    OBJECTIVE: To understand and interpret nursing students\' views on nursing identity and their reasons for choosing nursing as a career after participating in a face-to-face storytelling panel by academics.
    BACKGROUND: Knowing nursing students\' view of the profession and their thoughts about the profession, their roles and their future will guide nursing academics to develop evidence-based strategies that will enable participants to realize their own professional identities. Storytelling has an important role in creating and strengthening a strong professional identity among participants.
    METHODS: This study is a sample case study.
    METHODS: This research was carried out in the fall semester of the 2023-2024 academic year with participants registered in nursing program at the Faculty of Health Sciences of a state university in the Central Anatolia Region of Türkiye. The study was completed with one hundred ten participants. Five academics were invited to the panel at the Faculty of Health Sciences to share their experiences, stories and reasons for choosing nursing as a career through storytelling. The data were collected using the surveys, which includes five structured open ended questions and analyzed using descriptive analysis.
    RESULTS: Five main themes emerged: 1. Participants\' views on nursing profession; 2. Awareness of positive/negative emotions related to the profession as a part of nursing stories and feeling that these emotions are experienced in the stories; 3. Changes in the perspective of the profession and sense of belonging to the profession as part of nursing stories; 4. Facilitators in choosing nursing as a career; and 5. Barriers to choosing nursing as a career.
    CONCLUSIONS: Providing participants with the chance to both listen to the real stories of academic nurses and to reflect on themselves through writing was a dynamic experience that motivated participants to understand their perceptions of nurses and nursing profession.

    This study aims to determine the factors influencing the career preparation behavior of nursing students in the post-COVID-19 era and to provide a basis for preparation strategies to enhance nursing students\' nursing professionalism and career preparation behaviors. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that measures major satisfaction, self-efficacy, nursing image, nursing professionalism, nursing image and intuition, and career preparation to identify factors influencing nursing students\' career preparation behavior in the post-COVID-19 era. An online survey was conducted to collect the data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson\'s correlation, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. A total of 240 students were included; most of them were female (86.3%) and between 21 and 25 years old (80%). The level of motivation to pursue nursing (F = 12.34, p < 0.001) and clinical practice satisfaction (F = 11.37, p < 0.001) showed statistically significant differences in career preparation behavior. Self-efficacy (r = 0.32), major satisfaction (r = 0.32), nursing image (r = 0.32), and nursing professionalism (r = 0.32) were positively correlated with career preparation behavior and significant (p < 0.001). According to the findings, nursing professionalism and image can be enhanced by providing career planning and counseling based on the student\'s degree of comprehension and cognitive behaviors to nurture the professional and positive attitudes that are essential for a successful nursing career. Nursing schools need to incorporate a job portal, facilities, and a mentorship program to help nursing students prepare for their careers.

    BACKGROUND: The shortage of skilled nurses is a major concern for health systems worldwide. This may be partly due to the hesitancy of some nurses to enter or remain in the nursing career. This shortage consequently reduces the quality of standard patient care, increases patients\' length of stay in a hospital, increases medical costs, and results in patients\' dissatisfaction. This study aimed to explore hesitancy among senior undergraduate nursing students to pursue a career in nursing.
    METHODS: This qualitative study adopted a thematic analysis approach. The population comprised senior undergraduate nursing students at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Iran, who indicated that they were hesitant to pursue a career in nursing. The study sampling was performed from May 2021 till February 2022 and continued until data saturation. Twenty-four interviews were conducted with the selected students. The attributes related to hesitancy among senior undergraduate nursing students to pursue a career in nursing were extracted as themes and sub-themes.
    RESULTS: Four themes were identified: academic idiosyncrasies, individual characteristics, poor nursing market regulations (sub-themes: nursing as a tough and intense career, and unfavorable employment contracts), and the peculiarities of the workplace (sub-themes: conflict within work environment, and barriers to professional nursing practice).
    CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study showed that senior undergraduate nursing students weigh their future career options from various academic, personal, professional, and work environment dimensions. The findings provide new insights for decision makers to design and implement innovative strategies to promote retention in nursing careers. We recommend to provide academic counseling for all students and applicants of nursing before they enter the nursing education. Furthermore, we suggest to improve study and work environments, and to implement incentive programs to enhance enthusiasm of nursing students for pursuing a nursing career.

