MindScape aims to study the benefits of integrating time series behavioral patterns (e.g., conversational engagement, sleep, location) with Large Language Models (LLMs) to create a new form of contextual AI journaling, promoting self-reflection and well-being. We argue that integrating behavioral sensing in LLMs will likely lead to a new frontier in AI. In this Late-Breaking Work paper, we discuss the MindScape contextual journal App design that uses LLMs and behavioral sensing to generate contextual and personalized journaling prompts crafted to encourage self-reflection and emotional development. We also discuss the MindScape study of college students based on a preliminary user study and our upcoming study to assess the effectiveness of contextual AI journaling in promoting better well-being on college campuses. MindScape represents a new application class that embeds behavioral intelligence in AI.

UNASSIGNED: Trainees and faculty in academic medicine often struggle with self-promotion. Barriers may be more formidable for women and other groups underrepresented in medicine. Experience-based stories illustrating personal strengths are preferable when engaging in self-promotion activities.
UNASSIGNED: We developed a 90- to 120-minute workshop utilizing approaches such as iterative journaling and peer discussion to teach the development of problem-action-result (PAR) stories for self-promotion efforts in interviews and written applications to new positions. Participants provided Likert-scale (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree) and free-response evaluations, which we analyzed for workshop strengths and areas for improvement.
UNASSIGNED: We presented the workshop in person to 28 pediatric residents and subsequently to 22 residents, fellows, and faculty at an in-person national meeting. Sixty-one percent of the resident group and 100% of the national workshop group completed the evaluation. Both groups reported high satisfaction with the workshop\'s format (M = 4.7) and content (M = 4.7) and indicated intention to use the skills learned (M = 4.7). Strengths included the PAR format, interactivity, journaling, opportunity for reflection, and tips for interviewing and writing. Areas to improve included offering the workshop earlier in the academic year and providing more written examples of PAR stories.
UNASSIGNED: This workshop used strategies of personal reflection, journaling, and peer feedback to help participants understand behavior-based recruiting practices and the PAR framework as a strategy for successful self-promotion. Learners can use these strategies to develop greater confidence and efficacy and to address barriers to effective self-promotion they encounter.

Multidisciplinary patient care rounds are increasingly seen as a vital complement to patient care management. Family engagement in these rounds, especially in the paediatric population, is important to treatment and outcomes, but there is little information about family experience in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
To develop a process using family care journals (FCJ) to systematically evaluate family experience in the PICU and identify needed supportive resources that will enhance their critical care stay.
This is a single-centre quasi-experimental design conducted at a large urban quaternary level freestanding children\'s hospital. A family care journal (FCJ) was distributed to families upon admission to PICU to serve as a resource tool during their stay. An electronic point of care (POC) questionnaire was used to assess families\' experiences in the PICU.
Three hundred sixty-six questionnaires were completed (100% response rate) and analysed. Overall, there was an improvement in all phases post FCJ implementation compared with the baseline. Seventy five percent of families found it a useful tool for communication with the PICU team. Open-ended comments revealed improvement opportunities related to communication, environment, and delay in care. Almost all commented on excellent nursing care.
Introducing FCJ in a paediatric ICU is a practical approach, providing a cost-effective method to assess family experiences and gain insights for ongoing quality improvement efforts. Collaboration among all care team members, including nursing, medical, and administrative leaders, is crucial for empathetically addressing parental needs during hospitalization.
Combining the use of journals and questionnaires provides the clinical team with an efficient means of collecting valuable feedback from parents regarding their experience in the PICU and the factors that foster ongoing commitment from families. Nurses play a crucial role in encouraging the adoption of these journals, as they promote greater parent involvement in their children\'s care.

