    UNASSIGNED: A versatile biomarker, survivin, is highly expressed in proliferating cells of multiple cancers in humans and animals. It is an apoptosis-regulating protein, engaging in a cascade of reactions that involve several other genes and protein interactions. Currently, researchers are investigating its therapeutic potential due to the evidence linking its overexpression to advanced-stage lung cancer. This review is centered around examining survivin-related molecular mechanisms and its therapeutic role specifically in lung cancer. Our objective is to discuss the role of survivin in prognosis and treatment response, shedding light on immune-targeted therapies, as well as outlining future directions for survivin-based vaccines in lung cancer.
    UNASSIGNED: The PubMed database and the United States National Library of Medicine search engine at the National Institutes of Health were searched on 24 August 2023 to identify published research studies. Searching \"((((((airway [Title/Abstract]) OR (lung [Title/Abstract])) OR (pulm[Title/Abstract])) OR (bronch[Title/Abstract])) OR (nslc[Title/Abstract])) AND (((cancer[Title/Abstract]) OR (carcino[Title/Abstract])) OR (oncol[Title/Abstract]))) AND (survivin[Title/Abstract])\" gave 728 results. After screening the title and abstracts and excluding the review articles 168 titles were shortlisted and full text studied. The discussions are added to relevant sections.
    UNASSIGNED: Survivin is a cell cycle-dependent, inhibitor of apoptosis protein that contributes to carcinogenesis, tumor vascularization, metastasis, and treatment resistance. Several treatments that impact survivin either directly or indirectly have been reported as effective in treating lung cancer. Immunity-based therapy, a novel approach known for its targeted nature and minimal side effects, is currently under investigation for lung cancer treatment. Emerging survivin-centered vaccines exhibit promising attributes in terms of safety, effectiveness, and ability to stimulate an immune response. These factors point towards a significant potential for advancing the future of lung cancer prevention and enhancing overall survival rates.
    UNASSIGNED: Nuclear survivin is a potential biomarker for advanced non-small cell lung cancer. It plays a role in determining drug responsiveness and is found to be significantly elevated in cases of resistance to chemotherapy. Multiple compounds and immunization strategies have been identified to impact lung cancer cells; however, they are currently in the early stages of phase I or phase II clinical trials. The substantial promise of survivin-based immunogenicity-focused treatments warrants in-depth investigation and exploration.

    Early detection, diagnosis, and treatment take on critical significance in preventing and treating bladder cancer. As indicated by numerous studies, survivin can serve as a biomarker of bladder cancer, whereas the results of a wide variety of studies have been controversial. This paper is to assess the accuracy of survivin in the diagnosis of bladder cancer by a meta-analysis. The studies regarding the diagnosis of bladder cancer using survivin were systematically retrieved from the CNKI, WanFang, CBM, VIP, Web of science, cochrane library and pubmed were extracted, and the literature quality was assessed. Meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 16.0 MP. 2,082 relevant studies were searched, and 40 studies were finally covered for meta-analysis. The pooled specificity and pooled sensitivity of survivin mRNA was 0.95 (95%CI: 0.91, 0.97) and 0.94 (95%CI: 0.88, 0.97). The pooled specificity and pooled sensitivity of survivin protein reached 0.95 (95%CI: 0.90, 0.97) and 0.87 (95%CI: 0.78, 0.92). The pooled positive likelihood ratio, pooled negative likelihood ratio, the area under the curve, and diagnostic odds ratio for survivin mRNA reached 17.7 (95%CI: 10.3, 30.6), 0.07 (95%CI: 0.04, 0.12), 0.98 (95%CI: 0.97, 0.99) and 266 (95%CI: 114, 621), respectively. For survivin protein was 16.4 (95%CI: 7.9, 33.9), 0.14 (95%CI: 0.08, 0.24), 0.97 (95%CI: 0.95, 0.98) and 117 (95%CI: 38, 357), respectively. Survivin takes on great significance in diagnosing bladder cancer. However, due to some limitations in the number and quality of covered studies, this conclusion should be validated through additional higher quality clinical studies.

