BACKGROUND: Given the paucity of current safety studies related to e-cigarettes, there are no definitive studies on whether e-cigarettes cause oral mucosal lesions or even oral cancer. Although it is still undetermined whether e-cigarettes are harmless, an increasing number of teenagers choose to smoke e-cigarettes and believe that they are not harmful to the human body.
OBJECTIVE: This aims to determine whether e-cigarettes cause damage to the oral mucosa. This study also aims to evaluate the association between e-cigarette smoking and oral mucous membrane lesions in young adults. The objectives are to (1) compare the oral mucosal conditions in participants with and without e-cigarette smoking habits, (2) assess the effect of the amount of e-cigarette smoking on oral mucosal conditions, and (3) assess the effect of the duration of e-cigarette smoking on oral mucosal conditions.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 304 youths aged 15 to 24 years (n=152, 50% who smoke only e-cigarettes and n=152, 50% who do not smoke e-cigarettes or cigarettes) will be divided into 2 groups for a controlled study. Whether e-cigarettes cause oral mucosal lesions will be verified by comparing the odds of oral mucosal lesions in the 2 experimental groups. For this experiment, the predefined power is 80% (P=.04), and the predefined proportions of groups 1 and 2 are 11% and 2.5%, respectively.
RESULTS: This experiment is at the conceptualization phase and has not yet been carried out. Experimenters have not been recruited and no data have been collected.
CONCLUSIONS: e-Cigarettes are still an unfamiliar topic to the public, and it is still unknown whether they can cause damage to the oral mucosa. This experiment aims to find out whether there is a link between the 2. There are still many limitations in this study, such as the lack of categorization of e-cigarettes and the lack of testing methods for oral mucosal status. These limitations are expected to be addressed in the future as the experiment is formally conducted and further optimized.

UNASSIGNED: In Turkey, dentists working in public dental care centers were deployed in COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing (CICT) teams during the pandemic. This study aims to explore the experiences of the dentists assigned to teams undertaking COVID-19 CICT practices to determine how healthcare workers should be supported when working in pandemic response and other crises.
UNASSIGNED: The sample of this qualitative, phenomenological study consisted of thirty four public dentists assigned to COVID-19 CICT practices in four metropolitan areas of Turkey. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews that were conducted online in August and September 2020. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis.
UNASSIGNED: Six themes were revealed: preparation for CICT, basic requirements, work relations, working conditions, being a dentist assigned to CICT and COVID-19 pandemic management. The dentists complained that they were not appropriately assigned to CICT, as they lacked the preparations and sufficient training. They had to acquire personal protective equipment and other basic needs at their own expense. The working conditions were severe, and they had negative relations at work. The State and the Ministry of Health were criticized for inadequate implementation of institutional measures for COVID-19 pandemic management.
UNASSIGNED: The study showed that dentists were motivated to participate in the management of pandemics and similar crisis situations, but in a negative work environment - where they were deployed without adequate training, preparation, and ensuring their basic needs and requirements were met - they lost this motivation, and experienced stress and feelings of inadequacy.

2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) has been increasingly recognised as a contact allergen and was added to the European baseline series in 2019. In this article (2 parts), the results of an extensive literature review of the clinical aspects of contact allergy/allergic contact dermatitis to HEMA are presented. In part 1, the epidemiology of HEMA contact allergy is discussed and detailed information on published case series and case reports presented. HEMA is an important cause of contact allergy/allergic contact dermatitis in North America and Europe with recent prevalences of >3% in the USA + Canada and 1.5%-3.7% in Europe. Currently, most cases are caused by nail cosmetics, both in consumers and professional nail stylists. In our literature review, we have found 24 studies presenting case series of patients with allergic contact dermatitis attributed to HEMA and 168 case reports. However, the presence of HEMA in the products causing ACD was established in only a minority. Part 2 will discuss cross- and co-sensitisation, and other skin reactions to HEMA, will assess whether HEMA is the most frequent (meth)acrylate allergen and how sensitive HEMA as a screening agent is, investigate the presence of HEMA in commercial products and provide practical information on patch testing procedures.

OBJECTIVE: Are patients with symptomatic unilateral maxillary sinusitis sent for a dental evaluation of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS)?
METHODS: The medical records of all patients diagnosed with sinusitis at a university Ear-nose and throat (ENT) clinic from 2010 to 2015 were scrutinized for symptomatic unilateral maxillary sinusitis verified on CT. Any dental evaluation was recorded, as well as symptoms of OMS, duration to dental evaluation, diagnosis of OMS and dental treatment.
RESULTS: A total of 1338 patients diagnosed with sinusitis were screened; 172 had unilateral maxillary sinusitis and 48% (82/172) OMS. 34% did not have any dental evaluation at all. Patients referred to local specialist dental care waited a median of 11 weeks for evaluation and a median of 15 weeks further for dental treatment. Symptoms more frequently reported in OMS patients were foul smell or taste (43.9% vs 11.1%, p < .0001), purulent rhinorrhea (40% vs 19.1%, p = .015) than non-OMS patients. The OMS group also reported more frequently that they were active smokers (31.7% vs 10%, p = .0005).
CONCLUSIONS: OMS was found in 48% of unilateral maxillary sinusitis and one-third of the patients with unilateral maxillary sinusitis had no dental evaluation. Low awareness of OMS could delay diagnosis and treatment.

Herein, presenting a case of a 42-year-old female with the chief complaint of dysphagia. The problem was assumed to be of dental origin, due to the onset of dental pain followed by dysphagia. A cervical radiograph revealed the presence of osteophytic lipping which proved to be the cause of dysphagia. Confusing and overlapping disease entities showing similar symptoms need thorough investigation. Dysphagia related to cervical spondylosis may have a direct connection with the person\'s occupation. Dentistry is considered a potentially hazardous occupation with regard to musculoskeletal disorders. However, additional studies are required to understand the occupational hazards faced by dentists.
