demonstrated radioresistance to low dose gamma radiation, showed increased lethality when exposed to low doses of alpha particles. Significant and complex levels of non-targeted effects were induced in progeny of irradiated cells. The simulation showed that gamma and beta decay products did not contribute significant dose and the highest beta dose was below the threshold for inducing non-targeted effects.
    UNASSIGNED: The results confirm the need to consider the dose-response relationship when developing radiation weighting factors for low dose exposures, as well as the need to be aware of possible cell line and species differences.

    Uranium mining and milling activities raise environmental concerns due to the release of radioactive and other toxic elements. Their long-term management thus requires a knowledge of past events coupled with a good understanding of the geochemical mechanisms regulating the mobility of residual radionuclides. This article presents the results on the traces of anthropic activity linked to previous uranium (U) mining activities in the vicinity of the Rophin tailings storage site (Puy de Dôme, France). Several complementary approaches were developed based on a study of the site\'s history and records, as well as on a radiological and chemical characterization of soil cores and a dendrochronology. Gamma survey measurements of the wetland downstream of the Rophin site revealed a level of 1050 nSv.h-1. Soil cores extracted in the wetland showed U concentrations of up to 1855 mg.kg-1, which appears to be associated with the presence of a whitish silt loam (WSL) soil layer located below an organic topsoil layer. Records, corroborated by prior aerial photographs and analyses of 137Cs and 14C activities, suggest the discharge of U mineral particles while the site was being operated. Moreover, lead isotope ratios indicate that contamination in the WSL layer can be discriminated by a larger contribution of radiogenic lead to total lead. The dendroanalysis correlate U emissions from Rophin with the site\'s history. Oak tree rings located downstream of the site contain uranium concentrations ten times higher than values measured on unaffected trees. Moreover, the highest U concentrations were recorded not only for the operating period, but more surprisingly for the recent site renovations as well. This integrated approach corroborates that U mineral particles were initially transported as mineral particles in Rophin\'s watershed and that a majority of the deposited uranium appears to have been trapped in the topsoil layer, with high organic matter content.

    A mine in an area of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), characterized by acid mine drainage, generates effluents with natural radionuclide concentrations, usually above the limits authorized by the regulator. The plant exploiting NORM controls the water quality and discharges it into the aquatic environment after meeting technical requirements. Downstream, water usage is unrestricted. In order to reach activity concentrations in the released effluents below the authorized values, the facility applies a chemical treatment to the effluent. Then, to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment, the facility performs sampling of treated effluent and determines the activity concentration of natural radionuclides (Unat, 226Ra, and 210Pb from the uranium series and 232Th and 228Ra from the thorium series). In the current study, the proportion and distribution of these radionuclides between the soluble and particulate fractions were determined. The measured activity concentrations were compared with the values proposed by the World Health Organization and Brazilian legislation, as well as other authorities, as regards the potable use from the radioprotection point of view. It was observed that the radionuclides are not in secular equilibrium. The fractions contribute differently to the total release of radionuclide, and there is no linear relationship between the fractions. The average activity concentrations did not result in radiological restrictions to water use, and the committed effective dose due to ingestion was estimated at 0.06 mSv y-1. Therefore, there is no radiological restriction to water use, since the dose which was found was below the constraint value for the public.

    In highly permeable sedimentary rock formations, U extraction by in-situ leaching techniques (ISR - In-Situ Recovery) is generally considered to have a limited environmental impact at ground level. Significantly, this method of extraction produces neither mill tailings nor waste rocks. Underground, however, the outcome for 238U daughter elements in aquifers is not well known because of their trace concentrations in the host rocks. Thus, understanding the in-situ mobility of these elements remains a challenge. Two samples collected before and after six months of ISR experiments (Dulaan Uul, Mongolia) were studied with the help of a digital autoradiography technique (DA) of alpha particles, bulk alpha spectrometry, and complementary petrographic observation methods. These techniques demonstrate that before and after leaching, the radioactivity is concentrated in altered and microporous Fe-Ti oxides. Most of the daughter elements of U remain trapped in the rock after the leaching process. DA confirms that the alpha activity of the Fe-Ti oxides remains high after uranium leaching, and the initial secular equilibrium of the 238U series for 230Th to 210Po daughter elements (including 226Ra) of the fresh rocks is maintained after leaching. While these findings should be confirmed by more systematic studies, they already identify potential mechanisms explaining why the U-daughter concentrations in leaching water are low.

    OBJECTIVE: The exposure of embryos or foetuses to ionising radiation can cause serious detriments to health. Thus, an enhanced incidence of spontaneous abortions and congenital anomalies might be expected in the vicinity of a uranium processing plant. We analysed the situation in the vicinity of MAPE Mydlovary, a facility about 20 km from České Budějovice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic, which was in operation from 1963 to 1992.
    METHODS: No relevant data are available for the period of operation of the uranium processing plant. Statistical data have only been collected since 1994. As sanitation work in the area was initiated at around that time and has yet to be completed, we considered a study of possible prenatal effects in the vicinity of MAPE Mydlovary to still be of interest. Data were provided by the Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic for the years 1994-2013.
    RESULTS: We tested whether there are demonstrable, statistically significant differences between the microregions of the four closest villages (Mydlovary, Olešník, Zahájí, and Zliv), the District of České Budějovice, the South-Bohemian Region, and the Czech Republic.
    CONCLUSIONS: No increase was found in the incidence of spontaneous abortions and congenital anomalies in the vicinity of this former uranium processing plant compared to the surrounding District of České Budějovice, the South Bohemian Region, or the Czech Republic as a whole.

    The diffusion length of 222Rn in uraniferous waste rock was determined through a novel experiment. Large PVC columns were filled to different depths in the range from 0.5 m to 3.0 m with waste rock material from the Ranger uranium mine and the build-up of 222Rn activity concentration in the column headspace above the material was measured after closing the columns with a lid. Measurements were made approximately one month after filling the columns and again after approximately one and two years. The average 222Rn diffusion length derived from the measurements was 1.9 ± 0.2 m in the dry material. The corresponding diffusion coefficient was (7.3 ± 0.7) × 10-6 m2 s-1. For an infinitely thick layer of the dry material, the average value of the 222Rn exhalation flux density relative to the 226Ra activity concentration was estimated as (5.3 ± 0.3) × 10-4 Bq m-2 s-1 per Bq kg-1. From the diffusion length, the waste rock material was characterised as both a source and attenuator of 222Rn for its proposed use as the surface cover on the final landform of the remediated Ranger uranium mine.

    Concentrations of potentially toxic metals including Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, U, Th in surface water and sediment samples collected from a river were analyzed to assess the contaminations, distribution characteristics, and sources of these metals. The contents of the metals were lower than the standard levels set by World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water. However, U and Th contents were far beyond the background values of surface water. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, and U in sediments were higher than the background values and the Probable Effect Level (PEL) of sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) which may result in high potential harmful biological effects to aquatic ecosystems. Based on the contamination factor (CF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and potential ecological risk index (RI), Cd, Cr, and U were considered to be the metals that mainly contribute to the contamination of sediments. The calculation results also indicated that the sites adjacent to the uranium ore field were highly polluted. Results of cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and correlation analysis revealed that Cr, Pb, U, and Th were highly correlated with each other. These metals mainly originated from both anthropogenic sources and natural processes, especially emissions from uranium mining and quarrying, whereas Cd mostly came from anthropogenic sources (agricultural activities) of the upper reaches of the river.