After the unexpected death of a child, bereaved parents require prompt access to helpful support systems. Online therapeutic writing courses can make such support accessible. Because few studies have included bereaved fathers as participants, we explored the experiences of fathers whose children died unexpectedly and who were part of an online course of therapeutic writing in Norway. We piloted two courses (group 1, six weeks, n = 9; group 2, 5 weeks, n = 5). We describe our methodological considerations for using poetic representations in qualitative health research and present four poetic representations based on fieldwork notes written by the principal investigator. Then, we triangulate and narratively analyze them together with two collective poems written by participants from each group; excerpts of the writings from two fathers, one per group; evaluation surveys (n = 4; n = 3); and, anonymous check-out journaling from the second group (n = 3). Resistance was a salient feature of our participants\' grief, and writing enabled them to both be in contact with their emotional world and process difficult emotions as they looked for meaning despite the death of their children. Those who attended the most classes perceived the course as transformative, being part of an ongoing self-exploration, and a possibility to continue and strengthen the bond with their children. Our findings mirror the complexities of the grief experiences of fathers, giving account of their need to find a rhythm to dive into their emotional world, the importance of peer support, and the value of diversifying intervention techniques to meet individual needs and preferences.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) often have psychological difficulties on top of their medically complex care, such as anxiety, depression, and medical mistrust. These have been shown to be associated with worse adherence, pulmonary function test results, and other health outcomes. In this pilot trial, we implemented a journaling program based on narrative therapy methodology to improve mental and physical health outcomes for individuals with CF.
METHODS: Eight adolescents aged 12-17 with a confirmed diagnosis of CF followed in a single center CF clinic were emailed weekly journaling prompts that explored topics like treatment adherence, feeling different with CF, anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships. Subjects completed surveys about their experience with the writing assignment and measures of wellness including the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC-17) and baseline health data was collected from the electronic medical records.
RESULTS: The average score for the PSC-17 decreased by 5.5 points, and fell to less than 28 (mean 23.5, SD 12.2), which is the cutoff for screening positive for behavioral or emotional problems. Participants reported the study was enjoyable and had improvement in feelings of anxiety/depression. 100% of participants responded \"Strongly Agree\" to the statement \"I recommend other people with CF to write about the topics from this study.\"
CONCLUSIONS: The journaling intervention for individuals with CF was feasible and well received. Initial results show improvement in PSC-17 and other well-being measures. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of journaling on mental health and disease outcomes.

Ethnographic journaling can provide students with powerful opportunities to recognize and value their individual and collective perspectives as both observers and analysts of the world around them, especially in times of crisis. In this Perspectives essay, we share our experiences of using the Pandemic Journaling Project platform as a teaching resource in the first years of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. We consider various aspects of online ethnographic journaling, including creative teaching strategies, journaling\'s therapeutic potential, and student perspectives on the opportunity to document their own experiences as a forward-looking form of \"archival activism.\" We also discuss how journaling can create robust ethnographic learning opportunities while at the same time providing a valuable space for connection and social support, especially when classroom dynamics are constrained by crisis conditions. Ethnographic journaling can help students appreciate what it means for ethnographers to bring their whole selves into their qualitative work in ways that can challenge mainstream misconceptions and contribute concrete forms of data and ethnographic insight. Overall, the essay explores how ethnographic journaling can create meaningful and creative opportunities for curricular innovation; generate durable forms of ethnographic insight; and also bring student experiences into the classroom in ways that can help them cultivate their voice, build a sense of solidarity, and potentially ease student distress.

In this article, we introduce the SSM-MH Special Issue \"Journaling and Mental Health during COVID-19: Insights from the Pandemic Journaling Project,\" which presents findings from the Pandemic Journaling Project (PJP). PJP is an online journaling platform and mixed-methods research study created in May 2020 to provide ordinary people around the world an opportunity to chronicle the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in their lives-for themselves and for posterity. The essays in this collection demonstrate how journaling via an online platform can help illuminate experiences of mental wellbeing and distress, with important implications for both research and clinical practice. We begin by introducing the Pandemic Journaling Project and describing our procedures for generating the data subsets analyzed in the papers collected here. We then outline the principal interventions of the special issue as a whole, introduce the papers, and identify a number of cross-cutting themes and broader contributions. Finally, we point toward key questions for future research and therapeutic practice by highlighting the three-fold value of online journaling as a research method, a therapeutic strategy, and a tool for advancing social justice. We focus in particular on how this innovative methodological approach holds promise as both a modality for psychotherapeutic intervention and a form of grassroots collaborative ethnography. We suggest that our methods create new opportunities for confronting the impact of pandemics and other large-scale events that generate radical social change and affect population-level mental health.

Veterinary medical schools are tasked with not only providing experiences necessary to graduate veterinarians proficient in the skills and knowledge used most frequently in private practice, but also develop expertise in animal behavior, welfare, ethics, veterinary forensics, and cultural competency. Integrating all these knowledge areas into the curriculum can be challenging. Shelter medicine is increasingly identified by educators as an optimal learning environment to offer exposure to these topics. It can not only meet learning objectives in veterinary medical curriculum, but also provide students with authentic learning experiences to engage in and gain a deeper understanding of cultural humility, implicit bias, diversity, and inclusion. This includes documentation of international learning outcomes for shelter medicine in veterinary medical curriculum. There have been no studies evaluating authentic learning experiences specific to shelter medicine programs and their impacts on students. The aim of this study was to determine the individual activities and thematic categories on which veterinary students chose to reflect on and their potential impacts during a clinical rotation in shelter medicine at Penn Vet through qualitative content analysis of their journal entries. In our study, students found experiences on the shelter medicine rotation to be beneficial to their growth as a future veterinarian, provided them with takeaways that they found applicable and practical, helped them self-identify knowledge gaps, and changed their perspectives on several important topics related to collective human and animal welfare. These results speak to the value perceived by students of the rotation and suggest an authentic learning experience through a shelter medicine program can help cultivate more practice-ready and culturally competent veterinary graduates.