    To explore secondary school students\' perspectives about nursing careers and their motivations to become future nurses.
    Qualitative descriptive design.
    A qualitative study was conducted among secondary school students in Central Tanzania. Secondary school students who study science subjects and are eligible for nursing studies were selected from two schools. Two focus-group discussions, comprising seven and eight students per group, one in each school, were conducted. The data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using qualitative thematic analysis.
    Two themes with seven sub-themes emerged representing students\' perspectives about nursing and the factors that motivate them to choose nursing as their future career. These themes are as follows: (1) Perspectives about a nurse and nursing, with five sub-themes: (i) nurses\' roles; (ii) qualities of nurses; (iii) workplace for nurses; (iv) nature of the job; and (v) position of a nurse or nursing; and (2) Motivations to become future nurses, with two sub-themes: (i) extrinsic factors, and (ii) intrinsic factors.

    OBJECTIVE: Systematically synthesize research about factors that influence CPD over a nursing career.
    BACKGROUND: Continuing professional development (CPD) in nursing is defined as \'a life-long process of active participation in learning activities that assist in developing and maintaining continuing competences, enhancing professional practice and supporting achievement of career goals\'. Research has shown that inability to access resources and activities for CPD influences quality of care and adversely affects nurses\' satisfaction, recruitment and retention. Although more and more research regarding CPD is done, a comprehensive overview about the needs of nurses for successful CPD is missing.
    METHODS: Scoping review, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews ensuring all quality standards are met.
    METHODS: Between February and April 2020 the electronic databases CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Psychinfo and Eric were searched as well as reference lists of included papers. Papers published in peer-reviewed journals were included without restrictions on publication date, design or setting. Thematic analysis was done to synthesize the data.
    RESULTS: The search yielded 2673 papers of which 60 papers were included. Analyses showed that factors that influence CPD differ over a nursing career, which led to the identification of three groups: newly graduated nurses; experienced nurses; and experienced nurses with ambitions for advanced roles. Furthermore, analyses showed that factors for all three groups are related to personal and contextual facilitators and barriers. Newly graduated nurses find it important to be an accepted member of the team. They experience barriers when integrating into the nursing profession, where they for instance experience workplace incivility. Experienced nurses experience contextual barriers related to a lack of supportive structures and inaccessibility of CPD resources. There is limited time and availability of role models and a lack of support from managers and other colleagues. Moreover, the clinical care dynamics influence their ability to pursue CPD. For the experienced nurses with ambitions for advanced roles, an important barrier is that nursing culture emphasizes direct patient care. Often it is unclear what the value is of new nursing roles which makes it difficult for them to develop these.
    CONCLUSIONS: All nurses strive for CPD. However, organizations need to recognize nurses\' personal goals and unique strategies as this leads to different needs in CPD. In addition, resources must be made available and accessible before CPD can be successfully pursued by all nurses.

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the nursing image and social status characteristics on young people\'s decision to choose nursing as a career.
    BACKGROUND: Low social status and social image threaten the nursing workforce.
    METHODS: A cross-sectional study.
    METHODS: The study was conducted with 745 high school students and 349 nursing students between 24 March and 10 May 2022. The data were collected through the Nursing Image Scale, Job Satisfaction Scale and Personal Form and analyzed using multiple regression and decision tree analysis.
    RESULTS: High school (43.1 %) and 73.6 % of nursing students expressed their intention to become a nurse. While the likelihood of choosing nursing as a career decreases among man high school students (p = 0.018) with a high occupation (p = 0.003) and income index (p = 0.003), it increases among low-income female students (p = 0.012), perceiving occupational status more positively (p = 0.002). The possibility of continuing in the profession increases among nursing students who have a higher opinion of the profession\'s status (p = 0.010) and job satisfaction increases as the image perception improves (r = 0.385, p < 0.01).
    CONCLUSIONS: Perception of professional image guides career choice in nursing. The choice of nursing as a future profession differs according to gender and is influenced by social status. The glass ceiling effect should be evaluated in nurses coming from low status.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine (a) public image of nursing and the intention to choose nursing as a future career and (b) the relationship between the public image, gender roles and the choice of the nursing career among Arab high school students.
    BACKGROUND: School graduates from the Arab sector represent an important social group with the potential to provide quality candidates for the nursing profession in Israel.
    METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 138 high school students from two Arab schools in Israel completed a structured questionnaire.
    RESULTS: One third of the sample intended to choose nursing as a future career. Students from families with a higher level of paternal education and those exposed to the work of nurses perceived nursing as more positive. The profession\'s public image contributed to the explanation of 21% of the variance of the intention to choose a nursing career.
    CONCLUSIONS: A positive public image of nursing contributes to decisions about choosing a nursing career in the future among Arab high school students.
    CONCLUSIONS: School graduates may be influenced by providing information and presenting the role of a nurse as significant, as well as by emphasizing the positive image of nursing to parents and influential people in the Arab community.

