Its diagnosis is based on the classic triad of symptoms its acronym stands for and the presence of ragged red fibres. There is currently no curative therapy for MELAS, and treatment focuses on managing complications that affect specific organs and functions. However, some immunonutrients can be used as a therapeutic alternative in patients with MELAS. We present a scientific literature review accompanied by the clinical case of a patient with dementia and seizures admitted to the intensive care unit.
