    Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent neuropsychiatric disorders that have emerged as global health concerns. Anxiolytic and antidepressant drugs, such as benzodiazepines, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and tricyclics, are the first line used in treating anxiety and depression. Although these drugs lack efficacy and have a delayed response time and numerous side effects, their widespread abuse and market continue to grow. Over time, traditional practices using natural and phytochemicals as alternative therapies to chemical drugs have emerged to treat many pathological conditions, including anxiety and depression. Recent preclinical studies have demonstrated that the phenolic compound, rosmarinic acid, is effective against several neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. In addition, rosmarinic acid showed various pharmacological effects, such as cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, lung protective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, the potentialities of the use of rosmarinic acid in the treatment of nervous system-related disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are less or not yet reviewed. Therefore, the purpose of this review was to present several preclinical and clinical studies, when available, from different databases investigating the effects of rosmarinic acid on anxiety and depression. These studies showed that rosmarinic acid produces advantageous effects on anxiety and depression through its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This review will examine and discuss the possibility that the anxiolytic and anti-depressive effects of rosmarinic acid could be associated with its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

    Polyphenolic acids are the widely occurring natural products in almost each herbal plant, among which rosmarinic acid (RA, C18H16O8) is well-known, and is present in over 160 species belonging to many families, especially the Lamiaceae. Aside from this herbal ingredient, dozens of its natural derivatives have also been isolated and characterized from many natural plants. In recent years, with the increasing focus on the natural products as alternative treatments, a large number of pharmacological studies have been carried out to demonstrate the various biological activities of RA such as anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-diabetes, anti-virus, anti-tumor, neuroprotection, hepatoprotection, etc. In addition, investigations concerning its biosynthesis, extraction, analysis, clinical applications, and pharmacokinetics have also been performed. Although many achievements have been made in various research aspects, there still exist some problems or issues to be answered, especially its toxicity and bioavailability. Thus, we hope that in the case of natural products, the present review can not only provide a comprehensive understanding on RA covering its miscellaneous research fields, but also highlight some of the present issues and future perspectives worth investigating later, in order to help us utilize this polyphenolic acid more efficiently, widely, and safely.

    Nowadays, the worldwide interest is growing to use medicinal plants and their active constituents to develop new potent medicines with fewer side effects. Precise dietary compounds have prospective beneficial applications for various neurodegenerative ailments. Rosmarinic acid is a polyphenol and is detectable most primarily in many Lamiaceae families, for instance, Rosmarinus officinalis also called rosemary. This review prepared a broad and updated literature review on rosmarinic acid elucidating its biological activities on some nervous system disorders. Rosmarinic acid has significant antinociceptive, neuroprotective, and neuroregenerative effects. In this regard, we classified and discussed our findings in different nervous system disorders including Alzheimer\'s disease, epilepsy, depression, Huntington\'s disease, familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson\'s disease, cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, spinal cord injury, stress, anxiety, and pain.

    Rosmarinic acid is a bioactive phytochemical that can be found in many herbs as ethnomedicines. It possesses remarkable pharmacological activities, and thus leading to its exploration as a therapeutic drug in diabetes treatment recently. This article reviews the extraction and fractionation techniques for plant-based natural rosmarinic acid and its anti-diabetic potential based on literature data published in journals, books, and patents from 1958 to 2017. Factors affecting the performance of rosmarinic acid extraction and fractionation such as operating temperature, time, solvent to sample ratio and eluent system are compiled and discussed in detail. The inhibitory action of rosmarinic acid against sugar digestive enzymes, and protective action towards pancreatic β-cell dysfunction and glucolipotoxicity mediated oxidative stress are also critically reviewed. The optimal parameters are largely dependent on the applied extraction and fractionation techniques, as well as the nature of plant samples. Previous studies have proven the potent role of rosmarinic acid to control plasma glucose level and increase insulin sensitivity in hyperglycemia. Although rosmarinic acid is readily absorbed by human body, its mechanism after consumption is remained unclear. Intensive studies should be well planned to determine the dosage and toxicity level of rosmarinic acid for efficacy and safe consumption.

    BACKGROUND: Currently, many trials have been conducted to investigate the beneficial and harmful effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza depside salts for infusion for treating patients with angina pectoris. It is important to systematically and criticallyevaluate the existing literature into providing a pooled effect to examine outcomes of angina pectoris with Salvia miltiorrhiza depside salts for infusion.
    OBJECTIVE: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to determine the clinical curative effect and safety of Salvia miltiorrhiza depside salts for infusion for angina pectoris and provide clear evidence to inform clinical practice.
    METHODS: The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and other four electronic Chinese databases were searched to identify relevant randomized controlled trials. Methodological quality and reporting quality of eligible studies was evaluated by using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and CONSORT for traditional Chinese medicine respectively. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.3 software.
    RESULTS: Fifty-six randomized controlled trials involving 5503 patients were included. Most of the trials were classified as having an unclear risk of bias because of poor reported methodology. The main outcomes are improvements in angina symptoms, ECG improvement and reduction of nitroglycerin use. CHD mortality or rate of CHD events was not reported in any trial. Meta-analysis showed that Salvia miltiorrhiza depside salts for infusion combined with conventional treatment was better than conventional treatment alone in improving angina symptoms (RR= 1.28, 95% CI 1.24 to 1.31, p < 0.00001), the frequency of angina attack (time/week)(WMD=-1.47, 95% CI -2.16 to -0.78), reducing clinical symptom scores (WMD=-0.55, 95% CI -0.57 to -0.53, p < 0.000011), increasing physical limitation scores (WMD= 7.68, 95% CI 1.48 to 13.88, p = 0.02), improving ECG (RR= 1.32,95% CI 1.27 to 1.38, p < 0.00001) and reducing dosage of nitroglycerin (RR= 1.50, 95% CI: 1.26 to 1.77, p < 0.00001). In addition, Egger\'s regression tests was found there was publication bias (Kendall\' tau= 0.36, p < 0.01).
    CONCLUSIONS: The current systematic review indicates relevant evidence for Salvia miltiorrhiza depside salts for infusion combined with conventional treatments treating patient with angina pectoris. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the low methodological quality, the risk of publication bias, lack of important clinically relevant outcomes and inadequate reporting on adverse events of the included trials. International methodological and reporting standards could help researchers conduct well designed trials and generate better evidence for Salvia miltiorrhiza depside salts for infusion.