    BACKGROUND: There is a shortage of nurses worldwide, and a large number of older nurses will be entering retirement in the near future. Older nurses have rich nursing experience, and their retirement is a major loss of resources for the nursing profession. Returning to work after retirement is becoming increasingly popular among retirees today, but there is limited knowledge of the perceptions of older nurses regarding continuing to work in a nursing career after retirement.
    OBJECTIVE: To explore older nurses\' perceptions of continuing to work in a nursing career after retirement.
    METHODS: We conducted a descriptive, qualitative study of older nurses from two public hospitals of different levels in China in 2018.
    METHODS: A total of 27 older nurses aged 50-60 years were recruited, 15 from a tertiary hospital and 12 from a secondary hospital.
    METHODS: Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with older nurses. An interview guide was developed to explore nurses\' perceptions of continuing to work in a nursing career after retirement. Thematic analysis was used for the data analysis. We developed an interview guide and analysed the data based on the three essential conditions of the framework for understanding behaviour.
    RESULTS: Based on the definition of the three essential conditions of the framework for understanding behaviour, 14 subthemes emerged from the data were categorised under this framework. The three main themes were as follows: the nurses\' perceptions of their capability, motivation, and opportunity related to engaging in a nursing career after retirement. A number of older nurses with rich clinical experience have the ability and motivation to engage in nursing a career after retirement. However, discrimination against nurses, burnout, and the effects on young people\'s employment are barriers to older nurses considering working in a nursing career after retirement. Regarding re-employment after retirement, older nurses also expressed concerns about their physical health, family responsibilities, and salary as well as lack of managerial and policy support.
    CONCLUSIONS: These themes confirmed previous findings and offered new perspectives on older Chinese nurses\' perceptions of working in a nursing career after retirement. These findings will influence future policy development and research directions. Policies for facilitating a prolonged working life should be developed. Future research should focus on how to address the challenges confronted by older nurses.

    OBJECTIVE: To identify factors influencing high school students\' choice of nursing and explore strategic interventions to promote nursing as a career in the Arab region.
    BACKGROUND: This study forms part of a PhD thesis, conducted in Bahrain, in a healthcare environment with a high dependence on expatriate nurses to maintain nursing services. However, in attracting local candidates to study nursing, the public image of nursing in the Middle East must be improved by implementing strategies that are sensitive to the Arabic culture.
    METHODS: A mixed methods approach incorporating quantitative and qualitative dimensions.
    METHODS: Data were collected between 2012 - 2015 using self-administered questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and written narratives. The study sample included high school students, parents, career guidance counsellors, and nursing students. A one-group pre-test posttest design was used to introduce a nursing recruitment intervention to high school students. spss was used to analyse quantitative data. Colaizzi\'s () and Krueger\'s () frameworks were applied to analyse the qualitative data.
    RESULTS: It is proposed that the public perceptions of Arab people about nursing may be grounded in strong cultural influences and any efforts to improve the enrolment and retention of local nurses should consider enhancing the social values of the nursing profession. The NURSING-Positive Recruitment Arabic Model incorporates essential elements which will guide nursing recruitment in the Arabic cultures.
    CONCLUSIONS: The study findings reflect certain issues similar to the core international literature on nursing recruitment, however there are fundamental issues particular to the Arab region, which must be included in the development of a nursing recruitment strategy for Arabic nursing.
