OBJECTIVE: To explore the trends and changes in the transport of children to paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) between 2013 and 2022.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis of routinely collected data.
METHODS: Children transported for care in a PICU in the UK and Ireland aged<16 years.
METHODS: None.
RESULTS: There were 43 058 transports to a PICU involving 36 438 children from 2013 to 2022 with the majority of children requiring only one transport. The number of transports increased from 4131 (2013) to 4792 (2022). Over the study period the percentage of children aged under 1 year who were transported decreased from 50.2% to 45.2% and similarly, the percentage who were invasively ventilated also decreased from 81.1% to 70.2%. Conversely, the use of non-invasive ventilation during transports increased slightly from 4.0% to 7.0%. The percentage of transports where a parent was able to accompany the child increased over time (2013: 66.2% to 2019: 74.9%), although there were reductions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and requirements for social distancing (2020: 52.4%).
CONCLUSIONS: We have demonstrated an increased use of specialist paediatric transport services and changes in the PICU population over time. Routine data collection from the transport services provide a means to measure improvements and changes over time in the service provided to critically ill children and young people who need transport to the PICU.

Paediatric resuscitation is a key skill for anyone in medicine who is involved in the care of children. Basic and advance paediatric life support courses are crucial in teaching those skills nationwide in a way that is memorable, protocolised and standardised. These courses are vital in the dissemination and upkeep of both theoretical and practical knowledge of paediatric resuscitation, with their primary aim being the return of spontaneous circulation. While sustaining life is important, preserving a life with quality, one with good functional and neurological outcomes should be the gold standard of any resuscitative attempt. Good neurological outcomes are dependent, in large part, on how well the postresuscitation stage is managed. This stage does not start in the intensive care unit, it starts at the point at which spontaneous circulation has been reinstated. The aim of this paper is to provide a basic overview of the main strategies that should be followed in order to minimise secondary brain injury after successful resuscitation attempts.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a life-threatening complication of infection typically caused by one of two bacterial species: Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes The outcomes in children with TSS can be devastating. Careful consideration of TSS is required as a potential differential diagnosis of children presenting with sepsis or severe illness associated with fever and rash.

OBJECTIVE: The Gaps in the Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) Journey Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) was developed in collaboration with CDH Australia, James Lind Alliance (JLA) and the Murdoch Children\'s Research Institute to identify research priorities for people with CDH, their families and healthcare workers in Australasia.
METHODS: Research PSP in accordance with the JLA standardised methodology.
METHODS: Australian community and institutions caring for patients with CDH and their families.
METHODS: CDH survivors, families of children born with CDH (including bereaved) and healthcare professionals including critical care physicians and nurses (neonatal and paediatric), obstetric, surgical, allied health professionals (physiotherapists, speech pathologists and speech therapists) and general practitioners.
METHODS: Top 10 research priorities for CDH.
RESULTS: 377 questions, from a community-based online survey, were categorised and collated into 50 research questions. Through a further prioritisation process, 21 questions were then discussed at a prioritisation workshop where they were ranked by 21 participants (CDH survivors, parents of children born with CDH (bereaved and not) and 11 multidisciplinary healthcare professionals) into their top 10 research priorities.
CONCLUSIONS: Stakeholders\' involvement identified the top 10 CDH-related research questions, spanning from antenatal care to long-term functional outcomes, that should be prioritised for future research to maximise meaningful outcomes for people with CDH and their families.
