Cardiac arrest survival depends upon chest compression quality. Real-time audiovisual feedback may improve compression guideline adherence, particularly with the more specific 2015 guidelines.
Subjects included healthcare providers from multiple U.S. hospitals. Compression rate and depth were recorded using standard manikins and real-time audiovisual feedback defibrillators (ZOLL R Series). Subjects were enrolled before (n = 756) and after (n = 995) release of the 2015 guidelines, which define narrower compression targets. Subjects performed 2 min of continuous compressions before and after activation of feedback. The percentage of compressions meeting appropriate rate/depth targets was determined before and after release of the 2015 guidelines.
An increase in compression guideline adherence was observed with use of feedback before [68.7% to 96.3%, p < .001] and after [16.6% to 94.1%, p < .001] release of the 2015 guidelines. The proportion of subjects requiring feedback to achieve adherence was higher for the 2015 guidelines [28.6% vs. 78.5%, OR 9.12, 95% CI 7.33-11.35, p < .001].
The use of real-time audiovisual feedback increases adherence to chest compression guidelines, particularly with application of the narrower 2015 guidelines targets for compression depth and rate.

Preclinical pediatric emergencies are rare events and are therefore often associated with stress and uncertainty for emergency medical service personnel. To ensure adequate treatment of pediatric patients a variety of different cognitive aids exist (e.g. books, apps, rulers, weight-adapted bag systems). Especially the size specifications of the medical equipment and the dosage of emergency medication are individually very different in children and are dependent on parameters, such as body height and weight. Therefore, cognitive aids often enable length measurement whereby it is possible to draw conclusions on body weight for calculating the child\'s medication dosage. These aids may help to avoid the wrong medication dose or the wrong therapy of children but uncritical and untrained usage of these aids carries a potential risk of mistakes. This recommendation gives an overview of the general requirements and different problems of cognitive aids and should help improve the general framework and the rational basis for the use and further development of cognitive aids in emergency medicine.

OBJECTIVE: We present simple formatting rules derived from an extensive literature review that can improve the format of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), and potentially increase the likelihood of being used.
METHODS: We recently conducted a review of the literature from medicine, psychology, design, and human factors engineering on characteristics of guidelines that are associated with their use in practice, covering both the creation and communication of content. The formatting rules described in this article are derived from that review.
RESULTS: The formatting rules are grouped into three categories that can be easily applied to CPGs: first, Vivid: make it stand out; second, Intuitive: match it to the audience\'s expectations, and third, Visual: use alternatives to text. We highlight rules supported by our broad literature review and provide specific \'how to\' recommendations for individuals and groups developing evidence-based materials for clinicians.
CONCLUSIONS: The way text documents are formatted influences their accessibility and usability. Optimizing the formatting of CPGs is a relatively inexpensive intervention and can be used to facilitate the dissemination of evidence in healthcare. Applying simple formatting principles to make documents more vivid, intuitive, and visual is a practical approach that has the potential to influence the usability of guidelines and to influence the extent to which guidelines are read, remembered, and used in practice.

\"Color blindness\" is a variable trait, including individuals with just slight color vision deficiency to those rare individuals with a complete lack of color perception. Approximately 75% of those with color impairment are green diminished; most of those remaining are red diminished. Red-Green color impairment is sex linked with the vast majority being male. The deficiency results in reds and greens being perceived as shades of yellow; therefore red-green images presented to the public will not illustrate regions of distinction to these individuals. Tools are available to authors wishing to accommodate those with color vision deficiency; most notable are components in FIJI (an extension of ImageJ) and Adobe Photoshop. Using these tools, hues of magenta may be substituted for red in red-green images resulting in striking definition for both the color sighted and color impaired. Web-based tools may be used (importantly) by color challenged individuals to convert red-green images archived in web-accessible journal articles into two-color images, which they may then discern.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the development of a treatment guideline for the effective case management of malaria in children at the home level.
METHODS: Thirty-three mothers selected from 11 communities in a rural health district, community members and the research team developed a guideline for treatment of malaria at home by caregivers using a participatory approach. This was done in phases using modified focus group discussion sessions. Suggested ideas were depicted in illustrations by a graphic artist.
RESULTS: A guideline which illustrated the presentation of clinical types of malaria, the appropriate steps to take for each type and the correct dosage schedule of chloroquine (based on the age of the child) for treatment of uncomplicated malaria was developed. The guideline was in cartoon format and the script in the local language.
CONCLUSIONS: Use of a participatory approach was found acceptable and effective in the development of the guideline. This approach is therefore recommended irrespective of the target population or the intervention to be developed. Practice implications Preparation of educational materials with contributions from end users does not only build capacity at the local level but also increases the acceptability and ownership of such materials.

Authoring clinical guidelines as well as observing the execution and the maintenance of these is a time-consuming and cumbersome task. Usually, clinical guidelines are represented in conceptual models, which are very hard to understand by domain experts. Furthermore, to analyze the effectiveness and usefulness of clinical guidelines they need to be shown in connection with the patients\' data. In this overview book chapter we present different methods to visualize clinical guidelines, patients\' data, and the connection thereof. Finally, we illustrate how the different visualization methods support the various tasks in plan management.
