%X Undiagnosed chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure may be encountered during the evaluation of sleep-related breathing disorders at the sleep clinic. This article reviews the mechanism of chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure and the systematic approach to the assessment of specific sleep disorders associated with nocturnal hypoventilation encountered in clinical practice.