    The objective of the study was to compare the expression of immunohistochemical (IHC) markers of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) (non-transformed group) to those of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) transformed from OSMF (transformed group). The search for comparative cross-sectional studies was carried out in PubMed and Scopus abiding to the PICO criteria, where expression of IHC markers in OSMF were compared with that of OSCC transformed from OSMF. The cellular distribution, number of positive cases, staining intensity, and mean immunoreactive score (IRS) of each IHC marker were evaluated in both groups. A total of 14 studies were included in the systematic review, in which immunoexpression of 15 epithelial and 4 connective tissue biomarkers were evaluated. Expression of β1-integrin, OCT-3, CD1a, CD207, survivin, Dickkopf-1, COX-2, hTERT, CTGF, MDM2, Ki-67, and α-SMA were increased during transformation of OSMF to OSCC. Conversely, expression of PTEN and lysyl oxidase decreased during transformation of OSMF to OSCC. Expression of a group of epithelial markers, such as COX2, hTERT, CTGF, survivin, MDM2, and p53, was 38 times lower in the non-transformed group cases compared to transformed group cases (95% CI: 58% to 10%; p = 0.01; and I2 = 90%). Meta-analysis of all markers involved in cell metabolism/apoptosis, which included β1-integrin along with the above markers also suggested 42 times lower expression in the non-transformed group as compared to the transformed group (95% CI: 58% to 10%; p = 0.01; and I2 = 90%). Sub-group analyses on cytoplasmic and nuclear epithelial markers were inconclusive. Meta-analysis of connective tissue markers was also inconclusive. No publication bias was found. Instead of delving into numerous markers without a strong basis for their use, it is advisable to further study the markers identified in this study to explore their clinical utility.

    Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and ranks second among causes for cancer-related death in women. Gene technology has led to the recognition that breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease composed of different biological subtypes, and genetic profiling enables the response to chemotherapy to be predicted. This fact emphasizes the importance of selecting sensitive diagnostic and prognostic markers in the early disease stage and more efficient targeted treatments for this disease. One such prognostic marker appears to be survivin. Many studies have shown that survivin is strongly expressed in different types of cancers. Its overexpression has been demonstrated in breast cancer, and high activity of the survivin gene has been associated with a poor prognosis and worse survival rates.

    Background: Previous studies have shown that survivin has potential prognostic value in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, the results remained controversial until now. Thus, to investigate the influence of survivin expression on prognosis and clinical characteristics in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, we performed this meta-analysis. Methods: We searched PubMed, PMC, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure electronic databases from their establishment to 1 March 2021. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and the pooled odds ratio (OR) were used to evaluate the prognostic and clinicopathological values of survivin in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. We used the I2 statistic and the Q test to evaluate heterogeneity. Meta-regression, publication bias, and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. Results: A total of 26 eligible studies with 2278 patients were included in our meta-analysis. We found that the expression of survivin is connected with poor overall survival (HR=1.94; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.52-2.48; P<0.001), lymph node metastasis (OR=3.01; 95% CI=2.31- 3.91; P<0.001), local recurrence (OR=2.40; 95% CI=1.60-3.61, P<0.001), distant metastasis (OR=2.58; 95% CI=1.74-3.84, P<0.001), and a higher clinical stage (OR=4.58; 95% CI=2.81-7.47, P<0.001). However, no significant correlations were found between survivin expression and radio-sensitivity (OR=1.33; 95% CI=0.25-7.17, P=0.737) or gender (OR=1.02; 95% CI=0.75-1.39, P=0.887). Conclusions: This meta-analysis indicates that survivin could be used as a biomarker for predicting prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

