This study aimed to evaluate the clinical evolution of patients with diabetic foot ulcer treated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using the Bates-Jensen (BJ) scale. A total of 21 patients were monitored, with an average age of 58 years. Patients underwent the standard treatment protocol of the institution, supplemented with aPDT utilizing 0.01% methylene blue (MB) and laser irradiation (660 nm, 100 mW, 6 J per point). Following aPDT, the lesions were protected with hydrofiber dressings containing silver. The Bates-Jensen Scale was employed at pre-treatment and post-aPDT sessions to assess lesion progression. The results demonstrated a significant difference between pre- and post-treatment values in the overall BJ score. The use of MB in aPDT proved to be an effective, safe, well-tolerated treatment with high patient adherence and the potential for implementation in the care of diabetic foot conditions.

BACKGROUND: Secondary infections of leishmaniasis and histoplasmosis in patients with advanced HIV are still a concern in low- and middle-income countries. The most common drugs for the treatment of both infections may be problematic mainly due to their toxicity.
UNASSIGNED: The present study aimed to report a case in which a concurrent oral manifestation of leishmaniasis and histoplasmosis in a hospitalized patient with HIV was managed with a combination of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjuvant treatment. In addition to the use of conventional systemic oral drugs, a single aPDT session followed by two PBMT sessions was proposed, which resulted in complete wound healing within four days.
CONCLUSIONS: Given the complexity of the current case, PBMT in combination with aPDT may be considered as an effective adjuvant option for managing oral infectious lesions of histoplasmosis and leishmaniasis in immunocompromised patients.

Pericoronitis is a common disease that impacts the quality of life of individuals during the eruption of the third molars. Among the main clinical signs and symptoms reported were the presence of gingival operculum, pain, difficulty swallowing, and trismus with functional impairment. The present study shows a case report of pericoronitis treated with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), using a new oral formulation (INPI BR 1020170253902) of methylene blue. A female patient, 27 years old, presenting initial pericoronitis, had her pain, mouth opening, and swelling evaluated. She was submitted to a protocol of irrigation with sterile saline and photodynamic therapy using the new MB at 0.005% concentration and irradiation with low-intensity laser λ = 660 nm, 9 J per point, and radiant exposure of 318 J/cm2. The variables were evaluated on 4th day after aPDT. There was a 100% improvement in pain and an increase of 1,3 cm in mouth opening. There was no difference in the edema before and after aPDT using the new MB formula. Although the results are based on a single case report, suggest the hypothesis that aPDT using the new MB formula is an efficient therapy in the treatment of pain and trismus caused by the early stage of pericoronitis. Well-conducted randomized clinical trials are needed to compare this new formulation with conventional aPDT for further generalization of results.

Dermatophytosis is a superficial skin infection that widely effects companion animals. Miscrosporum canis is one of the most prevalent species isolated from dogs and cats, and because of the serious zoonotic potential, short-term treatment regimens are preferred to prevent the spread of disease either by direct contact or through contamination of the environment. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) has emerged as a promising strategy able to kill effectively a wide range of pathogens in a short period with minimal morbidity . In this case report, a 7-year-old male dog was diagnosed with dermatophytosis caused by M. canis. Methylene blue-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (MB-APDT) was applied over the lesions in two sessions with an interval of 7 days. The dog successfully healed, achieving a complete clinical cure after 21 days, without reports of recurrence after a follow-up period of 6 months. Therefore, MB-APDT could be a potential ally of small animal clinicians to treat superficial fungal diseases and should be further explored in Veterinary Medicine.

A 10-year-old canine with chronic unilateral otitis and a history of unsuccessful systemic and topical antibiotic treatments was referred. A computer tomography scan (CT scan) revealed unilateral chronic otitis with calcification of the ear canal, abscessation and fistula. On bacterial culture a Staphylococcus pseudintermedius sensitive to pradofloxacin was isolated. Systemic treatment with pradofloxacin, 3 mg/kg per os once daily, improved the infection and the dog had total ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy performed. After one month, despite antibiotic treatment new fistulas developed in the same area. Bacterial culture revealed an drug-resistant S. pseudintermedius sensitive only to rifampicin. Under general anesthesia, the area was cleaned with 0.5% saline solution and 1 mL of indocyanine green (Emundo®, A.R.C.) was injected into the fistulas. A treatment with diode laser (A.R.C. Laser 810 nm, GmbH, Nurnberg, Germany) of four cycles 500 mw for 30 s, with a dosage of 50 J/cm2 in the effected area was performed. No antibiotic was administered and one week later, 50% of the fistulas were closed with a significant improvement of the patient\'s clinical condition. Cytology and bacterial culture were negative 72 h after the treatment. Total recovery occurred after two weeks. Photodynamic Therapy(PDT) is a promising antibacterial technique in case of localized refractory bacterial infections.

Oral lesions related to the novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been increasingly described; however, clinical and epidemiological information is still scant. Although a diversity of therapeutic strategies for the management of these lesions are present in the literature, one can note a lack of standardization and doubtful effectiveness. Thus, the present study aimed to report a series of cases in which a combination of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) was used for orofacial lesions in patients suffering from COVID-19. It was noted, in all cases, a marked improvement in tissue repair and pain relief within a few days; moreover, the patients recovered their orofacial functions satisfactorily. Based on the present series of cases and having in mind the conspicuous lack of information on the different aspects of COVID-19, the protocol which combined aPDT with PMBT seemed to be effective in the management of COVID-19-related orofacial lesions.

A 41-year-old male with a dental history of invasive cervical resorption (ICR) was initially treated with a surgical endodontics approach and secondly with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) along with endodontic retreatment. The use of aPDT was essential to promote bacterial reduction in the resorption defect. Combining these techniques allowed for clinical, radiographic, and tomographic success after five years of follow-up.
