The menisci increase the stability of the tibio-femoral joint, distribute axial load, absorb shock, and provide nutrition and lubrification to the knee articular cartilage. Therefore, is it clear the importance of the meniscus on the overall knee function and the need to preserve it during arthroscopic surgery. However, according to many registry databases, meniscectomy is still the most performed meniscus surgery. In a percentage of patients, knee pain and swelling, as well as bone edema on the tibial plateau, could follow meniscus resection; this constellation of symptoms is known as \"post-meniscectomy syndrome\". If this syndrome is not promptly managed, a rapid worsening of the symptoms and develop of knee osteoarthritis could be expected. While dealing with such condition, the clinician must perform first an accurate clinical examination and a full radiological evaluation. If the patient is candidate for surgery, the replacement of the resected tissue should be performed: a meniscus allograft should be implanted in case of previous total meniscectomy or a meniscus scaffold if the patients has an history of a previous partial resection. The present article represents a comprehensive review of the literature and aims to discuss basic science, preoperative planning and evaluation, indication, surgical technique, and outcomes of the lateral collagen meniscus implant (CMI), a biologic scaffold aimed at replacing partial meniscal defects.

UNASSIGNED: This narrative review aims to detail the indications, technique, and published outcomes of the bridge in slot technique for lateral meniscus allograft transplantation (LMAT) and to serve as a concise reference for orthopaedists looking to incorporate this method into their practice.
UNASSIGNED: The menisci are crucial to normal knee function but are commonly injured; partial and subtotal meniscectomy are frequently performed to address meniscal pathology. Following these procedures, a substantial number of patients go on to develop degenerative joint changes accompanied by pain and disability. LMAT is an attractive option for young, active, lateral meniscal-deficient patients who seek pain relief and improved function but who are not yet prepared to undergo arthroplasty. In the properly indicated patient, the bridge in slot technique is a reliable and effective method for LMAT.
UNASSIGNED: Using a narrative style, this review outlines the indications and preoperative assessment for LMAT, the detailed technical steps for the bridge in slot technique, postoperative considerations, and trends in the surgical outcomes literature. The presented technique is consistent with the senior author\'s clinical experience and with published literature and the discussed outcomes are elicited from a focused review of recent peer-reviewed sources.
UNASSIGNED: The bridge in slot technique is a reliable and effective method for LMAT and is supported by the literature. This technique may confidently be used in patients with severe lateral meniscal pathology who are not yet candidates for arthroplasty.

UNASSIGNED: Clinical outcomes of surgical repairs for tears of the lateral meniscus posterior root (LMPR) in patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) have not been comprehensively investigated.
UNASSIGNED: To systematically review the clinical, radiographic, and arthroscopic results of surgical repairs for tears of the LMPR in patients undergoing ACLR.
UNASSIGNED: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4.
UNASSIGNED: A systematic electronic search of the PubMed and Embase databases was performed to identify studies reporting clinical, radiographic, or arthroscopic results of surgical repairs for tears of the LMPR in patients undergoing ACLR. Each included study was abstracted regarding study characteristics, patient characteristics, surgical technique, and outcome measures. The methodological quality of the included studies was analyzed according to the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) criteria.
UNASSIGNED: Nine studies were included in this systematic review, representing a total of 215 knees in 215 patients. Overall, 123 side-to-side repairs and 89 pullout repairs were performed for tears of the LMPR during ACLR. After a mean follow-up of 33.9 months, significant improvements (P < .05) were found in the mean Lysholm score (from 58.3 to 91.4) as well as the mean International Knee Documentation Committee subjective score (from 61.1 to 87.2). Weightbearing anteroposterior radiographs of 41 patients showed no significant narrowing of lateral joint space width. On magnetic resonance imaging scans, 31 patients demonstrated no significant progression of chondral lesions, and no significant decreases in meniscal extrusion on coronal planes were reported in another 76 patients. The complete/partial healing was 93.6% on second-look arthroscopy after side-to-side repairs for radial tears of the LMPR. The MINORS value showed a high risk of bias for all 9 studies.
UNASSIGNED: Patients with tears of the LMPR associated with ACL injuries achieved favorable functional scores after ACLR and LMPR repairs, and the side-to-side repair for radial tears of the LMPR succeeded in a high meniscal healing rate of >90%. However, the authors of this review were unable to definitively conclude whether LMPR repairs fully restore the hoop stress of the lateral meniscus.

UNASSIGNED: The occurrence of rapid chondrolysis after partial lateral meniscectomy is rare. The pathophysiology, risk factors, and outcomes of treatment have not been established.
UNASSIGNED: The primary aim of this study was to perform a scoping review of the literature to determine the potential risk factors and pathogenesis of rapid chondrolysis. The secondary objective was to report outcomes of treatment.
    UNASSIGNED: Systematic (scoping) review.
UNASSIGNED: A scoping review of the literature was conducted in accordance with the framework of Arksey and O\'Malley. A search strategy based on the terms \"chondrolysis\" AND \"knee,\" \"chondrolysis\" AND \"meniscus,\" and \"chondral damage\" AND \"lateral meniscus\" was applied to the PubMed database on March 31, 2020. All relevant studies were included. Patient demographics and clinical data were extracted from these studies and analyzed in order to investigate the potential risk factors, pathogenesis, and outcomes of treatment for rapid chondrolysis.
UNASSIGNED: Five articles (22 cases) featuring rapid chondrolysis in the lateral compartment after partial lateral meniscectomy were identified and included. The condition occurred most frequently in patients who were young (mean age, 25.6 years), male (20/22 cases; 91%), and participating in high-intensity sports (19/22 cases; 86.4%) within 1 year of the index procedure. Half of the included study population underwent surgery for a radial tear. All professional athletes (13/13) returned to the preinjury level of sport. All authors of included studies suggested that the main causal risk factor was mechanical focal cartilage overload in the lateral compartment of the knee.
UNASSIGNED: Rapid chondrolysis after partial lateral meniscectomy is a rare condition that typically occurs within 12 months of the index procedure. Younger age, male sex, high-intensity sports participation, and some meniscal tear patterns (eg, radial tear) are potentially important risk factors. Return-to-sport rates at short-term follow up are high, but no long-term studies were identified. The pathogenesis of rapid chondrolysis seems to relate to mechanical focal cartilage overload.