    BACKGROUND: Survivin has been recently identified as a promising novel therapeutic target and prognostic marker in different types of cancer. Here we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to better clarify they the precise prognostic and diagnostic value of survivin in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
    METHODS: Database of PubMed (Medline), Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched for related published literature up to September 2020. Pooled hazards ratios (HR) and related 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to estimate the association of survivin expression and survival outcomes in HNSCC patients.
    RESULTS: Twenty eight studies with 4891 patients were finally included in this meta-analysis, the pooled analysis indicated that the survivin expression was significantly correlated with poorer overall survival (OS) (HR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.65-2.47, P < 0.001), and poorer disease-free survival (DFS)/ disease-specific survival (DSS) (HR = 2.03, 95%CI: 1.64-2.52, P < 0.001; HR = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.41-2.60, P < 0.001, receptively). Similar results were observed in subgroup analysis stratified by different cancer types, such as laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) (HR = 1.35, 95%CI: 1.05-1.74, P < 0.001), oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) (HR = 2.45, 95%CI: 1.89-3.17, P < 0.001), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) (HR = 2.53, 95%CI: 1.76-3.62, P < 0.001) and HNSCC (HR = 1.52, 95%CI: 1.25-1.86, P < 0.001). Furthermore, ethnicity-stratified analysis indicated that survivin was significantly associated with poorer OS among both Asian and Non- Asian HNSCC patients (HR = 2.16, 95%CI: 1.76-2.66; HR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.33-1.82, respectively).
    CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that survivin is predictors of worse prognosis in HNSCC patients. Hence, survivin is a potential therapeutic target for HNSCC.

    BACKGROUND: This systematic review aims to assess the effect of cinnamaldehyde on Cav-1 and Survivin expression in epilepsy.
    METHODS: We will search Cochrane Library, PUBMED, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, WANGFANG, VIP, CBM, and CNKI from their inceptions to the March 31, 2020, without language restrictions. Two authors will independently carry out searching literature records, scanning titles and abstracts, full texts, collecting data, and assessing risk of bias. RevMan 5.3 software will be used for statistical analysis.
    RESULTS: This systematic review will investigate whether cinnamaldehyde is effective on Cav-1 and Survivin expression in epilepsy.
    CONCLUSIONS: Its findings will provide helpful evidence for the effect of cinnamaldehyde on Cav-1 and Survivin expression in epilepsy.Systematic review registration: INPLASY202040152.

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, which is characterized by the hyperplasia of synovial tissue. Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, which facilitates the formation of functional T-cell receptor and differentiation of memory T cells. Survivin plays an important role in the expression of major histocompatibility complex molecules and mature dendritic cells, which play the main role in the etiology of RA. This systematic review was conducted to investigate the evidence on the role of survivin as a diagnostic and predictive value in RA patients. All published articles related to the subject of interest and published up to 30 March 2018 were searched in three databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, and Web of Science. After a detailed evaluation of the full-text version of the papers, 23 articles were entered into the study. The elevation of survivin in the preclinical phase of RA and its association with anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibodies suggested it as a predictor of RA. Recently, survivin has been introduced as the biomarker of joint damage and poor response to antirheumatic treatment in RA patients. Based on the evidence, survivin level had high specificity and sensitivity in the diagnosis of RA patients. The results of the reviewed studies demonstrated that a positive survivin level was associated with the presence of anti-CCP antibodies.

    Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. It has poor clinical outcome due to intrinsic or acquired drug resistance. Deregulation of both apoptosis and autophagy contributes to chemotherapy resistance and disease progression. A new member of the inhibitors of apoptosis protein (IAP) family, namely survivin, is selectively overexpressed in tumors, including HNSCC, but not in normal tissues. Thus, it is considered a tumor biomarker. Here, we reviewed survivin expression and function in tumor progression focusing on its nodal role in the regulation of cell apoptosis and autophagy. Based on literature data, survivin targeting may be envisaged as a novel therapeutic strategy.

    To investigate the possible association between survivin c.-31G>C (rs9904341) gene polymorphism and urinary system cancers by a meta-analysis approach.
    Standard electronic literature databases were searched to find eligible studies. The odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs were estimated to find the associations possibility.
    Overall meta-analysis revealed significant associations between c.-31G>C transversion and risk of urinary tract cancers in dominant (OR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.02-1.75; p = 0.035), recessive (OR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.33-1.74; p < 0.001) and homozygote codominant (OR: 1.90; 95% Cl: 1.37-2.62; p < 0.001) genetic models.
    The c.-31G>C transversion might be a risk factor for urinary system cancers. However, more articles with different ethnicities will help to obtain a more accurate conclusion.
