Interestingly, Fasciani et al. recently identified an internal translation start site within the M2 receptor mRNA, directing the expression of a C-terminal receptor fragment. Elevated during cellular stress, this polypeptide localizes to mitochondria where it inhibits oxidative phosphorylation.
