The UK screening and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) updated 2022 guidelines were developed by a multidisciplinary guideline development group from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, following the standards of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. They were published on the websites of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in March 2022, and formally published in Early Human Development in March 2023. The guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the screening and treatment of ROP. The most significant change in the 2022 updated version compared to the previous guidelines is the lowering of the gestational age screening criterion to below 31 weeks. The treatment section covers treatment indications, timing, methods, and follow-up visits of ROP. This article interprets the guidelines and compares them with ROP guidelines/consensus in China, providing a reference for domestic peers.

Retinopathy of prematurity is a pathophysiological condition that occurs in relation to abnormal proliferation in the retinal vessels in premature babies. Its exact pathogenesis is not known. In Turkey, the increased chance of survival in premature babies with much younger gestational age and much lower birth weight in parallel with the developments in neonatal care causes retinopathy of prematurity, which has led to vision problems and blindness to emerge as a more frequent problem. Early diagnosis and timely and appropriate treatment of retinopathy of prematurity contributes to the developmental process and increases the quality of life by preventing vision loss. It should be kept in mind that retinopathy of prematurity may also lead to serious medicolegal problems.

Diabetes and periodontitis are chronic non-communicable diseases independently associated with mortality and have a bidirectional relationship.
To update the evidence for their epidemiological and mechanistic associations and re-examine the impact of effective periodontal therapy upon metabolic control (glycated haemoglobin, HbA1C).
There is strong evidence that people with periodontitis have elevated risk for dysglycaemia and insulin resistance. Cohort studies among people with diabetes demonstrate significantly higher HbA1C levels in patients with periodontitis (versus periodontally healthy patients), but there are insufficient data among people with type 1 diabetes. Periodontitis is also associated with an increased risk of incident type 2 diabetes.
Mechanistic links between periodontitis and diabetes involve elevations in interleukin (IL)-1-β, tumour necrosis factor-α, IL-6, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio, oxidative stress and Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2/4 expression.
Periodontal therapy is safe and effective in people with diabetes, and it is associated with reductions in HbA1C of 0.27-0.48% after 3 months, although studies involving longer-term follow-up are inconclusive.
The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) report consensus guidelines for physicians, oral healthcare professionals and patients to improve early diagnosis, prevention and comanagement of diabetes and periodontitis.

UNASSIGNED: Mechanistic links between periodontitis and diabetes involve elevations in interleukin (IL)-1-β, tumour necrosis factor-α, IL-6, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio, oxidative stress and Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2/4 expression.
METHODS: Periodontal therapy is safe and effective in people with diabetes, and it is associated with reductions in HbA1C of 0.27-0.48% after 3 months, although studies involving longer-term follow-up are inconclusive.
