UNASSIGNED: There is limited evidence to guide therapists in home modification outcome evaluation. Involving consumers in evaluating home modifications is critical to progressing practice. This study investigated the home modification experience and outcomes most valued by older adults and individuals with a disability in Australia.
UNASSIGNED: An interpretive description approach was used. Twenty participants aged 24-93 who had received major home modifications were interviewed and transcripts were analysed thematically.
UNASSIGNED: Two major themes emerged: life before and during modifications - \"it was all hard,\" and life after modifications - \"to have a life.\" People\'s prior experience of home, the circumstance of and time to plan modifications, the perceived value of the modifications, and the home modification process and funding influenced perceptions of outcomes. Valued home modification outcomes included those that enable people to experience emotional and physical health, and safety; do what they want; maintain the image of the home; and plan for the future. Experiences and perceptions of modifications ranged from supportive to disruptive.
UNASSIGNED: These findings point to the need for therapists to deeply understand and evaluate their clients\' experiences of home and life as an initial and critical step in the home modification process.Implications for rehabilitationMajor home modifications result in broad and meaningful outcomes of importance to clients.Occupational therapists need to partner with clients to understand their life before and during modifications to achieve positive outcomes.Evaluation of major home modifications needs to be integrated and prioritised in daily practice.

Home adaptation can be a key contributor to successfully aging at home, allowing older adults to remain in a familiar environment while maintaining their quality of life and well-being despite progressing functional difficulties. Although several theoretical studies on home adaptations exist, the benefits of custom home adaptations remain poorly evaluated. The present study\'s primary aims were to explore older adults\' expectations and needs regarding home adaptations and evaluate the impact of individualized home adaptations on quality of life, fear of falling, independence, and difficulties using adapted rooms. Its secondary aim was to describe the barriers and facilitators of home adaptation.
The 15 homes in this case series were adapted using an inclusive, interdisciplinary approach. Adaptations\' effects were assessed using a parallel mixed-methods design. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. An architect and a health professional visited each home twice to assess the older adult\'s expectations and needs, evaluate the home\'s technical aspects, and co-create an adaptation plan with that study participant. They assessed the older adult\'s perceived quality of life, fear of falling, independence, and difficulties using the rooms needing adaptations. Inhabitants received two more visits after the adaptations (one or two months and six months later) to assess their benefits.
Most homes had their bathroom adapted. Participants reported improved safety, independence, ease of use, positive feelings, and comfort. They also reported lower perceived levels of difficulties during the activities of daily living in the adapted rooms (reductions of 93.4% [SD = 12.7] of bathrooms and 100% of kitchens), an improvement in quality of life of 9.8% (SD = 27.6), and a reduction in fear of falling of 12.5% (SD = 9.7).
Home adaptations are beneficial to older adults\' activities of daily living and improve their quality of life; however, several factors hinder the implementation of those adaptations.

The ability to live independently plays a crucial role in the mental and psychological wellbeing of the disabled. To achieve this goal, most governments spend a substantial budget on home adaptation projects. It has been observed that schemes with different target clients (residents versus landlords) are different in efficiency and effectiveness. To understand why and how these schemes differ in performance, this paper develops and applies a generic economic evaluation framework for government-funded home adaptation schemes. Based on the individual-level surveys collected in the United Kingdom, an empirical model was formulated to quantify the determinants for various performance indicators, including money costs, time costs and client satisfaction. Robust estimation procedures were applied to deal with the heteroscedasticity and outlier problems in the data. Results showed that a specialized independent living scheme dedicated to disability adaptations (e.g., the Physical Adaptations Grant, PAG) had higher efficiency and effectiveness than general-purpose schemes (e.g., the Disabled Facilities Grant, DFG), because the funds were provided to the landlords who had a stronger motivation to minimize the time cost in the short run and maximize the future rent potential in the long run. A \"unified system\" approach to adaptations should be a guiding principle for policy development, regardless of who actually delivers the service.

Most adults over 65 years old live in mainstream housing in the United Kingdom, yet these can often be unsuitable for an individual\'s needs. With increased understanding of the relationship between housing, and health and well-being, the importance of modifying the home to suit individuals is recognised as being paramount. However, it is often difficult to monitor the ways in which home adaptations and equipment are used in the home. This study used innovative wearable technology to explore everyday, lived experiences of using home adaptations and equipment. Six older adults who had received a major home adaptation in the last 24 months took part in this study. Each participant used a wearable camera for one day and participated in a semi-structured interview while watching the images back as a \'slideshow\'. Using this novel approach, three themes were generated from the data: acquiring adaptations and equipment, adapting routine and changing behaviour, and inconsistent and unintended uses. The findings of this study open up the complexity of the lived experience of using home adaptations and equipment. Experiences from access to long-term outcomes are personal, and individuals modify and use the adaptations in various ways to suit their own needs. The wearable camera allowed additional insight into lived experience that would otherwise not have been captured without its use, as the photographs acted as a way of stimulating conversation and highlighting taken-for-granted behaviours not often consciously considered by the individuals.

The objective was to explore the ways in which people with dementia and their carers adapt their homes, including the barriers and use of available information. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 people with dementia and their informal carer. The collected data were analysed using thematic analysis. Three core themes emerged: Maintaining familiarity and coping with change, Having knowledge and finding knowledge and Meeting challenges through home adaptation. The most significant barriers to making home adaptations were lack of knowledge and maintaining familiarity. Having more information and making home modifications earlier might enable individuals with dementia to adjust to their adapted environment.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the experience of home for parents and carers of children with disabilities in Australia. Data for this qualitative study were gathered using semi-structured interviews with four families living in their own homes. An inductive thematic analysis revealed two main themes. The first was titled \'Aspects making everyday life easier\' explored the aspects of the home environment that facilitated home life for the child, including access to transport, services, family and home modifications. The second theme \'Decisions and efforts to create opportunities for the child\' emphasized the efforts made by parents and carers to promote their child\'s independence and participation including a strong consideration for their children\'s future needs. The study indicated that the location of home, appropriate home modifications and planning for the future defined the experience of home for parents and carers. These findings identify some important considerations for occupational therapists when providing services in the homes of families with children who have a disability.
