    There is increased reliance on newly licensed nurses to fill open healthcare positions. Nurse residency programs (NRPs) provide the training, mentorship, and support newly licensed nurses require to successfully transition to professional practice. Research suggests that NRPs improve nurse retention, clinical outcomes, and organizational outcomes. Sufficient NRP full-time equivalents are needed to ensure adequate support and program management. This article describes how a Colorado hospital system secured additional NRP Coordinator full-time equivalent using a six-step process.

    A nurse residency for newly licensed registered nurses is best practice. A novel model for transitioning new nurses is a 1-year, postbaccalaureate residency that is rotation based with protected time for supervised clinical and didactic learning. After 10 years with this program, a summative evaluation found that retention rates for 1, 2, 3, and 5 years after program completion were 93%, 83%, 73%, and 82%, respectively, higher than similar programs in the literature.

    Exposing new nurses to theoretical teaching strategies that help them to navigate the ethical challenges in clinical practice is essential for retention and long-term job satisfaction. This article explores the rationale for teaching ethics content in nurse residency programs and ways to navigate ethical decision-making in the clinical setting. Examples of evidence-informed teaching strategies that enhance knowledge retention and reduce the gap between ethical theory and practice are included.

    UNASSIGNED: Internships designed for autistic people can help them to find employment, but there is little research about the experiences of those involved with internship schemes. To learn more about a new paid internship scheme in the United Kingdom, the Employ Autism network, we interviewed 19 interns, who were autistic young adults without intellectual disability taking part in one of eight different internships. We also interviewed 22 employers (who worked with the interns), and 10 parents (who supported their children in the internship). The interns, employers and parents told us that the Employ Autism network was a valuable experience that helped the interns become more confident. Also, the parents said it helped the interns become more independent. All the groups said the Employ Autism network removed common barriers to employment, and interns and parents said it would help interns get a job in future. Employers and interns said they understood each other better during the internship, and employers said the internship made them think about how their organisations might have accidentally had barriers in place that could stop autistic people getting employed (barriers that they wanted to address in future). However, all groups said some expectations of the internship were not met. These findings suggest the Employ Autism network is helpful for autistic young adults without intellectual disability and employers, but that there are ways that the internships could be improved in future. We discuss the lessons we can learn from the Employ Autism network that might help others who are thinking about setting up, or getting involved in, similar internship schemes.

    OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the self-perception of competencies in obstetric emergencies among recently graduated physicians from universities in Lima, Peru; and to identify its associated factors.
    METHODS: An analytical study was conducted, with the study population comprising newly graduated doctors who attended the \"VI SERUMS National Convention\" in 2017. We used Poisson regressions to assess the factors associated with the self-perception of competencies in obstetric emergencies, calculating prevalence ratios (PR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
    RESULTS: We analyzed a population of 463 newly graduated physicians (mean age: 25.9 years), of which 33.3% reported feeling competent in obstetric emergencies. In the adjusted analyses, we found that having a previous health career (PR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.12-2.81), having completed the internship in EsSalud hospitals (PR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.31-1.68), and completing a university externship (PR: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.34-1.96) were associated with a higher prevalence of self-perceived competence in obstetric emergencies.
    CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that certain academic factors, such as completing an externship and internship in specific hospital settings, may enhance the competencies or competence self-perception of recently graduated physicians in obstetric emergencies. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and identify other factors that may impact physicians\' competencies in this field.

    To describe implementation of the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy (OUCOP) teaching and learning curriculum (TLC) for postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) and postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) residents, including the required components, evaluation structure, residency graduate outcomes and perceptions captured by a survey following program completion, generalizability to other institutions, and opportunities for future directions.
    As part of their residency training, pharmacy residents are required to develop and refine teaching, precepting, and presentation skills. To meet the required and elective competency areas, goals, and objectives on teaching, precepting, and presentation skills, many American Society of Health-System Pharmacists-accredited residency programs have utilized TLC programs. OUCOP offers 2 distinct TLC programs for PGY1 and PGY2 residents, respectively.
    The OUCOP TLC program provided residents with opportunities for development of teaching and presentation skills in a variety of settings. The majority of residency graduates currently practice as a clinical specialist, and the majority lecture, precept, and deliver continuing education presentations. Graduates felt that the mentorship and diversity of teaching activities were the most beneficial qualities of the program. In addition, the majority noted that mentorship in lecture preparation was helpful in creating presentations after graduation. On the basis of the feedback from the survey, several changes have been made to better prepare residents for their postgraduate careers. TLC programs should conduct ongoing assessments to continue to foster the development of precepting and teaching skills for residents\' future careers.

    OBJECTIVE: This study explored the experiences of nursing students with respect to learning processes and professional development during internships with COVID-19 patients to build a novel theoretical model.
    BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 outbreak had a profound impact on the worldwide learning system and it interrupted the internship experiences of nursing students. After the second wave of COVID-19, to balance academic activities with COVID-19 containment, some Italian universities allowed nursing students\' internships in COVID-19 units. This new experience may have influenced nursing students\' learning processes and professional development, but this is yet to be investigated.
    METHODS: A qualitative study using a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) approach.
    METHODS: Nursing students were recruited from two hospitals in northern Italy between January and April 2021. Data are gathered from interviews and a simultaneous comparative analysis were conducted to identify categories and codes, according to Charmaz\'s (2006) theory.
    RESULTS: The sample consisted of 28 students. The results suggested the core category, that is the \'Students\' sense of belonging to the nursing profession\' and four main categories: (1) From knowledge to know-how, (2) A new relationship modality, (3) Sharing and socialisation and (4) Responsibilization. Finally, a premise and a corollary, respectively (5) Motivation and the (6) Circularity of the process, were identified.
    CONCLUSIONS: Our study proposed a new theory of nursing students\' learning processes in clinical contexts during internships with COVID-19 patients. Despite significant difficulties, the nursing students developed a unique learning process characterised by motivation. Therefore, our study provided insight into the learning process during a pandemic and investigated the support needed for nursing students to continue their internships.

    Members of the dietetics profession have been discussing and confronting the lack of diversity within the profession. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is committed to diversity and inclusion efforts.
    Our aim was to determine current admission criteria and practices used by Dietetic Internships (DIs) across the United States.
    This was a cross-sectional study using electronic survey with open and close-ended items conducted in the fall of 2020.
    The electronic survey was distributed to 261 DI directors. Statistical analysis performed Descriptive statistics were calculated for each variable using SPSS software. Six topically related open-ended items were analyzed through a qualitative thematic approach.
    DI directors (n = 89) were primarily female (n = 76) and White (n = 77). Most admissions process and criteria decisions were made by committees. Directors (n = 79) reported using a predefined rubric/scoring system for candidate evaluation. Many (n = 60) indicated not using Graduate Record Examination scores. All reported considering Didactic Program in Dietetics\' grade point average; personal statement quality; professional interests and goals; and type and quantity of previous dietetics-related work and volunteer experience. The admission factors rated (on a 7-point scale) most important were quality of interview (mean = 6.03), Didactic Program in Dietetics\' grade point average (mean = 5.67), type of work and volunteer experience (mean = 5.62), quality of personal statement (mean = 5.5), recommender comments (mean = 5.41), and quantity of work and volunteer experience (mean = 5.40). Most (n = 80) indicated that they were satisfied with their selection processes.
    Educators should continue refining admissions processes as professional gatekeepers, consider reducing application fees, diversifying and training selection committees, re-evaluating admission criteria, and assessing how criteria weights.