BACKGROUND: Popliteomeniscal fascicles (PMF) are considered the posterolateral meniscocapsular extensions which connect the lateral meniscus to the edge of the tibia. PMFs disruption leads to hypermobility of the lateral meniscus with pain and locking sensation. Recognition and treatment of PMFs tear remain very challenging. The aim of this systematic review is to collect and analyse the articles concerning popliteomeniscal fascicle disruption from diagnosis to surgical approach.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and EMBASE were searched. Various combinations of the keywords \"Popliteomeniscal Fascicles\", \"Lateral Meniscus\", \"Popliteal Hiatus\", \"Posterolateral Corner\", \"Tear\" and \"Surgical Repair\" were used. The original literature search identified a total of 85 articles comprising of duplicates. The PRISMA guidilines were followed. Studies in English language and published in peer-reviewed journals were included. Articles with level of evidence I to IV were included RESULTS: A total of three articles were included in the qualitative analysis. All the articles included are retrospective case series, with a level of evidence IV. Studies concerning patients with pre-operative imaging MRI and clinical assessment, reporting surgical technique and clinical outcomes assessed by physical examination and/or subjective evaluation scales were analysed.
CONCLUSIONS: MRI and the Figure-4 test allow to assess PMF tears pre-operatively. Arthroscopic evaluation constitutes the gold standard to confirm the diagnosis. Although surgery is considered resolutive for symptoms, there is still controversy about the most appropriate technique. Further higher quality studies are required.

Meniscal root tears are defined as radial tears located within 1 cm from the meniscal attachment or a bony root avulsion. This injury is biomechanically comparable to a total meniscectomy, leading to compromised hoop stresses resulting in decreased tibiofemoral contact area and increased contact pressures in the involved compartment. These changes are detrimental to the articular cartilage and ultimately lead to the development of early osteoarthritis. Surgical repair is the treatment of choice in patients without significant osteoarthritis (Outerbridge grades 3 or 4). Root repairs have been reported to improve clinical outcomes, decrease meniscal extrusion and slow the onset of degenerative changes. Here we describe the anatomy, biomechanics, clinical evaluation, treatment methods, outcomes, and post-operative rehabilitation for posterior meniscal root tears.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US) in the diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial meniscus and lateral meniscus tears in people with suspected ACL and/or meniscal tears.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Web of Science and the Cochrane library were searched from inception to March 2014. All prospective studies of the diagnostic accuracy of MRI or US against arthroscopy as the reference standard were included in the systematic review. Studies with a retrospective design and those with evidence of verification bias were excluded. Methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. A meta-analysis of studies evaluating MRI to calculate the pooled sensitivity and specificity for each target condition was performed using a bivariate model with random effects. Sub-group and sensitivity analysis were used to examine the effect of methodological and other study variables.
RESULTS: There were 14 studies included in the meta-analysis of the accuracy of MRI for ACL tears, 19 studies included for medial meniscal tears and 19 studies for lateral meniscal tears. The summary estimates of sensitivity and specificity of MRI were 87 % (95 % CI 77-94 %) and 93 % (95 % CI 91-96 %), respectively, for ACL tears; 89 % (95 % CI 83-94 %) and 88 % (95 % CI 82-93 %), respectively, for medial meniscal tears; and 78 % (95 % CI 66-87 %) and 95 % (95 % CI 91-97 %), respectively, for lateral meniscal tears. Magnetic field strength had no significant effect on accuracy. Most studies had a high or unclear risk of bias. There were an insufficient number of studies that evaluated US to perform a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic accuracy studies of MRI and applies strict exclusion criteria in relation to the risk of verification bias. The risk of bias in most studies is high or unclear in relation to the reference standard. Concerns regarding the applicability of patient selection are also present in most studies.

OBJECTIVE: Hypermobility of the posterior portion of the lateral meniscus has been reported in several recent case reports and small case series. Pathophysiology and optimal treatment have not been fully elucidated. Our purpose was to evaluate results following arthroscopic stabilization.
METHODS: Over a 10-year period, 13 knees were diagnosed at the time of arthroscopy as having hypermobility of the posterior portion of the lateral meniscus in the absence of a discrete tear or discoid morphology. Clinical presentation, pre-operative MRI findings, arthroscopic findings, and repair technique were retrospectively reviewed. Most recent outcomes data were gathered via a telephone interview utilizing the IKDC-9 questionnaire.
RESULTS: Eleven of 12 patients presented primarily with mechanical symptoms. Duration of symptoms ranged from 7 months to over 10 years. Eight of 12 patients did not recall any history of trauma. Twelve of 13 pre-operative MRIs did not identify a meniscal tear. Stabilization was obtained by fixation of the meniscus to the posterior capsule by various techniques. Average follow-up was 4 years (range 6 months to 10.7 years). Subjective current knee function averaged 8.0 (range 3.5-10) on a scale of 0-10. Knee pain severity averaged 2.2 (range 0-4) on a scale of 0-10. Pain frequency averaged 3.3 (range 0-9) on a scale of 0-10. Better results were seen in younger patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Hypermobility of the posterior portion of the lateral meniscus can successfully be treated with arthroscopic repair to the posterior capsule.
    METHODS: IV.
